Muji Christmas

Perfect stocking stuffers from Muji. That tree is so adorable. If there was a Muji store nearby (as in doesn't involve travelling in to London), I'm not sure I could keep myself from buying it. It's so cute! Right? Like, really, really cute.. :-)
North Pole In A Box :: There is a Polar Bear in this. Nuff said.

Wooden Tree Large :: Frickin' cute!

Press Up Brontosaurus :: Flippin' awesome.
Historic City View Handkerchief Paris :: Wouldn't blow my nose in it, but hang it on the wall. There are also London and NYC versions...

Christmas Is All Around

More Christmas music/video goodness. This one from one of my favourite films, 'Love, Actually'. Not many films can almost bring me to tears every-single-time I watch it, but this one can.

This video is a song that features in that film, an almost has-been rock singer is trying to revive his career with a kind-of strange Christmas song (which ends up being number 1 - a big deal every year in the UK..). It is sung by Bill Nighy in the role as Billy Mack.

Christmas is all around - unfortunately, I can't embed the video, so you'll have to scoot over to YouTube to see it. This video is possibly NSFW, it's got scantily clad ladies and semi pole-dancing. ;-)

Happy hyacinths

There's a new pattern available in the shop. Hyacinth Holidays. Aren't hyacinths lovely at this time of year? When we need something bright and colourful.

Here's a tip for ya. Instead of using threads of different shades of the same colour to achieve a look similar to the blue hyacinth below, use a variegated thread. But jump all over the place, so the different colours of the thread gets spread all over the area you are stitching.

Mary's Boy Child

So.. today is the fourth Sunday before Christmas and that kicks off the Christmas fun good and proper in my family. Some decorations go up, Christmas baking definitely gets under way and so on. And we light the first candle in the 'adventskrans' - a wreath with four candles, one for each of the four Sundays before Christmas.

And I thought we should have some Christmas music here on the blog too. To ease ourselves into the reindeer and jingle bells madness, we'll start with this classic from Boney M. You've probably heard it loads of times before, but have you seen the video? It is hilarious! Especially the guy in the group. For one, his strange hairstyle: an afro with a parting? Also, his incredibly tight trousers! But the funniest thing is his dancing. Oh it is impossible to describe in words. Although I encourage you to try in the comments! :-D

Happy Sunday!

Goodies for us

Look what I finally* received yesterday! Our advent calendar from my parents. Yay! Can't wait to see what is in the parcels - my mum puts a lot of effort into it every year and I Really Appreciate That! And now that it has become a tradition, I can't imagine December over here without this missive from home...

*Finally not due to any tardiness on my mum's behalf, but because of Royal Mail's uselessness. My mum sent the parcel on Nov 10 and when it still had not arrived earlier this week, we decided to look into it. Luckily my mum had bought 'track and trace' for it, so we could check its whereabouts online. Apparently Royal Mail had tried to deliver it - according to the online information, but noone had been here on the day in question (I know, because I am a job-less bum who sits at home in my jammies all day ;-) ). And even if they had been here, they hadn't left a 'sorry you were out' card.

Really not impressed with Royal Mail- oh well, I got my parcel now, so December is safe. :-)

Forever Noël pattern

Over the last week I've been doing a looooot of embroidery. That makes me really quite happy. I don't know if you embroider too, but I can really, truly recommend it! It is so relaxing and at the end of it you have something pretty. Or something rude if that's your flavour. ;-)

Anyway, here's the first of the Christmas flavoured patterns I've been working on. A little branch-y heart with 'noël' written inside. It is called 'Forever Noël'. I really, really like natural elements in Christmas decorations - maybe that's why I insist on having a real tree?

I remember going with my mum to the nearby forest when I was little, to collect branches, moss, pinecones etc for making candle decorations for Christmas. In my family candles are a big part of the December 'celebrations'. I guess with those cold, short December days you crave something warm and bright to make it feel a bit cozier.

Special delivery

Very special indeed. We won't be spending Christmas in Denmark this year, although we were supposed to - we alternate between here and there. So, to ensure some semblance of a Proper Christmas, I ordered a few key Danish ingredients. I was actually supposed to go to a shop/cafe in London which sells some Danish foods, but I couldn't be sure that they would have what I needed, especially now, getting so close to Christmas. And the delivery cost was about the same as a return ticket to London, so why not have it delivered? :-)

Especially, Kirsebær sauce. It is a cherry sauce which you have with risalamande, the traditional Danish Christmas dessert, it's a rice pudding sort of thing, but you eat it cold and it also has whipped cream and chopped almonds in it. It is VERY yummy! But of course you can't buy the cherry sauce overhere, I have tried improvising with some tinned cherries in a 'sauce', but it's just not the same. At all.

I also bought some 'kransekagemasse', which is a marzipan mix you use for baking a special kind of cake, kransekage. A lot of Danish families have it with champagne on New Year's Eve and since Tony really likes kransekage, I thought he should have some for New Year's. But without the champagne, because neither of us likes it. And to be perfectly honest, I don't think that champagne and kransekage go very well together, because kransekage is VERY sweet. But maybe that's just me...

And then I also got some sweeties. 'Tyrkisk peber' which is a hard liquorice candy with a hot, salty liquorice powder inside them. You just can't get proper salty liquorice overhere! Plus some Danish sweeties that Tony likes. Sweeties for my sweet. :-)

Bird bag

Weee, I can finally show you this bag I made for my sister for Christmas. It was intended as a bag for her school books, but apparently, she has way too many books! So it will have to hold her lunch instead!

The fabric, both inside and out, is from IKEA. Don't you just LOVE it? I know I do! My sister should too, it has birds on it and she loves birds. Like in an almost disturbingly fashion! ;-)

The inside. Of course I had to line up the fabric to get maximum birdage in there. Those birds really are terribly cute, don't you think!?

Two little pockets for little things.

The strap. With a slider. Which seemed difficult at first, but once you figure it out, it totally makes sense! Although, to help myself remember how to do it for next time (when I finally make a bag for ME), I've taken some step by step pictures and I'm going to write a tutorial for it very soon.

Xmas mix & match

As much as I like looking at presents that are all colour co-ordinated and stuff, I really think that a pile of presents that are all different, and a little mis-matched, is a lot more charming. Life isn't colour co-ordinated, after all, so why should Christmas be?

Our tree is not looking too healthy at all, so this afternoon I took off all the decorations. Tony is getting rid of the tree tomorrow. Christmas is over already! And I'm back to work tomorrow at 9 o'clock. Big sigh.

Glædelig Jul!

This is the intro to a julekalender (advent calendar - 24 episodes in December, some are for all ages, some are mostly for adults, some suck and some are classics) that was shown on Danish telly when I was a little kid. Jul i Gammelby, 'Christmas in Old Town' is a true classic and that tune just says Christmas to me. Probably to most Danes my age!

Well, it's Christmas Eve! And to Danes that IS Christmas, none of that presents in the morning nonsense for us. Nope, tonight is the night. Shame it's just the two of us, it makes singing carols and dancing arouind the tree a bit silly. Not to mention a bit difficult seeing as our tree is wedged in between the sideboard and the telly. But we are opening some of our presents tonight!

Speaking of which, Tony is chanting 'julegaver, julegaver, julegaver' ( = Christmas presents) right now. He's as excited as a little kid! ;-) But he can't have any 'til we've had dinner!

I would like to wish you a very merry Christmas. I hope you have a lovely and peaceful time with your loved ones.

And now I can make some rugbrød!

Yesterday in London we went to Scandinavian Kitchen, a restaurant which, yes, you probably guessed it, serves Scandinavian food. We didn't eat there, though, we went so I could buy some Danish food stuff. Like this big box of flødeboller. I don't even know how to describe what they are. They have a thin waffle like bottom, the white is a puffy, creamy sweet thing made from beaten eggs and covered with thin dark chocolate.

They are yummy! Unfortunately, a few hours being banged about on the Tube and in the streets, made some of them break. But they are still yummy! And the worst of them I put in the freezer because broken, frozen flødeboller are also very, very nice! They are not a Christmas speciality, by the way. I just fancied some, seeing as they had them. Ha!

We went to Liberty and then down to Carnaby Street where the All Saints shop had loads of old Singer sewing machines in the window. How cool is that? Not terribly photogenic, but you get the idea, right?

And how about this cool Christmas tree in Levi's, or whereveer it was...? I think I'm going to make a 'tree' like that next year. Ok, maybe not. ;-)

And these giant snowmen were floating graciously above the street. What with there rarely being any snow for Christmas, sometimes it's difficult to get into the right mood. But somehow these guys made me think, hell yeah, it IS almost Christmas, wahey!!

It's beginning to look a lot like...

Just a few Christmassy corners. Those gingerbread houses are from Woolies. I daresay they will become collectors items! The 'gold' tealight holder was a gift from my (paternal) grandma... ages ago!

One of the tree light holders that we've started collecting. I love the small porcelain 'dish' on it. So delicate.

And here's the other one, with a wee birdy!

Our tree is a bit funny looking this year. And a lot wider than previous years. Also, this year we managed to get a star on the top. Hooray!

What a cosy shot, eh?

Card and robins

As promised, here's the card I was making yesterday. The blue paper is from the inside of an envelope. I really like the white dots on blue. So pretty! It says 'Happy Christmas' by the way. In case you hadn't guessed already. ;-)

I spent about an hour the other day cutting last year's Christmas cards into tags for this year's Christmas presents. Nice bit of recycling I think.

In the Battle of the Animals on Christmas Cards, the robins clearly won. Very cute they are too! The deers and polar bears came in second. I really, really like the little one in Santa's hand, just there on the left hand side. So adorable.

Runaway penguin tee

Of course, I forgot to take pictures of this before it flew out of my hands. Typical. Good job my mum is handy with a camera then! I made this t-shirt for my sister for Christmas. She liked it. Yay! What you probably can't tell is that the single penguin on the front is saying 'hej' which means 'hi'.

What did you get for Christmas?

Only fantastic things, I hope! Like he didn't get me enough jewellery already, Tony also gave me these über-cute earrings from Sudlow on Etsy.

My parents gave me some yarn, loads of sewing thread (yay!) and fabric in solid colours. Maybe that is a bit boring, but sometimes you just need a 'boring' fabric to really make other fabrics 'pop', right? My fabric drawer certainly looks very pretty now, with all those solids. Or maybe it's just because I had to tidy it to fit in the new fabrics!? ;-)

One present from my sister (+ BIL) revealed that she actually reads this blog (hej lille søster!), because they got me those awesome coasters that look like chocolate! And I hadn't mentioned them to anyone outside of this blog. Plus some really cute fabric and (I think) every size of bias tape maker. Which I have still to try - a project for next week, I think.

This awesome book I got from Tony's sister + family. It is brimming with fantastic drawings and sketches, I really can't wait to spend an afternoon poring over them all. More shots from it on Flickr.

The picture above shows a couple of other books I got. The Needle Crafter's Companion and Freeform Knitting and Crochet. I have a massive crochet project this year, and I'm hoping this book will give me a bit of inspiration for that. More about that later, though. ;-)

This Last year's loot also counts some DVDs (Frida, Basquiat, Was It Something I Said) a 6 months subscription to my favourite magazine (BoligLiv.dk), a pink craft/tool case and a self healing mat. In short, I'm a very spoiled and lucky gal! I hope you got prezzies as good as these too!

Right, 'nuff already with the showing off, it's time to hit the sofa and do some crochet - Tony's blanket won't make itself, now will it?! ;-)

Oh man, you guys! Thank you so much for your sweet comments on the previous post! Who knew so many sweet people read this little blog!? Really, truly, from the bottom of my heart: thank you! Tony says thanks too. :-)

The pictures are from Christmas, chez my parents and in Århus (love those lights!).

Have a happy New Year everyone!

From me to you

It's almost here and we're almost there. I do so love Christmas and this year is very special indeed. We will be spending it with my parents and my sister and her hubby. It's four years since I last spent Christmas with my sister and us four 'kids' have never celebrated Christmas together!

All the presents are made, wrapped and packed. Perhaps not surprisingly, we have one suitcase almost exclusively filled with Christmas presents. Now that's what I'm talking 'bout! I totally love all the secrets and surprises of Christmas. It's not so much the actual present, but whether you/I've managed to get the presents just right for the recipient. I especially love when it's something unexpected that they absolutely love. That's the best presents to give!

Thank you so much for stopping by here on whatever regular or irregular basis that you do so. And especially thank you to all the lovely ladies who've participated in the interviews. I'll be doing more next year - so please let me know if there's someone you think I should contact!

Alright, I hope everyone who reads this has a very happy, lovely and relaxing Christmas. I also hope you get some nice surprises under the tree and some lovely treats on the table.

Red hat + green stripes

I spent my day off making this gal. Another nissepige (pixie girl). She's actually been a work in progress for a wee while, but now she's almost finished. She still needs some hair. Right now I think her head looks too small, but hopefully the hair will help balance that. Strangely enough (or maybe not so strange?) I'm considering giving her Leia type buns. We shall see...

I really, really love her legs. That stripy green fabric is just one of my favourites. Her arms can move, you can't see them in any of the pictures, but I've attached them with some buttons. First time I've done that, and I think next time I'd be better off using slightly thicker thread than just regular sewing thread. I keep thinking it's going to snap.

Anyway, she's cute as cute can be. At least I think so. She's the biggest softie/doll I've made so far and it's quite fun to make something on a larger scale. I've used some new stuffing for her as well, which feels heavier than what I've used before, so there's a nice weight to her. I wish I had time so I could make a couple more, one for my mum and one for my sister!

And speaking of my sister! Just about now she and her hubby should be landing in Denmark. They've not been there for over a year! I so, so can't wait 'till Monday when we go over there too. I really sometimes have to stop myself from thinking about it or I'll go mad with anticipation. Oh, I can't wait to see them all. I do miss my family an awful lot!

Christmas Q&A

Susie posted a Christmas Q&A and I thought I'd jump on the wagon as well. Feel free to do the same...

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?
Wrapping paper. Where's the fun in the bags? You need ribbon that's a pain to get off and paper you can rip!

2. Real tree or artificial? Real. I'd rather not have a tree than have an artificial one. To me they represent everything that's fake about Christmas.

3. When do you put up the tree? The fourth Saturday before Christmas.

4. When do you take the tree down?
At the beginning of January.

(The perils of cutting and pasting.. #5 was missing!)

6. Favourite gift received as a child? At the time it was probably a Barbie doll. But right now the only thing I can think of is a doll my mum made (and she made one for my sister too). Although that wasn't a Christmas present, we got them as an Advent present. There's an important lesson in that, I think...

7. Do you have a Nativity scene? No.

8. Hardest person to buy for? Can I say myself? I'm very picky. I throw a hissy fit if I don't get exactly what I want! (K-I-D-D--I-N-G!)

9. Easiest person to buy for? My mum and my sister. Or myself. Just gimme some yarna nd I'm happy.

10. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Oh, I'm too nice to say that... but I can say that it was red...

11. Mail or email Christmas cards? Snail mail, please! But I'm always late with my cards, so I don't mind the email kind, either!

12. Favourite Christmas movie? I haven't got one. Although I do like watching the Snowman. And for New Year's I have to watch this strange German show about an old lady and her butler. It's her birthday and he serves food and drink for her and her guests. Only the guests are imaginary, so the butler has to drink for them. It's hilarious!

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Ohh... at the end of September, but I have bought presents earlier than that if I saw just the right thing for someone.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? I don't think I have, actually. I can't remember to be honest.

15. Favourite things to eat at Christmas?
Home made marzipan sweets. My mum's caramelised potatoes. Ris a la mande, a Danish Christmas dessert.

16. Clear lights or coloured on the tree? I'm old skool, so I prefer proper candles, but I accept that that isn't always possible.

17. Favourite Christmas song or album? Yes! It's called A Very Special Christmas. I particularly like the Run DMC track and the Bruce Springsteen one.

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Travel, so I can go to Denmark, of course! ;-)

19. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer? No. Santa lives in Greenland so his sleigh is driven by dogs.

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Neither. In my family it has always been a nisse. The fact that Tony and I haven't got one at the moment, doesn't stop me from thinking that's the only thing you can have on the top of the tree. ;-)

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? On Christmas Eve of course. This Christmas morning lark is only for weirdos. ;-b

22. Most annoying thing about this time of year? People who think it's all about the presents.

23. What is the “silliest” family tradition you do, or miss doing? Hmmm.. dunno...

24. Ugliest Christmas decoration ever invented? Anything over the top outside, basically anything that's not strings of lights is an abomination. Not to mention wasting electricity...

25. Which looks best, theme trees or homey trees? Homey ones! I can't stand theme ones, they have no personality. They are almost as bad as fake trees!

26. Gingerbread or sugar cookies?
I don't know what either of them are, so I'll stick with my home made Danish Christmas cookies... ;-)

Googley + rippley

I had an idea, and this is it: parcels with googley eyes. It cant' get much better than that. :-)

I've started another ripple blanket. One that will be big enough for the whole bed. A bit of an undertaking, which will keep me occupied for a loooong time! I haven't got enough yarn for it at the moment (not by a long shot!), but that's ok. I want it to be a random blanket made from different blues (+ white) that I happen to have to hand at any given moment. The colours will be as undulating as the waves of the ocean. ;-)

Mushrooms and penguins

A little while ago I had the idea to make a mushroom stamp and the other day I thought it might be fun to use it on some kraft paper for wrapping paper. So I made some today. Pretty cute if I do say so myself. :-)

The tag is cut from one of the Christmas cards we got last year. A nice bit of recycling, I think. Of course you have to remember to save the cards and remember where you put them. And I like the randomness of these tags. You've just got to make it work with the paper and ribbon you've got.

I don't get a lot of actual crafting done lately - I blame the lack of daylight! But I did manage to make this little pouch. I'm taking it on the flight for all those little things... Like my passport and purse. I hate having to leave them in my carry-on bag during the flight. But this pouch is so small that I can hide it next to me in the seat. We usually get the wing seats (because those have more leg-room and Tony's got long legs, ya know) and you're not allowed to keep your handbag with you.

Æbleskiver

These are æbleskiver (literally 'apple slices') which is a Danish Christmas staple. They are a bit like pancakes, but balls cooked in a special pan. They are oh-so very lovely and yummy. We had them on Saturday, but I forgot to take a picture of them. So of course I was forced (I mean, the sacrifices I have to make for you lot!) to have some today so I could take a picture. There are no actual apple slices in them, unless you make them the old-fashioned way. There is a tiny bit of cardamom in them, but they are pretty flavour-less. Which is why you dip them in sugar, icing sugar or jam. And to be honest, it's best with all three at the same time! ;-)

If you would like to try making æbleskiver yourself, here's a website which will sell you all you need. Well, really you only need the special pan; I'm happy to share my recipe with anyone who wants it. You just have to promise me two things: you will only make æbleskiver during December and you will not eat it for breakfast (I really don't understand why you would do that anyway.) ;-)

I'm feeling really proud of myself lately. I've been really good and unsubscribed from quite a few blogs and I'm also in the process of deleting some of the posts I've kept new. Because, honestly, when am I ever going to read all of it? Never, that's when. So many have already succumbed and more still will follow. It actually feels pretty good. All this digital pack-rattery can't be good for ya. ;-)

Beady heart ornaments

Hey, here are some super easy ornaments I made a couple of weeks ago (I only just got round to adding the ribbons today, ha!).

All you need is beads in whatever size, colour or shape you fancy, wire that is thin enough to go through your beads and some ribbon.

Put beads on your wire, "tie" the ends together, but leave a bit of wire so you can make a loop. Shape your beady wire into the shape you want. Attach ribbon; I made a bow at the bottom of the loop and then attached another bit of ribbon at the top for hanging on the tree.

Told you it was easy. ;-) There are some more beady hearts in this Flickr set.

A question about beans

This is our advent calendar - from my parents! Aren't they sweet to send us a box of goodies like that? We don't have a fancy display to put the little parcels on, but I kinda prefer it this way. I like having to rummage through the box to find the next one. :-)

And I don't think it matters how old you are - and advent calendar is always pretty cool and very exciting. Don't you?! Daily anticipation + a surprise = a good thing.

Tell me something: is 1.8 kilo of jelly beans slightly excessive? It's only £13 incl. postage...

Happy December!

The advent candles - to be lit on each of the four Sundays before Christmas. But we cheated today because Tony's family came for an afternoon of Christmas-ness.

I love the smell of oranges and cloves = Christmas!

Danish and English combination on the tree = Snowman baubles (which Tony bought last year) and garlands of Danish flags.

The tree and marzipan ready for making sweets. Nephew could barely wait to get started making the sweets. Everyone else was having lunch and he kept saying "can we make the sweeties now?" "I can make it myself". He he, funny stuff.

Marzipan sweets. Everyone had a go at making some. Yay! And when they left, Tony's parents said "see you same time next year*", which means that now we have a bona fide tradition! Yipee!!

*we will see each other before then, obviously. ;-)

Have a heart

I can barely believe that November is on its last leg, can you? But I'm happy it is! Be cause that means it's almost December and almost Christmas and almost time for Denmark. And to be honest I think about that several times a day: "just x weeks and x days till Christmas". I can't wait for it to be "just x days till Christmas".

That up there is a little linen heart I made today. I think I'll make a few more and hang them on the tree. It has a little bell so if you touch the tree you will have jingle bells. And that's a good thing.

And here's a wip in red and white. I'm not completely sure it's turning out the way I intended. But that's ok. It will still serve its purpose. I'm just worried it'll end up looking too much like a circus tent...

Recycled paper lanterns - a tutorial

Yay! It looks like the FTP upload has been fixed. Nice one, Blogger.

Anyway, here's a fun little thing you can make for Christmas - and at other times if you want, of course. I used to make loads of similar ones when I was little. Paper lanterns, made from recycled privacy envelopes.

What you will need: old envelopes (you know the kind you get bills and bank statements in, they usually have some kind of lovely print inside) or other paper, scissors (fancy ones if you have them, I used pinking sheers) and a glue stick.

First 'clean' your envelope, you don't want the window bit, so you end up with a rectangle. Fold it 2-3 times on the long side. Make sure that each section is the same width so you don't cut into the wrong bit by accident.

Now cut along the folds. You can for example make triangular cuts, which will turn into diamond shapes or just make straight cuts close together (they will open up when you glue the lantern together).

Now you should have something kinda like this. If you made triangular cuts, that is. Make sure that all the folds are straight so they will stay bendy.

If you want you can cut along the top and bottom edges. Glue the short edges together and that is your lantern! Squash it down a bit so the folds 'stick out' a bit. Do it better than what I've done in the picture here. ;-)

Now get some tea-lights - please use a glass votive or something similar, you really shouldn't put the lantern over the light as it is (even if I've done that in the picture below!), fire and paper don't go together, m'kay?

Depending on the colour of your paper, it might be nice to use a votive in coloured glass, to add an extra bit of colour. Right, that's it. I hope you enjoyed this wee tutorial. :-)

Nissepige - again

Some better pictures of the nissepige.

Below she is shown with the reverse side of the apron. That one is my choice. I couldn't make up my mind, so I asked Tony to pick another fabric - the side you see above. I think his was the better choice. But, hush, don't tell him I said so. ;-)

Nissepige

Here's a wee 'nisse' girl I've finished this afternoon. The photo is not great, it's not easy taking nice pictures after sunset -and, believe me, this is the best of the bunch! I'll take some new ones tomorrow afternoon.

I love nisser (plural), it's something completely missing from Christmas in England. Although they are not a Christian thing; they "were around" long before Christianity and Christmas appeared in Denmark.

They are not only associated with Christmas, or at least they didn't use to be. They lived on the farms and in the old days were a force to be reckoned with, so it was important for humans to stay on their good side so they would help in the running of the farm. Like keeping the animals safe from evil and such.

These days they are mostly a feature of Christmas, mainly, I suspect, because of the red hat, which is similar to Santa Claus'. And the two hats may indeed be related but I can't remember the exact symbolic meaning. And I'm completely getting away from the point -if actually there was one!

One of the best books I've ever read about a nisse is called Hyggen, by Danish author Lars-Henrik Olsen. It's a great book, it introduces a lot of the old Danish folk tales and such. I don't think it's been translated to a lot of langauges; perhaps the other Scandinavian ones and German. If you do get a chance to read it, I highly recommend it. Even if it is a childrens' book. ;-)

*** ***

We've had a bit of an annoying thing happen. This morning Tony left for work as usual but a couple of minutes later I heard the key in the door and he was back - looking rather shocked. But anyway, the first thing that went through my head was "your bike is gone?!" And it was! His brand new bike has been stolen from the bicycle storage room. But because he had it locked down with a really good lock they've had to actually pull the bicycle holder out of the brick wall!!

Pardon my French, but some people are just complete and utter wankers! He only got that bike less than two months ago. To say that he is annoyed is putting it mildly. So he spent the morning talking to the police and the insurance company. Fun times. Not. :-(

Free confetti included

In two months exactly, we're going to Denmark. And just in time too, because Christmas in Denmark is on the 24th, in the evening. That's much nicer than this morning thing they do over here! ;-)

Tony bought this pack of kitchen roll the other day. It's a bit early for the Christmas kind, I think. But, ignoring that fact, the illustrations on the packaging are really terribly cute. Don't you agree?!

I wonder who is the designer behind? Oddly enough, the package also included a small pack of confetti. I'm not really a fan of confetti, but I'm sure I can find another use for it. Card decorating, perhaps.

I'm working on a couple of Christmas-y tutorials for some decorations which are rather pretty, plus they put all those 'privacy' envelopes to good use.

Too early?

I put these votives (and two other kinds) on the shelf the other day. And today I noticed that we had some Maltesers Christmas tubs and advent calendars in the store. Bloody hell, the madness has started already!

Happy Noooooooooo Year!

Felt owl brooches

I have lots of things I want to make -although I haven't got any plans as such yet...- painting, drawing, sewing, embroidery... and who knows, maybe this is the year I finally learn to crochet!

And I'm definitely going to make more brooches, like these owls I made as a Christmas present for my sister. She loves birds and owls and stuff, and her favourite colours are red and brown - I hope she'll be using them!

Happy New Year to everyone reading this; I hope you have the things you want, meet the people you want to meet and learn new things!

I hope she likes them. You can take a look at them in this Flickr set (and I hope you like them too ;-) ).

Father Christmas for the Nephew

Christmas card for Nephew
Originally uploaded by wardi.
Last weekend we were out shopping and we got to talking about the fact that I needed to get the Christmas card done for the Nephew. At the time I said that I couldn't just come up with things in an instant.

But a short while later I did have an idea and this is it! it looked like this in my head and on the wee thumbnail sketch I did.

I'm so happy! I love, love, love when the thing I make comes out exactly like the idea I had in my head. It is a strange thing. It is like being in a different state of mind. Mind and hands working together... It is a happy place to be.

And Nephew liked the card. Which makes me even happier!

My Danish heart(s)

Woven felt hearts
Originally uploaded by wardi.
I made some of these hearts a while ago, but the other day I made some more, so here's a bunch of them. Normally you make these from paper, but I decided it'd be fun to make them with something else this year. They are stuffed and then sewn together. For the paper kind, you don't close them, cause you use them on your Christmas tree and put little cookies or sweets in them.

Most people in Denmark will be familiar with how to make these hearts (although they are usually made from paper, not felt). Most schools have a day at the beginning of December where the kids make ornaments and decorate the school for the holidays. There's no normal school that day and you eat Christmas cookies and sweets. Most kids love that day.

I love these hearts. They are so simple to make (once you know how...), and allegedly they were invented by Hans Christian Andersen. I've never seen them anywhere but in Denmark, and they are a great tradition for me. I remember how we had some when we were kids, that my dad had made, when he was little, and every year we put those on the Christmas tree. I think my parents might even still have those somewhere.

As much as I love all those pretty ornaments, with glitter and such, that you can buy, the homemade ones are the most special ones. There's a story or memory connected with each one. Like those ones my dad made. Like the ones I made last year; they will always remind me of the first Christmas after I moved to England (although we spent Christmas itself in Denmark).

And I look forward to seeing how our "collection" of memories will expand. Like our traditions are still being formed, smelting the Danish and English ones together, most of the ornaments on our tree are still quite new, but there are already some with memories we both share.

I made some of the woven paper hearts last year, and they are of course on the tree this year. Here are a few of them. Some are more advanced than others. Some people can make them with little pictures woven in them, but I haven't quite got my head around those yet...

Woven paper hearts

I made a tutorial for (the simple version of) the hearts last year, it can be found here, along with some other Christmas recipes.

I'm entering the woven hearts in this month's Whiplash, in the DECORATION category. :-)

Apart from the woven hearts, this year I've made some embroidered ornaments as well. The perfect project to work on in my lunch break! ;-)

Embroidered tree ornament

Oh and speaking of pretty, glittery ornaments, how awesome is this polar bear??! I could have just bought every last one of them in the shop. Imagine a whole tree just with polar bears!!

Brunkager and Santa

Brunkager and Santa
Originally uploaded by wardi.
We've started opening the advent calendar from my parents. Yesterday we got this cute santa guy - he's now hanging on our Christmas tree.

The cookies in the picture is the last lot of Christmas cookies. I made them Thursday evening after work. Nearly killed my feat that did, what with standing up for almost 9 hours at work before that!

But it's worth it. Cause the spices in the cookies make the flat smell like Christmas! And it's so satisfying to be munching on cookies that I made myself!

Right, hopefully I'll be back with some more crafty or drawing-related stuff soon. Cookies is not the only thing on my mind, you know....

Not so much crafty, but tasty!

Danish Christmas cookies
Originally uploaded by wardi.
Dang. With this new job I don't feel like I have a lot of energy to just sit down and do some crafty creating. Cause (I think) I work a lot; this week I'm at work 43 hours, which includes breaks, but I'm not at home, so it is work, right?

But I do try to do some crafting in my lunch hour. And I'm pretty sure they ain't seen people knitting or embroidering in the canteen before!

But I don't care what people think about it (if they think anything about it at all), I feel like I have to do that little bit during the long busy days to not lose myself completely to "the man".

In the same spirit I try to always wear something I made, a bracelet or something, to show (to myself if no one else notices or cares) that I'm me, I just happen to work in that particular place.

Anyway, I have been making stuff when I haven't been at work: I've made two lots (pebernødder and vanillekranse) of Christmas cookies so far and hopefully I'll get a third lot (brunkager) done in the next couple of days.

It's kinda silly to spend all this time making cookies, when I could be doing other stuff, but I just want to make them, because they are Danish Christmas cookies, and I don't want to forget my roots, even if it does mean being in the kitchen when I'd really rather be sitting on the sofa watching telly!

But it is worth, I think. Making things by hand, the way my mum and my grandmothers do and did, and not always taking the easy route of buying things that aren't even half as good.

Right. Well done for making it to the end of this post. I'm not sure what it was supposed to be about, or what it turned out to be. But that's the way things are sometimes.

Oh and the cookies are tasty. Atleast T thinks so. But he is the Cookie Monster so he would, eh? ;-)

On their way

Presents!
Originally uploaded by wardi.
These presents are making their way to California in a big box right now. I hope they get there in one piece and in time before Christmas!

Looking at this picture it's funny how I seem to pick colours that just "go" together for the wrapping paper and tags and ribbon. And they are bought at different shops, at different times (we got the silver paper last year) and even in different countries.

I like the aqua ribbon with the red and white paper. And the little penguin tags - so cute!

I know, this is a post that's not really related to craft in any way. Heck, I didn't even make the darn tags this year! But you know, I think it's important to appreciate the pretty things in life, even when they are made by machines and sold by big chain stores.

Especially when you haven't got time for anything else...

Sad little heart

Wonky heart
Originally uploaded by wardi.
It's my day off, yay! Time to do some relaxing and crafting. Not much crafting, though, but plenty of relaxing.

I've had the idea for this heart Christmas decoration in my head for a while, and today I thought I'd finally try making it. It turned out less fantastic than the image I had in my head.

It's all wonky-like. The rounds are aren't as round as they are supposed to be, the fabric puckers (how DO you prevent that??) and it's just... not right.

I think I need some sewing lessons... It bugs me that I can't sew things nice and neat. When you're making alien-like softies, it doesn't matter so much, I guess, but in the case of this little heart, you need neat.

Anticipation

Advent calendar!
Originally uploaded by wardi.
Look what my mum sent us! 24 little presents in a Christmassy fabric bag. It came in a big box and was a complete surprise! Kudos to my mum for being able to keep it a secret. ;-)

There are 24 because it is an advent calendar for T and I. Now I just have to be patient and be a good girl and wait for December before I can open any.

My mum used to make advent calendars for my sister and I when we were little, so this totally reminds me of the sweet anticipation of the Decembers of my childhood when each morning we'd leap out of bed and open our little presents.

Tak søde mor.
