It wasn't the happiest day in my life. Every day is the happiest day in my life, because I wake up knowing that I get to share it with my best friend, the love of my life. This is how we met. And I still mean every single word...Labels: wedding

Love in pictures
Look at that! It's our wedding album (and our honeymoon album)! It's only been what... 10 months and a bit since we got married. :-) I guess you could say I've done a thorough job at procrastinating on this! But it was a daunting task: some 2,000 pictures from the wedding alone (collected from different people) to weed through and then adjust them for print. And we had over 1,000 pictures from our honeymoon to go through a similar process. I'm getting exhausted just thinking about it!
But then Blurb announced that now you can make your book document and upload it to them as a PDF (which is what I wanted - total control, unlike using their templates) and I realised that I could download a trial version of InDesign, valid for 30 days. That was the kick in the backside I needed, so for a good chunk of July that's what I was busying myself with.
The front cover of the wedding album is my bouquet and our rings on a rock during our 'official photo shoot'. The back cover is one I took in the hotel room the morning after the wedding, again the bouquet, this time with the gifts we gave each other. On the honeymoon cover is a composite image of pictures of the baths of Caracalla. One of our favourite places in Rome. Tony suggested that picture, and I daresay it was a very good suggestion.
It took maaaaany hours of sorting and adjusting and moving things around and stuff. But I am glad I put in the hours. It is our wedding album, after all! And I am really, really pleased with the result. Blurb recommend using images in CMYK but I have no program available that can convert from RGB, so I was a bit unsure how it would turn out. It was fine, can't really tell any difference between what I saw on my monitor and the printed images.
But if you want to print pictures in a book through Blurb, or similar, I recommend taking the time to lighten your images. Not a lot, just enough that they look a little bit too light on your monitor. Because colour will inevitably print darker than it looks on a monitor where it is rendered with light. But there is no light in ink. ;-)
So yes, Blurb more than lived up to my expectations. Both the actual result but also the fairly quick turnaround time - I got the books in less than 2 weeks, I thought I'd have to wait a lot longer than that. Plus the price is reasonable too, as is the shipping, unlike certain other similar services.Labels: wedding

Flowers on glass
This was made on my hen afternoon. My friends abducted me, with the co-operation of my parents (!) and after a picnic overlooking a field we went to the studio of this glass artist where we spent a couple of hours making this large bowl/plate. It was a lot of fun, but not in the ha-ha kind of way. More in the 'wow this is cool, better get the most out of it' way so I was pretty quiet and very concentrated about getting the most out of it.
The others let me sketch out a design and then we just went to town with powdered glass and 'ink'. The funny thing is, the colours of the powder were a lot different than the finished result so I had no idea how it had turned out until my friends gave it to use on our wedding day. I reckon it's a real beauty! We did a good job that afternoon. And it's an afternoon I won't forget.
Then later we had a BBQ at one friend's house - my parents had entertained Tony and they brought him round for the BBQ too. Nice food, nice conversation, even a bit of crochet.
* * *
I apologise to those who have emailed me recently (thank you!), I will reply very soon, but this week I am intent on getting our wedding and honeymoon albums done (finally!), so I may be a bit slow to reply. I think a focused effort is what is needed to get those albums done, even if it does mean putting other things aside. Even making more embroidery patterns!
Right, back I go to fine-tuning photos... :-)Labels: just stuff, wedding

Flowers for Mormor
I don't know if this is of interest to anyone else but me, but this is where my bouquet from the wedding ended up; on my (maternal) grandma's grave. She died when I was only 11 years old, so I was too young to really know her. I am their first grandchild so, according to my mum, I was a bit special to my grandma. She was special to me too and I so, so wish I could have got to know her better. So many things in life are meant to be shared with your grandmother. Not least your wedding...
I never had any doubt what to do with my bouquet after the wedding.

And the roses smelled really nice!
I'm really rather close to being sick of looking at pictures of us! Hopefully, hopefully, I'll be done soon. Although, this is just phase one: selecting photos. Next I need to adjust them. As you do. And then make an album.
Anyway. This is sort of our 'official' photo. It's the one which has been framed for my granddads and it's going on our thank you cards as well. I like it because it is not your usual full frontal, wide grin kind of picture. It's like a stolen moment with just the two of us kind of picture. :-)Labels: wedding

In progress
I'm still going through all the pictures (2K+) from the wedding; eventually there will be a Flickr album available to view. I'm probably going to make it 'by invitation only', so I'll email a link to any interested parties. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I don't really like having my picture floating around on the cybernets unless I put it there.Labels: wedding

Morgengaver
I thought maybe you'd like to see a picture of our presents to each other..? Accompanied by my beautiful bouquet! I meant to post this before we went off to Rome, but then time kinda got away from me. Funny that, huh?
Daisy earrings for me - they are so beautiful, from Georg Jensen. A necklace for Tony, with the Århus masque. It's a Viking thing. Tony likes Viking things, so what could be more appropriate than a Viking thing from my home town?Labels: wedding

Almost wifey
Hey! As you can probably guess, we're in Denmark, and what a hectic week it has been! What with hairdresser's appointment, cake making, grandparent visiting and Tony's family arriving yesterday and today...
But everything is pretty much ready for tomorrow and hopefully, we can get a good night's sleep. Fingers crossed, anyway!
I really can not believe that we're actually getting married tomorrow. It still seems kinda surreal! Maybe it'll feel really real once hair and makeup is done and I've got my dress on.
Right now I'm off to have a shower - one less thing to do in the morning, eh! More later... once we're hitched!Labels: wedding

Got any ideas?
Hey, have you got any great ideas, tips or must-see places for Rome? Yes, we do know where we're going! But it's been a fair few years since I was there last and my Tony has never been. So some nice inspiration would be great. I'm looking for something a bit unusual... not necessarily something to be found in a guide book. Maybe even something crafty!?
Random things I'm loving right now: that you can customise the colours of the labels in Gmail. That Firefox is just soooo clever! For example, I just typed in 'ferrovie' (Italian for railways) and it took me straight to the site I wanted. Try doing that in IE! ;-)Labels: just stuff, wedding

Gettin' high
I'm sorry that I'm being somewhat boring at the moment. It is partially because we're gearing up for Christmas (no, really) at work so I'm working more. Oh the joys of retail, eh? And there's the small matter of our upcoming wedding which is also keeping me busy with this and that.
And speaking of wedding related things. As pretty as the red shoes are, that particular red just doesn't go with the blue of the dress. So the hunt was on for another pair. Luckily, we found THE shoes in one of the first shops we tried. Thank the Force! I really don't like shopping...
But I do really like these shoes! They have a vintage sorta vibe to them. I'm a wee bit worried about the heels, though. I never wear heels, so these seem really high for me! But I've been wearing them around the flat to get used to them and so far they seem okay.
I was going to make a bag for the wedding, but I've decided not to. I'd want to make it to my own design and getting close as we are, I'd just get really frantic about it being just so. To the rescue came this pretty number from Accessorize, ain't it lovely? It's big enough for my camera (what? you didn't figure I'd be takin' some pictures myself?) and other bits and bobs, but not too big. AND it's not too fancy, so I can use it afterwards. Which is good. I don't like the single-use, for one day only kinds of purchases that do happen for a wedding - especially when it comes to shoes and clothes...Labels: wedding

Minor dress alteration
It's just an itty-bitty thing... like changing the colour, which means starting over! And it's ALL my mum's fault! She wasn't completely happy with the drape of the red fabric and wanted to change it. And then I told her that I really wanted to change the colour. When I originally had to decide on a colour, I couldn't make up my mind between red and blue, and Tony said "oh... just pick red". So I did. And I would have been happy with that too. But deep down I did want the blue after all. But then we had already bought the red fabric and I didn't want to freak out my mum! But then I got the chance to change it and I totally ran with it! And it all worked out beautifully in the end.
This trip to Denmark was originally just going to be final adjustments, but all of a sudden my mum had to make almost a complete dress in a day and a half. Fortunately, the red dress was fitted so "all" she had to do was take that apart and use it as a pattern. But she did it. The dress is virtually finished. How cool is that?
The only sad thing about not having the red dress is that the fabric had a nice rustle sound to it. But I guess I can live without that. ;-)Labels: wedding

Animal bags
Oh look, look! Crafting has taken place! These are the bags for the Nephew and Niece for the wedding (6 weeks left!!!) I dare say, they are rather cute. Owing mostly to the fabric of course. I just love that fabric! So cute, but not sickly cute.
We are still struggling with what to put in the bag for Niece. How can we amuse a 1 3/4 year old girl? Any suggestions? Something that will fir in this bag! ;-)
And something else. I haven't made a pincushion in ages, so yesterday I made one. And, er, I've cut some fabric for a few more. Not sure what exactly I'm going to do with 5+ pincushions. Oh well. I can always use them as juggling balls! That would be a nice trick for the wedding, eh?

Shawling along
Sooo, I started on my wedding shawl proper. My mum sent over a couple of skeins of the yarn, I bought in Denmark, so I could get started. I decided to stick to the pattern, after all. The shawl might not be as tall as I had imagined I wanted it to be. But with fringes I'm sure it'll be alright.
The yarn is the softest wool+mohair mix (from Italy) you could imagine. I love working with it. And although it is 50% wool it is not the least bit scratchy. Or too warm. It's just perfect. I can't wait till my parents come over (with the rest of the yarn) so I can finish it. It works up pretty quickly too, which is a major bonus when you're anxious to see the finished result!!
I bough this fabric recently. Isn't it just the cutest ever? It's 2D Zoo from Alexander Henry in case you're wondering.
Tony's nephew and niece are of course coming to the wedding too, so I am going to make a goodie bag for each of them to help keep them entertained. The blue and green fabric I'll be using for Nephew, but I just can't decide which one to use for Niece. Which is why I got both of those. I would have got the one which has a pink background, but that I couldn't find anywhere for a reasonable price. So. What do you think? Niece will be 1 year and 9 month by the time of the wedding...
We're also struggling a bit with what to put in Niece's bag. We've got some jumbo crayons, but she'll probably still be too young to really have fun with those. Any ideas? I have thought about making some 'softies' from the animals on the fabric, so she'd have a giraffe, an elephant, a zebra and so on. But other than that, I'm a bit stumped.
Nephew we've got pretty much covered: some Cars stickers and colouring sheets (and perhaps some other bits and bobs). And we might put a disposable camera in there with instructions for him to take pictures of people's feet!

Know Swedish? I need your help!
I'm going to crochet a shawl for the wedding, and I have found the perfect pattern (it has a leaf like motif!) But it is in Swedish! Oh dear! I can read and understand Swedish pretty well, but I'm incapable of deciphering the pattern instructions. Could you have a look and tell me what the abbreviations mean?
Yikes! I just had a closer look on Ravelry (where I found the pattern) and it's a knitting pattern! A bloody knitting pattern! What the frell am I going to do now? Oh dear, oh dear. Ermm. Does any of you know of a similar pattern for crochet? Or, are you a genius who can turn it into a crochet pattern? Man, I really need to start reading things and not just looking at the pretty pictures.
My mum made waffles yesterday. They are thin and light, very unlike Belgian waffles. And yummier. Mmm, yum!
And, er, sorry I lied, here's another peek at the dress. It's VERY red. Wasn't supposed to be quite this red, but they didn't have any more of the bolt we had originally seen, so the colour is a little bit different. Never mind.

A (errr) dead flower for you
I think dead flowers can be almost as pretty as the live ones. Sometimes I will deliberately leave dying flowers in a vase to see the way they decay. Sometimes the colours become even more spectacular then when they were fresh.
Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for your advice about my shoe/tights problem.I forgot to mention that they are slingbacks, so the heel backs won't work in this case. Unfortunately. The tights from M&S (thanks for the link, Katie!) might be an idea. But now I'm kinda infatuated with the stripy tights idea. Just to be a bit different, you know? I don't really plan on showing off my legs at any point. Well, not a lot, anyway... So it would just be for me to giggle at the thought of my silly stripy tights. Ya know?
Although my mum probably won't like that idea. So best not tell her how strange I am, yes?Labels: wedding

Stripy Bambi
Hello internets, I need your help. These are my shoes for the wedding. Which I love, love, love. But there is one tiny problem. They fit me when I wear normal socks or just bare feet. But as soon as I put on nylons, I feel like Bambi on ice. My feet are sliding around in my pretty, pretty shoes. I thought I had found a fun and, err, different solution: these stripy tights. But they are still slippery, slidy in my shoes. So what the heck do I do? Any magic ideas/products out there?
Oh, err, I think I'm gonna go with red and black in stead of this very pink. ;-)Labels: wedding

Hot and humid
This is the Green House at the Botanical Gardens in Århus. We will very likely be doing our wedding photos there.
Because it offers both an indoors and outdoors option. We're of course keeping our fingers crossed for nice weather, but you never know.
So although the Gardens are lovely and our first choice (especially that pretty white bridge!), it's nice to know that there is a waterproof alternative.
And I suspect that, even if it turns out to be lovely weather, we might still go inside the Green House and take a few pictures.
It is very beautiful and interesting in there. I love foliage. But you knew that.
And what about this interesting chap? Also, there are butterflies flying freely in one of the sections.
However, there is one little downside to the Green House; parts of it is tropical or subtropical and that means hot and humid. How comfortable is that going to be in dresses and suits, eh?

PS: How friggin' sweet is my Tony? Last night after he had read my sentimental bread post from the other day, he went on a search for a recipe for birkes (Danish breakfast roll) and said "if we succeed in making these, we can make them for breakfast every Saturday. He totally rocks!

Lies + glass
My friends have lied to me. And they made my mum lie to me! But it's all good. You see, in Denmark the hen night (polterabend in Danish - although that's originally a German word...) is supposed to be a surprise and the bride will be 'kidnapped' by her friends.
And this is exactly what happened on Saturday. My mum told me that we were going to the hotel to sort out the menu for the wedding, but when we got there, there were my friends shouting "SURPISE!" At first I didn't even realise that it was anything to do with me. I was REALLY surprised! And I looked at Tony and said "did you know about this??!!" He didn't. He was just as surprised.
Well, off we went to a little village close to where my parents live and first we sat outside and had cake and fruit in the sunshine.
Then we went to the studio of a glass artist and we were going to make a large glass bowl! First she explained about different techniques and I was really itching to have a go! They let me pick the colours for the bowl and make a design (I'm glad about this, because I have seen other similar bowls and they are not always terribly pleasing to the eye. But I digress.)
Up there is my friend Solveig, she's writing her name on the middle tile of the bowl. Of course, I do have better pictures of my friends from that day, but I wouldn't feel comfortable about any of them randomly posting pictures of me on the interwebs, so I won't do that to them. Maybe I should have taken pictures of their shoes...
Here is the glass artist putting the pieces together on top of a large sheet of glass, which forms the base of the bowl. The whole thing melts together into one solid piece of glass when it goes in the kiln. It was quite interesting making this. You work with glass powders in different colours and you can make many different effects in it. There's also a tube with paint that you can use like a pen and write or draw on the glass. I think that's the bit I liked the best.
This is a view of the courtyard outside the studio. It was very nice.
And a really bad photo showing some things in the studio.
Here's the finished bowl (before firing in the kiln). It will be placed over a form and will then take the shape of that. The colours look quite pale, but that will all change once it's been fired. It's kinda like glazes for ceramics, they're not always the real colour before firing. I really love it already, and I can't wait to see the finished bowl!
I'm really happy that my friends picked this 'activity' for my polterabend. I do not take kindly to the kind of public humiliation that can sometimes be a part of a polterabend in Denmark, and I don't really drink, so a night on the town would have been a total waste!
Of course, that's not to say that I didn't have any alcohol - there was a couple of glasses of wine. In the sunshine, on the patio of my friends' new house. And I mean new, there's not even a lawn yet!
A lovely, lovely house. Look, even the shadows in the evening are lovely. I could do with a house in Denmark. But you knew that, didn't you? ;-)
Here's my friend's hubby doing the bbq version of a mushroom cloud. I hope he doesn't mind me posting this picture, but I figure, you can barely see him behind all that smoke!
And then there was dessert. Ice cream in the flavours of Danish sweets and chocolate milk. Friggin' amazing! I especially liked the liquorice one. Yummy!
I had a GREAT time. It was such a surprise and I really, really appreciate it. It is sometimes very difficult to be away from the people I know in Denmark. I know, there's email and stuff, but it just isn't the same I tells ya. And now that picture of the ice cream is making me long for some chocolate milk....

We're back
Back from the sun: back to the rain. We had a great weekend. But very busy, busy, busy. Good busy! Most things wedding related are now sorted and we can relax a bit what that is concerned. Menu is pretty much set, we've fitted my test dress so my mum can get on with the proper one. We've picked some locations for photos (because of the time of year, we can't be sure to have sunshine, so we needed a back-up plan! More about this once I do the picture thing) and other things. This afternoon we also booked our honeymoon!
Can't show you any pictures; Blogger's image upload is being its usual grumpy self. Bah!
And now... too tired to do anything. So I'm going to relax in front of the telly with my new crochet project which is a nice cream colour. ;-)Labels: wedding

Test heart + Indy
This is a test we made the other day for our wedding favours. Making the hearts works well, but once we take them out of the fridge they start to melt. This is a problem! We're going to end up with boxes filled with chocolate goo. How do we avoid this? Do we need to use a special kind of chocolate, I wonder? For this test we just used regular Galaxy chocolate (it is Tony's favourite).
Any ideas, suggestions?
Tonight we're going to see the new Indiana Jones film. Looking forward to it! Which reminds me, I better go make some popcorn so I don't have to pay through the nose for them at the cinema!Labels: wedding

Getting real?
So. I may be changing my mind about having real flowers in my bouquet. I blame it all on you, Chelsea Flower Show. Damn you for being so irresistibly pretty! These are some flowers I like, (starting top left, moving clockwise) celosia, craspedia (oh love!) dahlia and peony. And then combined with some green chrysanthemums. All of this against my red dress. People will definitely see me coming, eh?

Right-o. Time for work. Hey-ho.
