Happy mis-match

Remember all those pillowcases I got in the bargain bin in IKEA a little while ago? I've put them to use now! Along with some other bargain corner finds + some thrifted fabric and some that were given to me. There are 2 or 3 that I have bought from a fabric shop.

All these fabrics are completely mis-matched but I think they go very well together anyway. Even the ones that were given to me and that I don't really fancy so much. I guess all fabrics find their use eventually, eh? ;-)

I still need to back it - there won't be a middle layer because I want it to be as light as possible. I am hoping to find some suitable thrifted fabric when we go to Denmark. Charity shops in Denmark are way better than overhere. Only a little over a week until we go overthere - can't wait! :-)

Quilt in colour

Hey, this is the mini quilt I've been working on. I decided to use white stitches for the quilting. The way I did the stitching made the stitches make a pattern (unintentionally) on their own on the back.

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. I've been subjected to way too much talkig today to make alot of sense myself. Watching the West Wing for 8 hours straight will do that to ya. Also, Leo Macgerry just died and Matt Santos won the election! *

*No, I am not as much behind the times as this would suggest. I have seen this series of West Wing before! But it is still a pleasure to watch!

Colours wip

So, this is how the Monday mini quilt is looking so far. Although can it technically be called a quilt when there's no middle layer? Anyway, I am still debating with myself how to quilt it. I am thinking of using white straight stitches or maybe red stitches. I dunno, there's just so many possibilities because of all the colours! What would you do?

The back is a light yellow and how cool does it all look up against the light?! It looks like stained glass. Imagine it as a curtain. Well, maybe not..

Apart from a few bits it is made entirely from scraps, I've even used a couple of selvedge. I think it is quite nice to use up scraps, even very little ones. Some of the pieces I've used are not 3cm wide. It is a fun puzzle to see if you can use it all but still have it be pleasing to look at.

Mini Quilt Monday + quilt WIP

There's a group over on Flickr called Mini Quilt Monday, which, you can probably guess, is for mini quilts made (or atleast posted/uploaded) on a Monday. I had a bash at making one today but unfortunately I didn't have time to finish it. I will, though, because I rather like it! It is made entirely from scraps from other projects. Amazing what you can get out of scraps, eh? No idea what I'll be using this mini quilt for, but that really doesn't matter that much. I get to play with colour and use up some of all those scraps I've got in a carrier bag.

Some of the scraps came from cutting fabric for this quilt. It is for Tony's cousin's new baby daughter. And it's another excuse to play with colour.

Hey, hey, I'm the monkey!

Sorry, don't know what could possibly have put that song in my head. ;-) So, hey, this is the project which has occupied my time and mind a lot the past week. A baby quilt. Not for us, no no. Don't you go gettin' any silly ideas!

The making of it included both a lengthy waffling about with the contents of my fabric drawer(s) and a 2 hour round trip to our local IKEA which is only 5 minutes away. The buses are a bit funny at the moment...

Edit: I've entered the quilt in a wee contest on Make Baby Stuff. You can find my entry right here. I'd be much obliged if you'd vote for it! :-)

My plan was to use only upcycled fabric, but I didn't have enough (most of them are pinks and greens, BIG surprise!) to make the spectrum type design I had in mind, so I turned to the solid colours.

It is machine quilted diagonally in a colour corresponding to each stripe. Oh man, it took ages to do that! Changing the colour and such! The colours are on the back too, so there's a bit of colour there as well. I think if I were to do it again, I might keep it the same colour as the back...

I didn't want to be too precise about the measurements in this, so the stripes don't match up exactly, nor do the diagonal lines. Which is why I call it the Don't Worry Be Happy quilt. I'd rather enjoy the colours than fiddle with something as trivial as measuring...

It is self-bound (I think that's the right term..?), meaning that the back fabric was cut larger than the top and batting and then folded over to make the edge. This part is hand-sewn; I didn't want to have any too obvious stitches on this bit. I did have a bit of trouble doing the corners, they ways of doing them I've found on the interwebs (where else?) didn't work for me. Probably nothing to do with their methods! It's me... ;-)

The batting is just another bit of the cotton, same as the backing, to make it very light. And to make it a bit easier to quilt for a newbie like me.

To say that I'm chuffed with the result would be an understatement. I love the colours I ended up using. And I love that it is almost like the small sketch I made in my sketchbook. i like it when things are simple, but with a twist, i.e. the reversed stripe. Now, of course, I want to make a big one for our bed.

When I told Tony this, I do believe that his reply was o......k. He he. He needn't fear, I haven't got the time to make it at the moment anyway! ;-) I'll just put it on the long list of "wish I had the time or materials to make this".

Just a couple...

...of things I made while off sick from work last week.

Not sure what I'm going to do with this yet. It is quite small, but not big enough for a cushion cover - and I don't think Tony would like the colour combo anyway. ;-)

I haven't made anything with Fimo in years! And I used to make loads when I was 10-12 years old. Although in retrospect most of it was pretty crap, but there you go...

Right now Tony is playing with the Wii and that is rather funny to listen to/watch. He gets very into it and yells at the "people" in the games (the Sports package that came with it). "Oh, you f****** muppet!" He he he! ;-)

I need your opinion - please leave a comment!

Remember this baby blanket I made..? I have been thinking of making some to sell. But I'm not sure it would be worth it. It does take a decent chunk of time to make one, and I'm wondering if people would be prepared to pay for the time put into making it. I've had a look on Etsy to see what price similar blankets are listed at.

Most prices are in the $30-45 range. Which seems really low to me, unless these people are some kind of speed crocheters! Also, a lot of the blankets are made from acrylic yarn and I guess that's quite cheap? I don't like acrylic and I certainly wouldn't use it for a baby blanket. But maybe that's just me? I used a super soft cotton, and the material for a blanket of this size would probably cost me around $17 /£8...

So I'm wondering what would be a fair price for a blanket like this?

And on a completely unrelated note: what do you use as the middle layer in a quilt (I don't even know what that would be called!)? Are there cheaper things you can use as a substitute?

1987 Spring Fling

I keep forgetting to show and tell about this here wee quilt I made the other day. I had very big plans for it, but ended up doing something simple. Which probably isn't such a bad idea when you've never made a quilt before!

So here's a close-up of the top and below is a close-up of the back.

I intentionally used yellow and black/white because those are colours I normally (subconsciously) avoid. So I figured, since I was already doing something new, I might as well push myself colour wise.

And I'm actually surprised that I really like it - the colours, I mean. Maybe those colours aren't so 'scary' after all! Or possibly it helps that they are combined with the pink flowers. And all together they are the "1987 Spring Fling" quilt.

More quilts in my future, I think.

Whiplash category: project. And there's supposed to be a button here, but for some reason it doesn't show up!
