From a Happy Squirrel

Loooook! Look what was in my post box yesterday: happy mail! From Nicky of Happy Squirrel. We've had a wee swap planned for a little while and now it is finally time to make good on it. I have sent mine, too, of course. ;-)

Let's see what lovely, lovely goodies Nicky sent me. Rip that paper!

Oh no, wait, open the envelope first and read the card. Oh what a card! How beautiful is that? I love it. And love the colours so much. Nicky obviously has VERY good taste!

Ok, now RIP that paper!

Isn't it beautiful?! On the left, a bunch of 6" squares of very pretty fabric, most of them Japanese, I think. And that blue one with the apples and pears... I've been wanting some of that for ages, and then here I have my very own piece of (h)apple-y colour. She must be able to read my mind!

Then, top right, some pretty, pretty trims. And finally, all that pinkness with the zipper, they must be used together (with addition of some of my own stash) to make a project of some kind. There is a similar project-compilation from me to Nicky.

Oh, thank you so much, Nicky - I LOVE everything!

Tidy buttons

I spent way too much time sorting my buttons this morning. But now they ARE sorted and that is very nice! Seeing I don't really use a lot of buttons - you don't need a lot of them on a crochet blanket, eh? - I've decided to only keep the ones that I really love or can actually see myself needing/using.

The rest h a v e t o g o. Eek. Getting rid of a craft stash?! Was there ever such a thing?! I guess so. If you would like this pile of buttons (325 grams!! = 11.5 ounces/0.7 pound) offer me a swap or gimme £2 for the postage (UK 2nd class).

Most of them are neutrals: black, white, brown, navy. But there are other ones in there as well. Fabric covered, metal, might be some mother-of-pearl. Probably vintage ones as well as a lot of these have come from my mum and grandma + Tony's mum.

Later edit: so, a few of you have expressed an interest in the buttons - what do I do now?! Split it between ya? What would you do?

Swap Hip

Fancy swapping this copy of new UK sewing magazine Sew Hip? It is really rather fab, er, hip. It is kinda like reading a selection of blog posts. Or, maybe it just feels that way because it features articles with craft blog favourites, Amy Butler and Alicia Paulson. And surely, that is not a bad thing! There's also a fair few inspiring patterns to and projects to try out.

I would like to swap this for a non UK magazine, as I can get those already, if I so desire. Same goes for Danish magazines, I have excellent connections to Denmark. ;-)

I wouldn't mind getting my sticky paws on a copy of Where Women Create or Artful Blogging or something similar. Or something inspiring about drawing... Email me if you're interested. :-)

Edit, 18 dec. Thanks for the responses, the magazine has a new home and is on its way there very shortly. Sorry that I couldn't swap with all of you!!

Like I need another obsession

Hooray! I got some pretty mail today! From Julia, who suggested an ATC swap after I left a comment on this picture. And that's the one she sent me! Thank you, Julia, I love it! :-)

Of course, when she suggested it I'd never made an ATC before. So I can quite firmly blame her for my newly found obsession with making these tiny pieces.

Here's another one I finished last night, and yet another is in the works. I can't help myself!

Swatch swap

Picture borrowed from Jesse's blog. (Hope she doesn't mind! (-; )

Jesse (of the very inspiring jezzeblog) has started a Swatch Swap and I signed up for it. This is how it works:
Here's my idea: I'm going to make a quilt, of simple squares, and I'd like it to be as colourful and varied as possible. So how about a swap? I'll send you a 20cm/7.8 inches square of one of my prints, and you send me one of yours. Medium-weight fabric, not too thick and not too thin, with a hand printed design. Small enough to stick in an ordinary envelope.
Doesn't that sound fun? Would you like to swap a swatch with me too? Email me or leave a comment where you make sure to fill in the email field (no one but me will see it!). Or maybe you'd like to swap a swatch with Jesse! To do that, just leave a comment on that post I linked to above.

Hand printed means... well, anything you can think of, really. Potato print, citrus fruit, gocco, stencil, screen print, finger painting, letting your cat walk in some paint and then walk on some fabric, drawing on fabric. Anything.

Finally!!!

Jenn has a very mean postman/woman - she didn't get her part of the swap we did recently until today. And it's probably two weeks since I sent it to her. Even to Australia that seems like rather a long time. But at least she got it; I actually had to resend it as she didn't get it the first time. How wude!

Above is the (second) mp3 player cosy I made for her and below is the first one. I hope she wouldn't rather have had the first one! ;-)

that you have to keep things secret until the recipient has received it!

Softie with attitude?

Recycled softie swap
Originally uploaded by wardi.
Today I finally got the recycled softie from the swap-bot swap I participated in. And it was definitely worth waiting for!

Some of my favourite colours and it's just so cute! And look at the piercings! How cool is that??!

Thanks, Christel!

What am I thinking, giving these away?!

Embroidered bracelets
Originally uploaded by wardi.
Hey-ho. Looky, looky at these bracelets I've been working on for a Swap-bot swap. They are of course inspired by this lovely, lovely book. And I feel slightly mad for actually giving them away, just like that. But I guess I can always make other ones. Goodkarma and all that... ;-)

I sometimes make stuff that I am so happy with that I can barely believe that I actually made it. Like these bracelets. I have a warm fuzzy feeling inside when I look at them.

I also have a real difficult time saying "I made this and it totally rrrrrocks!". Anyone else have that problem? I sometimes almost feel like pretending I didn't make it. Is it some kind of embarrassment over getting praise or maybe a feeling that, by making things and (hopefully!) making them well, you're kind of showing off?

I don't know. And that's actually not what this post was going to be about, but now I've confused myself... Huh...

Ah yes. I really like how the top bracelet has turned out. And I wasn't sure that I would because I've used some colours for it that I rarely use,let alone in combination. Brown and a sort of mustard-y yellow.

I don't know why, but I rarely ever use yellow. It's weird, cause it's a nice, happy colour, but I just don't go for it. I guess it's good to get out of your my comfort zone from time to time.

And speaking of warming to certain colours/colourways. The photo below shows the backs of the bracelets and the fabric on the yellow-brown's back comes from a thrifted pillow case which I picked up for no particular reason, cause the colours aren't ones I normally zone in on: white, grey, yellow and a sort of rusty colour.

But I'm glad I did, it was perfect for this bracelet! And I've had it lying on the table for a couple of days now and the more I look at it, the better I like it. Isn't that funny?!

Are there colours you rarely use? Why? Have you started using them more anyway? How? Why? ;-)

Redwork - another swap!

I've gone and signed up for another swap. And I'm really excited about it! Cause it's an embroidery swap, redwork to be precise.

What is redwork, you ask? Well, it's basically embroidery done with a single colour (that's right: red!) and traditionally backstitch, stem stitch and outline stitch were used. Read more about redwork here if you like.

Sign up for this swap closes on Monday so get yourself over and sign up. Just click on the badge below.

Sublime Stitching

I got this book for Christmas (I asked for it) and was really excited: an embroidery book by Jenny Hart who makes cool stuff like this and this!

I guess I should have explored the Sublime Stitching website before asking for the book, cause I was expecting something else than what the book actually was. The website claims that "there are no geese in bonnets". And it's true, there isn't a goose or a bonnet in sight. But there sure is enough of cute (the bad cute, in my very humble opinion) things in the book: Kittens! Sundaes! Dogs! Drinks!

I SO wasn't expecting that after looking at the Jenny Hart website. I was expecting a book that would inspire me, you know, lots of pictures of interesting things to embroider. Not a book virtually lacking in photos, with most of the pages being transfers and the rest being an embroidery primer.

Hopefully, Jenny Hart does another book sometime, one that is more like her own work and less like this book. But perhaps I'm not the "target" for this book. I know how to embroider and I don't need transfers or anybody else's ideas for what to make...

Anyway, I'm swapping the book for the Happy Hooker - maybe I'll finally learn to crochet! ;-)

Pincushion swap

Pincushion swap
Originally uploaded by wardi.
I received the pincushion(s!) from the swap I mentioned a little while ago. Yay! I couldn't be happier with this swap from Sherry.

The pincushions are so cute. I totally love them! And they are so different from anything I'd ever make and that is so cool; it's so inspiring!

Other than the actual pincushions she also sent me some chocolate (I'm being good and sharing them with T! He he.) and some very pretty pins. And just look at the pretty bags the pincushions were wrapped in, those leaves are so sweet.

There are some more pictures of the package in this set.

Pincushion but no challenge

Ghost'n'pumpkin pincushion
Originally uploaded by wardi.
The current pincushion challenge was a swap, but guess who forgot to sign up for the swap in time?! Me. Silly, silly me! Note to self: remember to check deadlines!

Luckily, I found a pincushion swap on Swap-bot, so I didn't have to miss out on my pincushion fix!

And this is the pincushion, I made for the swap. The pumpkins are embroidered and the ghost is glow-in-the-dark fabric paint. For some reason, whenever I make something with this paint, I'm always really excited about the fact that it glows in the dark! I always have to check that it actually does glow.

I have no idea why I made it with a Halloween theme, but I just had to embroider some pumpkins for some reason. I sent it today, though, so it won't get to its destonation for Halloween, so.. *shrug* I hope my swap partner likes it anyway!

Mail goodness

Swap goodies
Originally uploaded by wardi.
I swapped the Adorn magazine for some very lovely stuff:

- a selection of trims and ribbons
- buttons
- small swatches of different fabric
- a larger piece of blue fabric with monkeys in overalls - just about the cutest thing I've seen in a long while!

Strange thing is that the fabric on the left is just like some I bought in Denmark, only in a different colour!

Now I just need to think of something to do with all this lovelyness. What a horrible task! ;-)

Swap, anyone?

As mentioned, my sister brought me some magazines from the US. One of them was this, the first issue of Adorn. Which is really cool, but "unfortunately" I already got it!

So if anyone would like to swap it for another magazine - or maybe some pretty ribbon or other crafty things... let me know!

Wow!

Magswap June 2006
Originally uploaded by wardi.
I am one lucky gal! Look what my fantastic swap partner sent me: seven fabulous magazines! And that's not all, no she sent me a bunch of other great goodies too.

Each magazine was individually wrapped in some very pretty paper - I took my time unwrapping them so I could savour the paper and the moment. Each was a very lovely surprise, and each and every one was just right, just perfect.

I signed up for the swap about a month ago and my partner and I have emailed each other a few times and somehow she has managed to look inside my head; how else could she know what I love?!

I can't wait to read all these great magazines, get inspired by them... But I'm going to take my time - make them last.

Crystal, thank you so very much. I love everything. I am one happy bunny right now! Thank you, thank you!!
