The big purge - take one

Look at all this stuff. It's my stuff. It's been in my parents' loft for the past 4 years. This is just some of it, actually. But sorting through it, we're taking baby steps. Well, I am. Not letting anyone else sort it, because how will they know what is treasure and what is kind of treasure? ;-)

Most of it is books. I love books and it is really difficult for me to get rid of books. But looking at all the books I in these boxes and considering that I haven't missed (most of) them in the past fours without them... well, I guess it is time to let go of some of them. Even some that I really love. Because you can't keep everything forever. Can you?

So the books have been sorted: books to keep - including my collection of very old books, most of which are over 100 years old! books to try and sell and books that my parents can dispose off how they see fit.

Why is it difficult to let go off things? Is it the thought of all the money 'wasted'? Why do we get emotionally attached to Stuff? I have moved home many times and everytime there's all this stuff that i have to move around too. Some of it I can definitely (proven fact!) live without. I find it kind of difficult to deal with my two conflicting feelings about stuff: I want stuff: pretty things and books and maybe a few cds; and how about some pretty bowls or cushion covers. Etc. And I also know that I don't need most of that and I really like my surroundings to be as calm and simple as possible...

How about you? How do you deal with Stuff?

So much stuff

We've borrowed a carpet cleaner from Tony's sister and yesterday Tony had the day off work so we could, er, get to work on the carpets. Moving furniture and stuff from living room to bedroom, cleaning carpet, wait for it to dry, shuffle furniture to the dry parts, clean the rest, wait for it to dry overnight. And this morning I've been putting everything back. Tomorrow evening, the sofa or the bedroom floor. A lot of work, and it doesn't look like it made a terribly big difference. Although the dirty water that was sucked out of the carpet would definitely suggest otherwise!

But the moving about of stuff has had a knock-on effect: I've had a proper sorting through of a LOT of stuff. There's now nothing under the sofa, very little under the coffee table, and under the bed, well! I've thrown away seveal bags worth of stuff (so much stuff, what is up with that?!)

There is also a large bag (picture) of things I've made. I've taken a good look at it all and asked myself that all important question: is this making me happy when it is just lying under the bed gathering dust? The answer, of course, is no, so something is going to happen with them...

Next to godliness. Ha.

A nice, tidy wardrobe, that was one of my goals this week: mission complete. Hurrah! I don't really like tidying/organising/sorting, so I don't do it until I just can't live with it No More. Of course, this is a vicious circle; if I just did it a little bit all the time, it would never get to the super annoying "I can barely open the wardrobe door without things falling out" stage.

While I was at it, I also sorted through my chest of drawers with craft supplies (ok, we might as well call it by its real name, my Fabric Stash Drawers, seeing as 2 out of 3 drawers are full of fabric!) and 2 storage bins (more fabric + yarn). It is quite liberating to let go of stuff. I threw away 3 mixed large bags mostly containing clothes I haven't worn in ages or was in the "oh my god, what were you thinking!?" category. Letting go of that was awesome! Then there's a bunch of discarded sewing projects which are going to be cut up and go into my scrap bag + some bits and bobs that I think I will use in future swaps (no, they are not dodgy things the moths have had a go at!)

So now I can start the weekend with that weight lifted off my shoulder. Although, it feels like it's been weekend for several days, because my poor sweetie has been home from work the last 3 days. At first I was a bit mean, teasing him that it was the much-feared man cold. But the freezing while burning up yesterday would suggest otherwise!

Also, for you UK folks: I don't know if you remember that we went to see the filming of an episode of QI last year? Well, we did. And it was so much fun and we've been waiting (and waiting and waiting) for it to finally air and tonight it will! BBC 1 at 9:00 PM. I don't know if it was just more fun because we were actually there, but as I recall it, it was one of the funniest episodes so far. I guess we'll know tonight. And if you like QI, I really, REALLY encourage you to watch it. Seriously.

To make things just that little bit tidier

Apart from the slightly creased fabric, you can't tell exactly how quick and dirty a job this bag actually was. But nevermind. The fabrics are cute - and it's even reversible for those days when I feel less in the mood for HOT PINK.

It is exactly big enough to hold the yarn for my current crochet project, which is its intended purpose! So the yarn colours will be foreverly changing. Loverly.

- no, I can't explain it... But I bet you would have done the same. Right?

Adorn magazines. Interested?

Sadly, Adorn magazine is no longer with us. It is a shame really, it was terribly pretty! Well, in my ongoing (yes, really, hubby!) effort to de-clutter and get rid of stuff that is just hidden away in corners, I want to get rid of these. I've got Summer '06 (the very first issue) and all of 2007. £3 each or £14 for all five. Incl. postage to the UK. Email me if you're interested.

Floss in wee bags

Look, these are the bags I bought last weekend for organising embroidery floss. Each bag has a little hole in it and then you stick it on that little ring in the middle. So far this system is working, but that might be because I've not done any embroidery the past week. I think you are really only supposed to put one skein (erm, is that the right name for it? The heat has started to effect my brain, I suspect...) in each bag, but I threw caution to the wind and put in several! ;-)

Well, I was lying a little bit, I actually did some embroidery last night, but I only used scraps of floss left over from when I organised my floss the other day. So the colours in this are completely random. And I like random, so this is working out rather swell! I have no clue what to use this for, other than using up those odds and ends of floss. Decorating a bag perhaps..?

Night-y night

Lately, I've been working on getting a bit more organised. In most areas of my life, because I am quite messy and not at all organised. I want to change that! If only a tiny little bit. So I've been tuning my filters in Gmail, to make it do the work for me. Although whether that will make me better at actually answering email... well, that's a completely different story.

Another thing I've done is get myself a notebook, not too big, but not too small either, which lives on my desk. In it I write down all the things I would normally just scrawl on the nearest scrap of paper. Some of that stuff was barely readable, but my new system is a lot better. Everything goes in the same notebook, but I have a little column on the left hand side where I draw a little icon that tells me what the note is about. Very clever if I do say so myself.

Right-o. I best go to bed. It is almost 1am. Oh! Which also means there's only one week until my birthday. I like my birthday. Even if it does mean I'm getting older. Do you like your birthday? Here's what I'm hoping will happen on next Saturday:
I'll get some nice mail
Maybe some phone calls
Enjoy a meal with Tony's family
Maybe go to the cinema with Tony (Flashbacks of a Fool looks interesting)
Dare I hope for: cake, sunshine and some flowers?

Selvedge + Japanese books for sale/swap

Hey, I'm doing some more organising and trying to get rid of stuff. Tony is going to be so proud of me. And I've actually already put some magazines in the recycling bin! The following you can buy for a very reasonable price or swap for a similar item. Or tapestry wool. ;-)

Selvedge no. 20, the Scandinavia issue. Very lovely (as always), but less about Denmark than I'd hoped. ;-) So I'm not going to hang onto it. It's £4.50 + postage, which depends on where you are of course. Rates for UK second class, rates for international.

This book is absolutely adorably cute, and I think I'd probably have more use for it if I had kids... So it has to go too. It's £5.00 + postage. Use the links above to find out about postage rates.

There are some really fun ideas for embellishment with embroidery in this book. I don't really want to get rid of this one, but I've not used it as much as I should to justify keeping it. So that's also £5.00 + postage.

If you're interested in any of these, just send me an email. :-)

There, that's much better

I spent part of today turning the above into the below. Isn't that a lot better? Less random stuff and more clean. Just what that corner of the bedroom needed.

I like it when things are clean and there's no clutter, but unfortunately I'm not very good at maintaining that state for long. So we'll see how long this lasts... ;-)

Do you want it?

As hard as it is for me to do so, I've been getting rid of some of my ever-growing pile(s) of magazines. I've been happily cutting out pictures, articles and recipes. Much to the delight of Tony; I suspect he'd rather see them all go in one piece!

Well, some magazines are too pretty and precious to be cut up, especially Selvedge! But in an effort to tidy the place a bit, it has to go. So, if you'd like this issue of Selvedge, send me an email. It's £4.50 + postage, which is around £1.50-2.00 if you're in England...

Sorted!

This afternoon I slowly enjoyed this.

While turning this...

...into this. In preparation for the scrap swap. I kinda feel like doing another scrap swap. Any one want to play?
