Sneaky peeky

Sneak peek at the next embroidery pattern. A bit of a challenge because I limited the colours I could use. Not an easy thing for me, you know, because I like using most of them at any given time! ;-)

And.. I have been painting. Just a little bit. But I have lots of ideas for more paintings so I am sure there will be more coming soon. I've been using mainly acrylics lately and that does make it quicker to finish a painting. I guess it also helps that they are fairly small paintings. :-)

Felt and stitches

Ripple with patience

Oh deary me, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to burn your retina! ;-)

The huge-o ripple blanket is coming along in its own slowly rippling way. I have decided to make each 'repeat' not so repetitive. Leaving colours out here and there, adding others as I feel like it. It's the same general colours in each, but different and stuff..

Some stitched stuff

Work in progress. Which has been delayed way longer than I intended. Hopefully it will be finished this week. Or early next week at the latest.

And completely unrelated, I feel so very, very clever because I may have (atleast somewhat) solved our unbearably-hot flat problem. Last week I bought a couple of thermal blankets and this afternoon I hung them between the curtains and the window in the living room. Not 100% sure that it is due to my genious, yet simple, solution, but the living room and kitchen definitely feel cooler tonight. We haven't even got the big fan on, which we normally do! :-)

Wip colour

Say what? Nah, I don't do cross stitch. Not me. Nope. Nuh uh. But I am trying to use up bits of embroidery thread... ;-)

Another wip. I started this several months ago, but then never really got anywhere because I had to take a crochet break because of my thumb being weird. Anyway, I did a couple of rows yesterday and this morning I tried it on the bed. Too big. Like... waaay too big, hanging off the sides of the bed with about a foot to spare on each side.

What the heck do I do now? I am considering frogging it and starting over a bit smaller. But considering that each row takes around 45 minutes..yeah, that's not gonna happen! So I am thinking that maybe I'll just fold the surplus at the side, sew it to the 'back' of the blanket and then keep going like it's a smaller blanket. What do you reckon? What would you do? Any crochet 'rescue' ideas out there?

Herb preview

A little preview of one of the embroidery patterns I am working on. I was hoping to have it finished today, but I've woken up with a cold and a sore throat, so not sure if I can concentrate on it!

These embroidery patterns are a series of herbs and I am wondering if I should include lettering for the name of each one? I didn't think of it originally, so I haven't done any lettering with my own embroidered versions. What do you think? With lettering? You could always leave that out if you didn't feel the need for words with your herbs...

Colours wip

So, this is how the Monday mini quilt is looking so far. Although can it technically be called a quilt when there's no middle layer? Anyway, I am still debating with myself how to quilt it. I am thinking of using white straight stitches or maybe red stitches. I dunno, there's just so many possibilities because of all the colours! What would you do?

The back is a light yellow and how cool does it all look up against the light?! It looks like stained glass. Imagine it as a curtain. Well, maybe not..

Apart from a few bits it is made entirely from scraps, I've even used a couple of selvedge. I think it is quite nice to use up scraps, even very little ones. Some of the pieces I've used are not 3cm wide. It is a fun puzzle to see if you can use it all but still have it be pleasing to look at.

Prototypin' in the creative space

Happy colours in my creative space today! Ohh, but what can it be? The prototype is finished (there may be a post about it later today if I can get my act together!) and I am pretty darn happy with it.

And here's another thing I've been working on today - this morning when I got up at 5:30 with Tony! It is a wee sneak peek at a new embroidery pattern! :-)

Check out the other creative spaces through here. Also, check it out: my creative space was last week's favourite! :-)

Mini Quilt Monday + quilt WIP

There's a group over on Flickr called Mini Quilt Monday, which, you can probably guess, is for mini quilts made (or atleast posted/uploaded) on a Monday. I had a bash at making one today but unfortunately I didn't have time to finish it. I will, though, because I rather like it! It is made entirely from scraps from other projects. Amazing what you can get out of scraps, eh? No idea what I'll be using this mini quilt for, but that really doesn't matter that much. I get to play with colour and use up some of all those scraps I've got in a carrier bag.

Some of the scraps came from cutting fabric for this quilt. It is for Tony's cousin's new baby daughter. And it's another excuse to play with colour.

The beginning

Pile o' fabrics. Some for a new project, some not. The notebook was a gift from my mum. Isn't it cute? I love the combination of orange and purple. I am a child of the 70s after all. ;-)

Slowly does it

I started this more than 2 weeks ago. I really didn't mean for it to take this long to finish! But I guess it means I ended up doing it exactly how it says: slowly. Don't know what I'm going to use it for, I just felt like making it. And that is actually justification enough.

Here's another wip. Can you have too many wips? Can't remember where I got the idea for this from, but I'm pretty sure I've got a rough sketch of something similar somewhere. It's all good.

Yesterday I had an idea for a pretty ambitious project which I'll hopefully start working on while we're in Rome. It will require lots and lots of embroidery floss. :-)

Also, I have found out how Blogger's post scheduling works, so I'm thinking I'll prepare a few posts for when we're away. It would be a bit boring if there were no posts here for the better part of 3 weeks, right? What do you think? And what kind of posts would you like to see..?

Quiet stitches

I'm still working on this. It's going to take some time to finish, what with hand sewing all of it! It's a nice project to work on when watching telly. Not much thought needs to go into it. Except for picking the next fabric. Although I try to keep it as random, but non-repetitive, as possible.

What is the best stitch to use for this kind of job? I've been using regular (but very tiny) straight stitches, but I'm thinking back stitch might be better?

I'm not really supposed to buy any new fabric at the moment, but these two just called out to me in the fabric shop I just happened to walk into when I was in Denmark. They had the green one in several different colours. I was really torn between this one and the red. And the yellow. And the purple... Erm, I could happily have gone home with all of them! The stripy pink one is for a very special project I've got in mind. Unfortunately, I won't have time to work on it this side of Christmas what with work and all.

And then I also got this remnant of oilcloth - I'm not completely sure if it is actually Marimekko's Unikko flowers. But it's pretty just the same! And I should be able to make at least one bag type thing from it. Pretty good for 20 kroner (roughly £2).

Doing something

Just a little something I'm working on. I can't decide if the 'g' looks okay or weird... The 'g' is entirely my own creation and I'm starting to think that making your own type is difficult and, and harder still when you are working with cross stitch. ;-)

Uno frigodetto, por favor

I made this the other evening. Hand drawn flowers and leaves on blue fabric. I got a Pentel Fabric Gel roller for £1 in WH Smith the other week and recently I had this idea to simply draw on fabric. The gel roller is awesome and I want to get some more. It is rather time consuming to draw on fabric; imagine doing it on a whole yard or more! Which is of course exactly what I intend to do once I have some spare time and a specific project in mind!

This is one of the tests I've been doing for the wedding shawl. I do not have a link at the ready for it, but it is actually a doily type thing that you put on a chair, but by using different yarn and hook it will be a lot bigger than in the original pattern. The cotton yarn I'm using here is just for testing purposes. Although, I'm not sure if I'm going to use this pattern. I might make my own, using what I have learnt from this one (and other ones). One thing I have learnt is that what I called leaf shapes are actually called pineapples. How summery, eh?

And speaking of summery. The colours so far in this embroidery wip remind me of being on holiday in Spain as a kid and eating frigodettos (ice lollies shaped like a finger, how strange) in the sun.

Have a heart

I can barely believe that November is on its last leg, can you? But I'm happy it is! Be cause that means it's almost December and almost Christmas and almost time for Denmark. And to be honest I think about that several times a day: "just x weeks and x days till Christmas". I can't wait for it to be "just x days till Christmas".

That up there is a little linen heart I made today. I think I'll make a few more and hang them on the tree. It has a little bell so if you touch the tree you will have jingle bells. And that's a good thing.

And here's a wip in red and white. I'm not completely sure it's turning out the way I intended. But that's ok. It will still serve its purpose. I'm just worried it'll end up looking too much like a circus tent...

Random pretty

Random pile of fabrics.

I've not had time to prepare this week's interview, so I'll have to postpone it for a couple of days. Boo! Sorry, guys.

Tonight we're going to Tony's sister's house for fireworks night. I'm looking forward to that. It feels like I've done nothing but work lately, so it's going to be nice to interact with non-work people. ;-) Plus Tony has made orange double chocolate brownies, which I'm sure are going to be a hit.

I've been hand-stitching this wee quilt in my lunch breaks over the last couple of weeks. Very relaxing. And I'm totally making the pattern up as I go along. You can't really see how pretty the pink stitches are on the green fabric, but I'm really loving that combination. Yeah, that's a shocker, me liking pink and green!

Have a lovely weekend!

Shawl and scallops

My Sweet Pea shawl is coming along quite nicely, once you get the rhythm down it works up pretty quickly. And it is very quickly gobbling up the four skeins I had originally bought. The funny thing about it is that the widest third of the shawl will use about half of the yarn needed for it. I know, because I counted the shells and did the figures. I'm not particularly good with math, but I do like to count things... And don't even get me started on Fibonacci; I can feel my heart skipping already!

When we were in Denmark in August (so too long ago!) I saw a beautiful scallop-edged quilt in a shop and I'd been wondering how to make something like that. The simple solution is to be found in Bend-the-Rules Sewing, by Amy Karol (like you didn't know). So this afternoon I thought I'd have a go - using the stripy top I made a little while ago. It's not completely done yet, there's still the quilting bit to go. And I might even do that by hand! The scallops are far from even size - this is what happens when you do things freehand. But that just adds charm. ;-)

Will you think of a title for me, please?

A couple of apron-y little ladies I'm working on. Should be finished tomorrow. They are veeery cute, even if I do say so myself.

We went to IKEA yesterday to get some fabric (check) and some pretty Christmas wrapping paper I had seen, but unfortunately, they didn't have any. So we shall have to go back. I don't mind too much! ;-)

I like the IKEA bargain corner; I got a huuuge piece of blue fabric for a quid and a tea towel and a pillow cover for 50p each. Not bad, I say!

Bird kick

I've been on a bit of a stamp carving kick lately. All birds - and a leaf. For a wee project I'm working on so I can't really get into the details at the moment... ;-)

Now I've got enough birds for the project and I'm experimenting with the colours. I can't make my mind up if I'm going to use different colours for each bird or just one colour. And I'm not sure that I'm completely happy with the colours I have, so I may have to wait to finish it until I get another colour. I think red would be nice with the orange and pink. The background will be yellow so I can't use that.

And here's a tip for ya: if you want to carve your own stamps from erasers (or anything else, I guess), using a lino carver is WAY better than a knife. Oi... I've had my mum's lino carver set (from the 70's!) in a drawer for ages, but didn't start using it 'till the other day - how silly is that?!

Right-o, off I go to work now. I just have to work today and tomorrow and then I'm off for 8 whole days. Yay!

Brownies and elephants

Tony made brownies the other day. Like his muffins, they are yummy. I mean like, REALLY yummy! We may have wildly different tastes when it comes to food, but in the baking department they are similar and he does baking very well!

And here are a couple of things I'm working on for PlushYou... aren't those elephants just the cutest?! The deadline is mid-September, but to make sure that they get there in time, I've set my own deadline: must be finished before we go to Denmark. Which is in 19 days. Do you think I'm excited?! ;-)

Hello world, I'm still here!

Just not getting a lot of stuff done; although I'm not quite sure why... But a few things are in various states of almost completion:

I gave up making the blanket with triangles. It was just bugging me too much that it wouldn't be the shape I wanted! So, for the last week or so, I've been working on a single large granny square. And I'm rather liking it! I really, really (REALLY!) love the colours - such a shame it's not for me! But I guess I can always make one for me.

Also, a good thing about just making one big square is that there will be no sewing the triangles together; which is a bloody good thing!

Another work in progress: a Clone Trooper tee for my friend Steven, which he will be wearing this weekend while participating in the Empire Magazine quiz at Celebration Europe. I've made a couple of tees for him before, but this is the first one I get to hand to him in person! I've known him for 5 years, but we've never met!

I'm also making a Star Wars themed tee for myself for Friday when we go to CE. Oh, I can't wait - so much Star Wars in one place!!

One happy bunny

And speaking of bunnies... coming soon!

My (Danish) friend Sara lives in Windsor, where she works at a certain castle, and on Saturday we're going to visit her! I'm so so happy about that! We don't see each other near enough, which totally blows. She's very dear to me, and I really appreciate the friendship we have. Supportive and honest, inspiring and smart, that's my friend!

Can't wait to see her! And we're going to see the castle as well, which neither T or I have ever seen. Maybe we will take tea with the Queen..?

The pictures above are of a couple of things I'm working on at the moment. Actually, the pile in the second picture are all finished, I just haven't had the time (and light) to take a proper picture of them...

The top picture is something completely new, and I just feel like looking at it all the time, although it's not even close to being finished, 'cause it's just so darn pretty! And it's inspired by birdhouses. I have no idea why I keep gravitating towars birdhouses at the moment. Maybe it's a spring thing?
