My wonky willage

I told you I've had little houses on my mind lately. I finally got round to making some today. And these are really small, the length of my hand (I have very small hands). You can probably guess that there are only six houses in this wonky willage; you're just seeing both sides of the houses. And yes, they are meant to be wonky. I still need to sew them together at the bottom, but apart from that they are done and I just wanted to let them loose on the world. Heh. If you want to see better pictures of them, they are over on Flickr: top row + bottom row.

I just realised that tomorrow it's two years since I started this blog (after a false start on wordpress), but I've been blogging for longer than that. I think I started my first blog in... 2003. Blimey. I kept my other blog alongside this one for a few months, but then the crafting sorta took over and here we are two years later. :-)

The Happyscape is a finalist!!

I can barely believe it, but my Happyscape softie is a finalist in the Softie Awards!!! When I saw it this morning (actually, my first clue was a comment left by Susie on Flickr - thank you, Susie!!) I was like "oh my god, oh my god!". And then Tony was like "what, what, what??!" He he.

I'm SOOOO happy. I spent so, so many hours embroidering this thing, and being a finalist is really like a prize in itself. Thank you for making the Happyscape a finalist! And if you want to make both of us even happier, go here to vote for the Happyscape!

To celebrate this, I'm actually going to do another give-away. Not sure what will be in it yet, but something happy for sure! Leave a comment on this post before midnight today, Monday April 28. If you already left a comment for the birthday give-away you are automatically entered in this one as well. But you can't win twice, we want to spread the love, right? ;-)

You don't have to vote for me* to play, you don't have to vote at all - but why not go show people that you appreciate all their hard work? And PLEASE remember to fill in the email field if you leave a comment. It is invisible to anyone but me and I won't pass it on to anyone. :-)

*except if you are related to me in some way, then you HAVE TO vote for me!! ;-)

Huggable Happyscape

I may have gone a bit crazy over the top with this soft version of a Happyscape.

Lots and lots of felt flowers. Yes, that's why I did all that banging the other day.

And then there was the stitching. Many hours of stitching. But that is all good. Ahhh yeah.

Mostly buttonhole wheels and daisy stitches. But also French knots. I love French knots. And once I got over making them absolutely perfect each time, they are A LOT easier to do.

A rainbow, of course. And leaves.

Very wide open chains making waves. Oh yes, I really did just say that.

And how cute is the fabric on the back? It's from my mum. All my cute fabric is from my mum. She knows better than me that I actually like the cute stuff.

Another proof of my loving the cute stuff is the picture I have of Tony cuddling the Softscape, but I'm not allowed to post that. So I'll have to keep that one to myself. ;-)

Blogger seems to be having some problems right now, so fingers crossed that I can actually post this. Here we go.

Not for boys?

So I've started making some little doggies for my mum. This one is for a baby boy, but my mum might not agree with me that deep orange ears and tail are suitable for a boy. What do you think?

Of course, I think that it's the perfect colour; because it's a happy and bright colour = perfect for kids. And all this 'oh no, you can't have anything even remotely red/pink for a boy (or blue for a girl)' it really pisses me off. It's not like the kids are going to care, is it? Oh dear, I can tell that this is a topic best stayed away from this early in the day or I'll go to work grumpy... ;-)

It's starting to look like a bloody zoo!

Meet Godfrey the giraffe. Although I must admit that he looks more like some kind of dinosaur. But nevermind.

Valborg the whale (inspired by the song Hvalen Valborg, by Danish band Shu-Bi-Dua).

Heh, I just spoke to my mum and she wants me to make a dog, as a present for my cousin's new son. She's even sending me some fabric for it. Isn't she just the cutest mum ever? Right, I'm off to finish the crochet blanket.

Cassia

Oh look, it's a wee dog! I used some of the fabric my sister and brother-in-law gave me for Christmas. Pink and brown together are so pretty!

Top/side view. Don't look too closely at it, the poor thing suffers from my lazy sewing. ;-)

And a bonus shot with my foot in stripy sock.

Also, but completely unrelated, I can highly recommend chocolate mousse with vanilla ice cream. Yum!

Red hat + green stripes

I spent my day off making this gal. Another nissepige (pixie girl). She's actually been a work in progress for a wee while, but now she's almost finished. She still needs some hair. Right now I think her head looks too small, but hopefully the hair will help balance that. Strangely enough (or maybe not so strange?) I'm considering giving her Leia type buns. We shall see...

I really, really love her legs. That stripy green fabric is just one of my favourites. Her arms can move, you can't see them in any of the pictures, but I've attached them with some buttons. First time I've done that, and I think next time I'd be better off using slightly thicker thread than just regular sewing thread. I keep thinking it's going to snap.

Anyway, she's cute as cute can be. At least I think so. She's the biggest softie/doll I've made so far and it's quite fun to make something on a larger scale. I've used some new stuffing for her as well, which feels heavier than what I've used before, so there's a nice weight to her. I wish I had time so I could make a couple more, one for my mum and one for my sister!

And speaking of my sister! Just about now she and her hubby should be landing in Denmark. They've not been there for over a year! I so, so can't wait 'till Monday when we go over there too. I really sometimes have to stop myself from thinking about it or I'll go mad with anticipation. Oh, I can't wait to see them all. I do miss my family an awful lot!

Nissepige - again

Some better pictures of the nissepige.

Below she is shown with the reverse side of the apron. That one is my choice. I couldn't make up my mind, so I asked Tony to pick another fabric - the side you see above. I think his was the better choice. But, hush, don't tell him I said so. ;-)

Nissepige

Here's a wee 'nisse' girl I've finished this afternoon. The photo is not great, it's not easy taking nice pictures after sunset -and, believe me, this is the best of the bunch! I'll take some new ones tomorrow afternoon.

I love nisser (plural), it's something completely missing from Christmas in England. Although they are not a Christian thing; they "were around" long before Christianity and Christmas appeared in Denmark.

They are not only associated with Christmas, or at least they didn't use to be. They lived on the farms and in the old days were a force to be reckoned with, so it was important for humans to stay on their good side so they would help in the running of the farm. Like keeping the animals safe from evil and such.

These days they are mostly a feature of Christmas, mainly, I suspect, because of the red hat, which is similar to Santa Claus'. And the two hats may indeed be related but I can't remember the exact symbolic meaning. And I'm completely getting away from the point -if actually there was one!

One of the best books I've ever read about a nisse is called Hyggen, by Danish author Lars-Henrik Olsen. It's a great book, it introduces a lot of the old Danish folk tales and such. I don't think it's been translated to a lot of langauges; perhaps the other Scandinavian ones and German. If you do get a chance to read it, I highly recommend it. Even if it is a childrens' book. ;-)

*** ***

We've had a bit of an annoying thing happen. This morning Tony left for work as usual but a couple of minutes later I heard the key in the door and he was back - looking rather shocked. But anyway, the first thing that went through my head was "your bike is gone?!" And it was! His brand new bike has been stolen from the bicycle storage room. But because he had it locked down with a really good lock they've had to actually pull the bicycle holder out of the brick wall!!

Pardon my French, but some people are just complete and utter wankers! He only got that bike less than two months ago. To say that he is annoyed is putting it mildly. So he spent the morning talking to the police and the insurance company. Fun times. Not. :-(

Roos and Elektra

Roos

These are the softies I mentioned yesterday. I got this idea to make a softie that has a simple shape, but one which I can add all sorts of details to. Like ears. Although I think they should have ears, they would look funny otherwise...

Elektra

I think I'm going to make more of these. The basic shape is just a rectangle, but it could also be a square. The face part is made from linen and the lower body is a solid cotton. And then there's the aprons. Ack, I love little aprons! :-)

There are more pictures of them in my Softies set on Flickr.

Can't think of a title

A bunch of little guys which I'll put in the shop soon. And take some better pictures of them, naturally.

In a few hours it's time to face the music. So to speak. To say that I'm nervous would be an understatement. But I'm also feeling defiant. I am a good, decent person.

Have a lovely Sunday and please keep your fingers crossed for me. :-)

PlushYou!

PlushYou! opens tomorrow! It is so weird, because it's such a long time coming... I think the apply-date was in April and I sent my three Quapos at the end of August... And I'm still pretty amazed that my softies actually got accepted (weeeee!) I just wish I could be there, but of course I can't. Hopefully, they'll post some photos - and email some of my ones in situ; of course I'll share those, if they do!

Oh, and I almost forgot; a little while a go, they posted some links to people who will be in the show this year and I was one of them (they call me super crafty!)!!! I sooooo get a kick out of seeing my name mentioned - anywhere! As long as it's good, of course. ;-)

Right, time to do some relaxing with my crochet hook and brightly coloured yarn.

Mini Quapos

I finished this today - it doesn't have a name yet. The recipient will have to name it. I'm pretty sure it's a girl though!

A few more Quapos in progress. One of them with a blue face, something a little different!

My parents are back from their holiday; they had a great time with my sister and her hubby. They saw a geyser, deer, raccoons and a bear! And loads more, that they've yet to tell me about.

Tony had the day off today (and so did I), which was really nice. We did mostly boring stuff, but we did them together so it was all good.

I hope you had a lovely Monday too.

PlushYou! softies

As promised, here are the three softies I'm sending off to PlushYou! Their 'species' is Quapo. Whatever that means. Well, it does mean something, but it's just kinda boring, so.. whatever.

It has actually been quite challenging to make these, despite having made some before. Because I have made them previously, I decided to use fabric that maybe I wouldn't normally pick as my first choice. The challenge then being to work with it so it turned into my kinda thing after all. And I think they have. But only after ripping out the decoration on a couple of them a few times. I wanted them to be just right. And they are. Last night when I had left them on the sofa they just looked so adorable, proper little characters!

I hope someone will love them just as much as I do and buy them. But even if no one buys them, they will still be loved (I think..!), because I've asked Sally, if they don't sell, if she could donate them to a children's' hospital or something like that.

This is Lilli Patches and she's made from some preloved fabric I bought when we were in Denmark in April. I almost didn't buy it, but I'm so glad I did, 'cause it's just perfect and sooooo cute with those bears in boats!

Next up is Amelie Florens. She is made from a tea towel! I love the muted colours of the stripes, so pretty.

Here is Tertia Fantine, made from a bandanna. I'm never going to use that sort of thing for a softie again! Because the fabric is so thin, it makes it really difficult to stuff evenly, so she does have a bit of a belly!

Please let me know what you think of them as I am a wee bit nervous about sending them off like this; maybe no one else will like 'em!

Isn't Vlad just the cutest?? I was looking for inspirational polar bear pictures when I stumbled upon this guy. It is from handmade by ND, which has some other extremely cute softies too. He made me smile, I hope he will you too.

My little house

My little house
Originally uploaded by wardi.
Yikes! I'm in love!

This is my, now finished, work in progress from yesterday. I can barely stand how cute it is. My heart skips a beat whenever I look at it. Oh, and if you think I'm in love with the front of the house, just look at the back! I love that pink blossom tree! Here are some more pictures of the house, with a few close-ups.

My little house

I've already started on another house. They are so fun to make, and just think of the variations I can make... oh how fun would it be to make a balcony!? I want a whole little village!

And for some strange reason I've been humming 'Your Song' by Elton John all day...

You know softies are hip...

When even the fashion designers start making them! Or, rather, designing them. I can't exactly imagine Christian Lacroix sitting in his sofa watching a film while stitching up a softie. Or maybe I just have a lack of imagination..?

It's cool that things like softies have become so popular, and maybe the fact that designers like these are designing them, will open people's eyes to the awesomeness of softies and the like.

However, I must say, I don't think these are particularly interesting examples of softie making, there are lots of lesser known crafters/designers out there who make softies whivh are a lot better.

More softies

There's still loads I need to put in the shop, but you can go have a look now already: my Etsy shop. And pass on the link to anyone who might be interested! ;-)

This little one will be in the shop too. Although I almost can't part with her, she's so darn cute! I mean, just look at that hair! And I totally love the colours. Who would have thought that a dish towel could become something so adorable?! Love. That. Hair.

I made another one of those softies (I really! need to think of a name for them!) for a swap I'm participating in over on Swap-bot. It had to be made from something recycled, so I made it from one of my mum's old skirts. I think it turned out pretty darn cute too. I just hope the recipient likes it!

Baby gifts

We went to see baby Amelia today, and she was quite adorable. And you know this must be true, coming from me, cause I ain't one to swoon over babies normally! ;-)

As you can see, I made another softie, which I also quite like, so I don't feel bad for not giving them the one I had originally intended. I actually think the face is cuter on this one; look at the little freckles on the cheeks!

The two onesies (I believe this is what they are called..?) are store-bought, but I stencilled the text on them using freezer paper - this is an absolutely fabulous invention!

And I think they liked all of it. Which makes me very happy. To be honest, I wasn't sure if they'd appreciate home made stuff...

A new softie and she's (mostly) pink!

I've actually been making some new stuff this week. One of them is this softie, which I was going to give to T's little new niece (she's 3 days old and is called Amelia), but since I'm quite in love with it, I don't think I will. Also because I'm not completely sure that the parents will appreciate my home made softies the way they should be appreciated (and loved!). So I think I'm keeping this one and then I'll make another one...

I'm not sure how I got the idea to make the softie from patchwork, but I did and I like the way it turned out. Of course I had to take a picture of the patchwork piece before I cut it. Cause the colours are just so darn appealing to me. pink with some other colours. I love it. It's like looking at candy, only it's fabric! Yum!

I've been thinking that I might make a tutorial for this softie. Not that it's particularly difficult to suss out how it's made... ;-) Below are a couple of extra pictures of it.
