Funny face

I am going through the pictures from our honeymoon (to Rome), I want to finally get our album done - it's only been 9 months! I came upon this one, it won't make it into the album (with 1000+ pictures not all will make the cut!), but I like it. It was taken one of the last days we were there. Tony had gone back to the hotel ahead of me, so I was left to my own devices = stopping to take as many silly pictures as I fancied! ;-)

I was almost back at the hotel at this point, the entrance is just around the corner to the right from where the picture was taken. The roof terrace of the hotel overlooks the Santa Maria Maggiore church which is directly to my left. Well, across a busy street to my left, but what street in Rome isn't busy?!

Ok, I guess this post didn't have much point, other than to relive a small memory from our lovely holiday in the Eternal City. And that graffiti-ed face is quite funny, don't you agree?

Drawing in Rome

Oh jeez, Blogger is being silly and not letting me upload pictures! Apart from these two that is. Obviously. They are a couple of the drawings I made in Rome. More in this set on Flickr. Some are pretty terrible, but I'm uploading ALL of them, to show the complete picture, so to speak.

Tony gave me a sketchbook for Christmas probably in 2006 and I've kept it for "something special" ever since. Well, if our honeymoon wasn't the appropriate time to use it, I don't what is.

And I drew! In Rome! Almost every day. So proud of that, because at home that rarely happens. I am so, so happy that I actively made that a part of every day. Tony was a great motivator for me, encouraging me to draw. even if it was a bit boring for him at times. But he made the most of it and brought a long a book to read while I drew. And he called me his 'artist wife', how cute is that?!

As I have said before, a thing or a place really gets under your skin when you draw it. You're not just taking an instant to take a picture, you have to sit down and observe it. Look at the details and then physically put those details down on the paper.

The sketchbook isn't full, but it is over half full. The rest of the pages I have decided to write about things that I remember from Rome. Either just randomly, or by looking at the drawings. Oh this is such a special thing to have! I don't think I can properly describe how much these drawings mean to me. Admittedly, they are not all terribly great, but that is not the point of them. Although, I will say this: the more I drew, the better the drawings seemed to get.

The point is exactly to draw. And to make the place part of you. I can look at this drawing from the baths of Caracalla and exactly remember how hot it was that day, but in the shade, where I was sitting under a tree, it was quite pleasant. And it was so quiet despite there being a pretty busy road nearby...

I can only recommend drawing when you go on holiday - and also at home! I am not very good at doing the latter. Which is silly, because home life should be appreciated and remembered too. It is just as valuable (if not more!) and interesting and unfamiliar, if we just let it be.

And don't worry if you think your drawings suck. It doesn't matter. You have to start somewhere. More than likely, some of your first attempts will be crap and others will be fantastic. You just gotta keep at it. And bloody hell, if drawing some exotic locale isn't motivation to sit down and notice things, I don't know what is!

Sorry, I've been going on long enough about this. But that is just because it is so important to me. I wish for everyone to be able to experience the joy of drawing. Drawing in general, and certainly on location. To take ownership (not physically, of course!) of a place is so amazing...

The horse up there is the first horse I have ever drawn! And I think it would actually have turned out pretty decent, but, alas, we shall never know for sure. The driver of the carriage decided to bugger off before I finished drawing the horse! Sometimes speed is just as important as careful observation!

Italian soundtrack

I think one of the best souvenirs you can buy are cds from wherever it is that you have been to visit. I think music can really transport you to a time and a place. Don't you agree? I wasn't able to find the cds for these two songs, though, so Youtube will have to do.

This one is by a chap called Ligabue. I think he's supposed to be good looking in that rugged kinda way. Doesn't appeal to me. Ick. But I do like the song, Il mio pensiero, and I like the video too.

Looking at a lot of the Italian music videos (male singers), makes you wonder a bit. It seems like most of them are not terribly attractive - yeah, yeah, it's not about how you look, but HELLO! have you ever seen MTV? Not a single ugly person on there, right?! ;-) And for some reason most of them have some kind of beard! Are beards HOT in Italy?

This next one is Ritornerò by Max Pezzali. It's a cute and sentimental video. I guess it goes quite well with the song. This is my favourite of the two. I think I'm gonna have to see if I can lay my hands on this cd so I can listen to it over and over again!

Sleep + eat

This is (part of) the view from our hotel room. The church is Santa Maria Maggiore, one of Rome's grandest churches. From the terrace at the top of the hotel you can look directly down on the church. If you're tall enough to look over the wall, that is. If you're not, you'll have to settle for looking at the top of the church and the column in front of it. Oh, and a view of the rest of Rome.

Our hotel room! As you can see, Tony's books had already made themselves comfortable by the time I took this picture. The wallpaper wasn't wallpaper at all, but fabric. Rather fancy.

As you can imagine, being a pizza fiend, I had to have pizza for dinner on the first night in Rome. And bloody delicious it was as well! Simple Margherita pizza is all I need. Simple is best when it comes to pizza. Luckily, that is exactly how Italians make it. Not a bit of pineapple in sight!

Very long post, with many, many pictures from Rome

Right-o. This is the first batch of pictures from our honeymoon. These are just a small selection of the pictures I took from the sightseeing bus we went on through the historical centre. Some are of actual sights, others are shots of streets and people there... Enjoy!

Scooters are everywhere. Seems like most people own one.

Not a terribly interesting building, I just thought it looked pretty.

These guys were having a very animated conversation. Very Roman. And notice one of them has a scooter!

Colosseum

Another shot of the Colosseum.

Arch of Constantine. To the right of it is the Colosseum, behind it is the Forum and on the left is the palatine hill.

This is part of the Palatine hill. One of Rome's seven hills.

The Palatine hill seen from the other side. The track in front of it outlines Circus Maximus where horse races were held in Roman times. Interestingly, today people use it for exercising their running muscles.

Another shot towards the Roman ruins on the Palatine, from the other side of Circus Maximus.

A police man controlling the traffic on Piazza Venezia.

Temple of Hercules in Forum Boarium. Across the street is Santa Maria in Cosmedin where Bocca della Verità can be found.

Campidoglio - Capitol. The facades of the buildings at the top of the stairs and the geometric pavement were designed by Michelangelo. The back of Campidoglio overlooks the Forum.

You will find a little van like this next to most tourist attractions. Usually, more than one. They charge ridiculous prices for things like crisps, soft drinks and ice cream.

The Vittorio Emanuele II monument. It is a bit of a monstrosity and has many nick names. It also houses the eternal flame and is somewhat the holiest of holy places. They are quite strict about what you can, or rather can't, do while you're on the premises. Don't sit down, don't eat or drink, don't run, don't shout. Basically, you must be in awe of the place. If you're not, uniformed guys with whistles will tell you off!

Palazzo Venezia. Mussolini used to give speeches from the balcony to the right.

I can't remember which one, but this is a church. There are many, many churches in Rome!

Castel Sant' Angelo. Named for the angel at the top, it was originally the mausoleum of emperor Hadrian, but later served both as prison and citadel.

I have no idea what these girls were up to. I believe their sashes have names of countries on them. A beauty contest of some sort?

San Pietro - Saint Peter's

A flying donkey on a house. If that doesn't merit a photo, I don't know what does!

Ara Pacis - Altar of Peace. It celebrates the peace throughout the Mediterranean area created by emperor Augustus.

In Rome it is very helpful to have a small car. Although, it doesn't really seem to matter so much. Romans tend to park pretty much wherever they want to.

This is a typical petrol station in Rome. Most of them still have a chap who will fill your car or scooter for you.

Feeling the credit crunch? Maybe buying a lottery ticket from one of the little booths will make your life a bit better!

Termini, the grand train station in Rome. It is absolutely massive! So massive is it, that the police drive around on Segways! Unfortunately, we do not have pictures of this slightly amusing sight! Trains from all over Italy converge here and so do the two Roman metro lines.

Bottiglia blu

Still only going through my (our) pictures from Bella Roma. More than 1,000! And that's not even counting the ones from Tony's phone camera and the Lomo! So how would you like them? Day by day? Sight by sight? Themes? Happy medium?

This one is from the Colosseum. I liked the strangeness of the plastic bottle against the stone pillar. :-)
