Thrifted tablecloth bag

Or the "oh my god I can't f****** believe I made this and I was there" bag. But I did make it, and I'm so bloody proud of myself. It took several sketches to sort out in my head how to put this baby together. And then, hours and hours of cutting and ironing on stabiliser and pinning and sewing.

But now it's done and I'm soooo happy! It is a tablecloth I bought in a charity shop in Denmark ages ago. All this time it has been sitting in a drawer with no specific purpose in mind. But then a little while ago I suddenly thought "hey, that tablecloth is pretty thick fabric, I'll make it into a carry-on bag". It is bound to be lighter than the trolley cases we normally use as carry-on, which means I can stuff more in it. Which is very good, especially if you're travelling only with carry-on. But more about that in a wee while.

And this is what I needed that long zipper for that I mentioned a little while ago. I found a solution and it seems to be working perfectly. So far anyway. I need to test the bag with proper weight in it. A blanket and a cushion don't weigh 10 kilos!

My main worry is that the lining and the outside are only attached to each other at the zipper. I would like to sew the two layers together, but it's probably going to be a nightmare putting that through the sewing machine. A hand job, methinks. Unless you can tell me a nifty way of doing it that doesn't involve dismantling the bag. 'Coz that ain't gonna happen.

The lining fabric is from IKEA. Last year, perhaps? Or the year before. Actually, I think it was. Nice happy colours and they go well with the tablecloth. Oh and in this picture you can see the cushion inside the bag. How lovely. :-)

I would like to say that there's a tutorial coming for this. But I can't, because there isn't. Too much thinking about how to make it in the process, so no brain power left to think about taking pictures. However, it is not impossible that I'll make a smaller version of this at some point, and then a tutorial might pop up. We shall see. Right now I'm quite happy to just pat myself on the back over a job well done.

Mushrooms and penguins

A little while ago I had the idea to make a mushroom stamp and the other day I thought it might be fun to use it on some kraft paper for wrapping paper. So I made some today. Pretty cute if I do say so myself. :-)

The tag is cut from one of the Christmas cards we got last year. A nice bit of recycling, I think. Of course you have to remember to save the cards and remember where you put them. And I like the randomness of these tags. You've just got to make it work with the paper and ribbon you've got.

I don't get a lot of actual crafting done lately - I blame the lack of daylight! But I did manage to make this little pouch. I'm taking it on the flight for all those little things... Like my passport and purse. I hate having to leave them in my carry-on bag during the flight. But this pouch is so small that I can hide it next to me in the seat. We usually get the wing seats (because those have more leg-room and Tony's got long legs, ya know) and you're not allowed to keep your handbag with you.

Recycled paper lanterns - a tutorial

Yay! It looks like the FTP upload has been fixed. Nice one, Blogger.

Anyway, here's a fun little thing you can make for Christmas - and at other times if you want, of course. I used to make loads of similar ones when I was little. Paper lanterns, made from recycled privacy envelopes.

What you will need: old envelopes (you know the kind you get bills and bank statements in, they usually have some kind of lovely print inside) or other paper, scissors (fancy ones if you have them, I used pinking sheers) and a glue stick.

First 'clean' your envelope, you don't want the window bit, so you end up with a rectangle. Fold it 2-3 times on the long side. Make sure that each section is the same width so you don't cut into the wrong bit by accident.

Now cut along the folds. You can for example make triangular cuts, which will turn into diamond shapes or just make straight cuts close together (they will open up when you glue the lantern together).

Now you should have something kinda like this. If you made triangular cuts, that is. Make sure that all the folds are straight so they will stay bendy.

If you want you can cut along the top and bottom edges. Glue the short edges together and that is your lantern! Squash it down a bit so the folds 'stick out' a bit. Do it better than what I've done in the picture here. ;-)

Now get some tea-lights - please use a glass votive or something similar, you really shouldn't put the lantern over the light as it is (even if I've done that in the picture below!), fire and paper don't go together, m'kay?

Depending on the colour of your paper, it might be nice to use a votive in coloured glass, to add an extra bit of colour. Right, that's it. I hope you enjoyed this wee tutorial. :-)

Tiny notepads

Inspired by these over at A Little Hut - but Patricia's are a lot neater than mine! ;-)
