Now with pincushions

Oh my, how did this happen? I have a new little shop with pincushions. Because, um, well... I get kinda obsessed with making them and, really, how many pincushions does one person need?

Making pincushions is a fun way to play with different prints and colours. And it's a great way to use some of my thrifted/vintage fabrics. Like that bear in a boat in the top right picture. A bear! In a small sailboat! How cute is that? :-)

Hope you like it. :-)

Happy for pins

See? More pincushions. They are such fun to make. Picking the fabrics to go together (and they must be just right), and the fabric for the back, the thread and the buttons. I love playing with colour like this. ...bet you would never have guessed that!

And a couple that are more figurative. A tiny Happyscape to hold in my tiny hand. And a wee house. I like houses...

Lost to the sea

Pincushion Challenge - Sea. Not sure where the idea for this came from. I guess I wanted to do something I didn't know I wanted to do. If that makes sense. It's a pretty big pincushion, firmly stuffed, so really it's just as nice to hold in your hand.

The text on it says "I lost my heart at sea. I lost my heart to the sea". Not sure what that means; it just popped into my head one night when I couldn't sleep.

Rainbow + buttons + waves

Here's a current wip. I started it (late!) last night while watching an episode of The Long Way Round. Oi, the rough look really suits Ewan. *dreamy* ;-)

I made another pincushion! Actually, I made two, but the second one hasn't been stuffed yet. Maybe tomorrow. I'm still liking the look with the buttons. Obviously, otherwise I wouldn't have used them...

I finished Tony's blanket!! Meaning: I ran out of yarn. Still, it is usable and when we go to Denmark next I'll pick up some more of that yarn so I can finish it properly. It's quite amazing how differently two different batches of the same colour can turn out SO far apart. The two colours that are not variegated are supposed to be the same colour. How about that?! Anyway, I really like the randomness of the colours, it really is quite ocean-y, I think.

Pincushion challenge: Something New

Pincushion seem from above
Pincushion challenge! Try something new! The new I've tried is pretty subtle, but still.

Pincushion blues
I rarely use buttons, but on this pincushion there's quite a few!

Pincushion reds
One for each colour on the sides of the pincushion. It was actually quite fun to look through my buttons to find the right colour. Maybe I should use buttons more...

I've manually uploaded the pictures to my domain, please let me know if they look kinda weird, like warped or stretched or something...

Autumn - Pincushion challenge

Why I always wait 'till almost the 11th hour to finish the pincushion challenges, I shall never know. But there you go, it's finished. Or rather, they are finished, because I actually made 3 for this one! Of course, they are pretty much the same, but hey.

I wanted to make something a little less time consuming than the pincushions I normally make, so the things which make them autumn-y are the colours of the leaves and the back. To me, autumn is very much about colour and not so much to do with particular events. For example, being Danish, Halloween is not part of my traditions, so there's not the same associations as for some people.

I stamped the word for autumn in three different languages on the pincushions; English, Danish and Italian. Just because I wanted to do some stamping and add a wee bit of blue - because I autumn also makes me think of incredibly blue skies. Well, if I'm lucky. Rain and blue skies usually exclude one another, eh!?

Pincushion challenge - Summertime

I won't blame you for thinking I might have fallen off the face of the Earth (isn't that a peculiar expression?), but I promise I haven't. I've just not done much crafting. Or not finished anything...

Apart from tonight! So the Pincushion challenge gives you two months to make a pincushion, and since I had a few elaborate ideas about what Summertime means for me, I didn't get round to making the pincushion 'till yesterday afternoon!! But I made it, and this is it. It's not any of those elaborate ideas. Because I suddenly remembered that this is what I always think of when I think of summer.

It is what I think of when I think of summer in Denmark; blue sky with a few fluffy white clouds, yellow rape seed fields and green bushes and trees. And some poppies to add a bit of red - the red was supposed to come from Dannebrog (the Danish flag), but it didn't quite go with the rest of the elements.

I've not done much embroidery lately (I'm blaming that on my crochet infatuation!), so it was quite nice to just do some stitching again. So relaxing. I even did some during my lunch hour at work today. I think they are getting used to me working on my projects at work.

Among others I've used the French knot and the buttonhole wheel (the poppy heads); I'd never thought of just doing a half or a quarter of a buttonhole wheel, I really like how it looks! And that's the beauty of the TAST challenge, to explore and learn...

Pincushion challenge: Edible

Oi, I've been really slacking with the pincushion challenge this time around. I've had the idea for it for a-g-e-s, but I just didn't get round to making it. But there it is. Or they are - cause I actually made two!

The theme was edible, so I've made a couple of traditional Danish cakes. At the back is what is supposed to be the top bit of a rather large cake called a kransekage (ring cake), which is a tower made from rings of what is basically baked marzipan (yummy, yummy, yummy!). Kransekage is what Danes will usually have at a wedding.

The cake in front is a napoleonshat, which has a marzipan centre and chocolate on the bottom. It is also very, very yummy. There is a picture of the real thing at the bottom of this post.

I'm not entirely sure why I decided to make these cakes into pincushions - other than feeling slightly homesick at times...

Anyway. This type of cakes is something unique to Denmark. Our culinary heritage so to speak. Even the EU has said so, according to this article (in Danish, unfortunately for you non-Danish speakers). This is because they are still made according to old traditions, by individual bakers, and hasn't been commercialised.

I hope this post wasn't too boring... it's less about pincushions than about Danish cakes... ;-)

Snow over London

London pincushion
Originally uploaded by wardi.
Nah, not really snow, but a wee snow globe like pincushion. Ever since I made the Winter Wonderland one, I knew I had to do more. You know, the touristy kind of snow globe. What city should I do next?

It is very satisfying to stitch the snow, and I love how it feels to run my fingers over them. Cutting out the skyline silhouette was a bit tricky, and I'm not sure it is that obvious that it's London, unless you know of course. The silhouette goes all the way around the globe, so you really have to click on over to the Flickr set to see the rest of the 'sides'...

* * *

And here are the bunnies I've been hinting at. They'll go in the shop in the next couple of days. They are Easter egg cozies, but really, they are just as perfect for just standing around looking cute/pretty. There'll be three sets of four, with one of each colour.
Whole bunch'a bunnies!

My new pincushion

My new pincushion
Originally uploaded by wardi.
I made a new pincushion. Yeah, that's a shocker! But this is one I'm actually using. Even bigger shock!

I'm getting quite a collection of pincushions, what with the Pincushion Challenge and all, but I don't really use them. They're my fancy pincushions! ;-)

This one isn't very fancy, just a, well, cushion that I stitched across with my sewing machine to just give it a wee bit of decoration. The fabric is from a thrifted pillow case. See how that's all coming together? Pincushion made from a pillow case? Well, I think it's funny, anyway.

And speaking of cushions and such, I'm working on new covers for our sofa cushions. We've had the current ones for a looong time and it's time for a change! Should be done in a couple of days. Hopefully. ;-)

Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland
Originally uploaded by wardi.
I missed the last Pincushion Challenge because I didn't sign up for the swap involved in time, but this time I'm doing it, yay!

When I saw the theme for this one, Winter Wonderland, I had only two thoughts in my head: snow globes and Elvis' singing Winter Wonderland.

And since I couldn't figure out how to make a pincushion in the shape of Elvis singing that song, I went for the snow globe in stead. I had big plans for what I was going to embroider on it, but I decided to keep it simple.

When I was embroidering the house I wasn't sure if I'd be happy with the outcome, but I think it turned out rather cute! I think the thing I like the best is the snow at the top. It's just so nice to run your fingers over them...

Pincushion swap

Pincushion swap
Originally uploaded by wardi.
I received the pincushion(s!) from the swap I mentioned a little while ago. Yay! I couldn't be happier with this swap from Sherry.

The pincushions are so cute. I totally love them! And they are so different from anything I'd ever make and that is so cool; it's so inspiring!

Other than the actual pincushions she also sent me some chocolate (I'm being good and sharing them with T! He he.) and some very pretty pins. And just look at the pretty bags the pincushions were wrapped in, those leaves are so sweet.

There are some more pictures of the package in this set.

Pincushion challenge - Recycle

Recycle pincushions bottom
Originally uploaded by wardi.
More pincushions!

The theme for August- September is Recycle, and in this picture you see the bit I recycled: some Mexican oilcloth place mats. I've had them for years, but don't really use them, so I thought I might as well put them to good use. The place mats look like this.

The top of the pincushions are not recycled though, it's felt embroidered with some Mexican inspired skulls (I believe they are called calaveras).

It's felt, but you know I think it looks kinda like marcipan...

Mmmm.. marcipan...

And you know, the waterlily pincushions are available in my shop. :-)

Another pincushion

Blue waterlily pincushion
Originally uploaded by wardi.
This time I made a blue one. More are coming in different colours.

But the next blue one is for my mum. My dear mum who just can't get over the fact that I've started doing all this sewing! Well, I barely can't believe it either.

Anyway, this particular blue one is FOR SALE in my shop.

Let me know if you'd like one, but prefer a different colour. I'm all for customising! ;-)

June Pincushion Challenge

Pink pincushion
Originally uploaded by wardi.

I am early with this one! Wahey! And I didn't just make one pincushion - I made two. Go me!

Anyway, enough patting myself on the back. Although I'm just so chuffed with these pincushions, I can't help myself!

They are water lilies. So that's the flower part, and they are pincushions. But wait, there's MORE! Cause it's also a brooch. Although a fairly large one.

The reason it's a brooch as well is that when I'm sewing something by hand or embroidering, I have a bad habit of sticking my needle into my t-shirt when I change the thread. And that is potentially dangerous, right?!

So I had this flash of inspiration while I was doing some sketches for the flower pincushions - why not wear the pincushion?? So here they are. I think I'm gonna have to do some more actually... ;-)

Go here to see the pincushion in use.

And there's a few FOR SALE in my shop!

Pincushion challenge - Fruit

Pincushion challenge - Fruit
Originally uploaded by wardi.

There's this nifty thing called the Pincushion Challenge - and I dig pincushion so I had to join it! The theme for May was fruit, and I thought I didn't want to do an apple or a strawberry or whatever - too easy, too obvious.

So I did a bit of research into what is actually a fruit and I decided on these two: the Carambola (aka Star fruit) and the Pitaya. I'd never heard of a Pitaya before (although I think I must have seen them..just didn't know the name).

They are made of felt with a bit of embroidery on the carambola. The green colour on the carambola and the triangles of the pitaya is actually a bit of food dye diluted with water and then painted on the wool.

I've had these almost-done for a couple of weeks. Almost-done because I couldn't decide how to finish the carambola. But finished it is now.

There are a couple more pictures of them here and here.

Rococo pincushion

Rococo pincushion
Originally uploaded by wardi.

I made this a few days ago - but I completely forgot to show it off. Hehe.

I call it a Rococo pincushion because the fabric has a sort of rocaille pattern. And I think the pink border and the gold mesh adds to the look too. Although the Rococo-ness was completely unintentional.
