The magic flow

Since I started using acrylic paint again earlier this year I have really got back into painting. Which makes me all colours of happy.

The thing that makes me most happy about painting is how you can make something appear out of nothing. Nevermind what you are actually painting. You combine colours in a way that makes a person appear, or a dog or a sofa. It's like magic. To me, anyway.

Of course, the more I do it, the better I get at capturing exactly what is in my head. Although, I think it as really, really important to not force it. If you do that, there will be tears. You can't force creativity. You can gently nudge it, but other than that, just go with the flow and it will take you to places you never even knew existed.

Sneaky peeky

Sneak peek at the next embroidery pattern. A bit of a challenge because I limited the colours I could use. Not an easy thing for me, you know, because I like using most of them at any given time! ;-)

And.. I have been painting. Just a little bit. But I have lots of ideas for more paintings so I am sure there will be more coming soon. I've been using mainly acrylics lately and that does make it quicker to finish a painting. I guess it also helps that they are fairly small paintings. :-)

I am always a work in progress

Working on a self portrait. In theory, that shouldn't be anymore difficult than drawing/painting anything else. You observe light and dark and paint corresponding light and dark on your canvas.

But theory is one thing and reality is another entirely. Because portaits are of people and people have all these little quirks and, oh dear lord, a personality. Making that come out of the light and dark is very difficult indeed. Maybe that's why I don't do portraits in general. ;-)

This is just the very first step. Changes have already happened. The right eye, for example, looks way too big in this picture, but that has been fixed and the eyebrows as well. One thing I am wondering at the moment is whether to add colour or leave it white with burnt umber and yellow ochre (the current colours).

We'll see. That is, after all, the nature of a work in progress.

Hope you're having a happy weekend. :-)

Listen to polar bears

Painting. I love painting. And I love polar bears. I think my first painting was of polar bears on some snowy rocks. Probably around 20 years ago. Gave it to my aunt from Greenland and, amazingly, she still has it!

Well, I guess you can never get away from your first loves, so here I am, painting polar bears again.

And painting humans. Not something I feel terribly confident painting. Humans are difficult! The perfectionist part of me that I try very hard to suppress is only too happy to point fingers at my attempts at capturing the human form. I suspect the trick is to not let it and just use my eyes, instead of what I 'know' about humans.

Listening to our senses when we create is terribly important, I think. And then we have to practice. So much. Always practice, so your hands, your body knows when the creation feels right.

Listen and practice. And then, maybe, it will take flight. Everything we create has the potential to lead us to more creations. If we let them. Even the 'failed' ones; listen and learn.

The bottom two of these paintings are in my newly revived other Etsy shop.

Something to share

This is a small painting I've been working on for a little while, a couple of weeks maybe. It is not completely finished yet, but I already love it so much I had to share it. And it's just fiddly little details that still need doing, so in a way it is finished...

And don't ask me what it means, because I really don't know. Maybe I should ask you: what do YOU see in this?

Drama!

Hey, hey, a little sneak peek at the painting I'm working on. I'm soooooo happy with it. I want to finish it now, now, now so I can see what it will actually look like!

Anyway.

Wow. Crazy day at work today. I mean, crazier than usual at the moment. This morning, a shelf full of glasses fell off its arms and all the glass crashed on the floor, just a couple of inches from where I was sitting on the floor. But somehow not a single bit of glass hit me. My legs were still shaking 20 minutes later, though. Bloody hell.

And half an hour before I finished work there was a fight (!!!!) between some customers. Not entirely sure what the hell it was all about. People got spat on and hit in the face/head (two of my colleagues who were trying to break it up and get a baby out of harm's way), smashed lamps and glasses on the floor. 4 or 5 policemen, our security guard and the management and who knows how many colleagues trying to break it up.

Nice with a bit of drama, eh? Atleast it gives me something sort of interesting to blog about, right? ;-)

Heh, and as I was leaving work, I got in the queue to buy some bits; I was clearly not working, I had my coat on, my bag and a pile of stuff to pay for. And yet, a customer came up to me and said "excuse me, have you got so and so?!" I just looked at her and said "sorry, not working right now" and carried on with what I was doing. I really felt like adding a 'fuck off', but the situation didn't call for that, after all. ;-)

Old paintings

I had a bit of tidy up of my things in my parents' loft and something I was looking through were some old paintings I've done years ago.

One of them is this old Berber (or maybe Tuareg...I can't remember) woman which I painted from a book. I think it's probably one of my best paintings ever. When it comes to portraits anyway. The face is so detailed, nice contrasts between light and dark areas. And I like the hood because it's so loose...

Unfortunately, the support has become damaged, and can't be saved, so the painting has to go the way of the bin. Along with some other, more or less finished, paintings.

It's funny to look at those paintings, how different they are! And it's kind of sad to have to throw them away. But I think my dad might just find a spot for a couple of them in their garage, like he's done with some other old paintings.

The rest of the old paintings are in this set on Flickr. Look for the ones called "Old painting - ".

Red shoes for sale

Red shoes
Originally uploaded by wardi.
I just finished this painting. I've been wanting to make another one since I sent the first one to my sister last year. Of course, it seems a little silly to want a painting and then selling it anyway. But.

I realised that it's not so much because I want to keep the painting, it's the joy of painting the shapes of these shoes and using the red and green together, that made me want to do the painting again.

And I may just have to do another at some point. Or I might do one with different colours. Who knows.

Anyway, the painting is 12cm x 18cm (approx. 4.5inches x 7inches), it doesn't need a frame as it's painted around the edge (or however you describe that...), but would look nice in a frame too. It is oil on canvas and since I only just finished it, it's not dry yet, so I can't send it off straight away. Just so you know. ;-)

It has a pricetag of £23 GBP and that includes postage. Email me if you want it. :-)

Sleepy Owl painting

Sleepy Owl
Originally uploaded by wardi.
I'm not sure why, but I've been doing some wee paintings of owls lately. And I don't think I'm de-owled yet! Huh, I think I just invented a word there. ;-)

This one is my favourite so far. You can see the other ones in my Painting set on Flickr.

Sold!

Back turned
Originally uploaded by wardi.
I sold this painting. Yay! I'm so happy about that, 'cause I know it's going to get a good home with its new owner. This very moment it is winding its way to Madrid. Hopefully, it'll get there in one piece and soon too!
