Christmas Is All Around

More Christmas music/video goodness. This one from one of my favourite films, 'Love, Actually'. Not many films can almost bring me to tears every-single-time I watch it, but this one can.

This video is a song that features in that film, an almost has-been rock singer is trying to revive his career with a kind-of strange Christmas song (which ends up being number 1 - a big deal every year in the UK..). It is sung by Bill Nighy in the role as Billy Mack.

Christmas is all around - unfortunately, I can't embed the video, so you'll have to scoot over to YouTube to see it. This video is possibly NSFW, it's got scantily clad ladies and semi pole-dancing. ;-)

Mary's Boy Child

So.. today is the fourth Sunday before Christmas and that kicks off the Christmas fun good and proper in my family. Some decorations go up, Christmas baking definitely gets under way and so on. And we light the first candle in the 'adventskrans' - a wreath with four candles, one for each of the four Sundays before Christmas.

And I thought we should have some Christmas music here on the blog too. To ease ourselves into the reindeer and jingle bells madness, we'll start with this classic from Boney M. You've probably heard it loads of times before, but have you seen the video? It is hilarious! Especially the guy in the group. For one, his strange hairstyle: an afro with a parting? Also, his incredibly tight trousers! But the funniest thing is his dancing. Oh it is impossible to describe in words. Although I encourage you to try in the comments! :-D

Happy Sunday!

Spell bound

Oh this song is making me happy in atleast five different ways. If it doesn't make you want to dance, well... I don't even want to know ya. (That's a tiny West Wing quote, that is, hehe).

Alphabeat's new single The Spell, in case you are curious.

Happy Saturday! :-)

PS - the volume setting on that video is set to high, so you may need to turn it down. Ye be warned. ;-)

Mystery song

For years I've had a song title in my head, a vague memory of where I heard the song, but no real recollection of what the song sounded like or when I heard it.

The song is called 'Dormir Dehors' ("sleep outside") and I heard it on the radio in my parents car as we were driving somewhere in Belgium. Pretty vague, huh? Why this particular song (title) stuck in my head, I really don't know.

Anyway, the other day I thought to myself 'well, I should look it up on the internet!'. And so I did, and I found out that it is a song from 1994! Which made no sense to me whatsoever because my last recollection of any roadtrip that would have brought me anywhere near Belgium, was in 2001. And why would they be playing such an old song on the radio? Made no sense.

Then! I suddenly remembered that in 1995, on our family holiday to the Bourgogne region in France, we were also in Paris for a few days. And how would you normally drive to Paris from Denmark? Yes, you guessed it, through Belgium! Mystery solved. Hooray!

So, without further ado, for your listening/viewing pleasure: Dormir Dehors by Daran.

What does the title mean?

From time to time, on Channel 4, there are little stings (I think you call it) for something called trylifeinanotherlanguage.com. Aimed at school kids, I believe, to get them to try different languages in school or something. But, nevermind. The video above is one of them and the song is so beautiful. No idea what it is about, it is in Spanish. And clearly, Spanish is one of the languages I haven't tried. ;-) But, beautiful it is, and so is the video itself. To her the whole song, go to Nubla's myspace page and click the 'Nada Se Olvida' in the player on the right.

Asteroid Galaxy Tour

You may have heard this song in an iPod ad, but of course that only plays a small part of it. The whole thing is pretty awesome, I think. It is called 'Around the Bend' by Asteroid Galaxy Tour. A Danish group, yay! The girl sounds a lot like Nelly Furtado, in fact I thought it was her when I first heard the song. Listen to the song, then listen to it again. It is sure to get you into a grrroovy mood! :-)

BC Jean is awesome

If you're anywhere near a radio that plays pop music, I bet you've heard the song "If I Were a Boy", sung by Beyonce. It is a nice song. But it is even better (infinitely so) in its original version by BC Jean. I urge you to pop over to her myspace site and listen to it. Seriously, it's the best thing you could listen to today!

A musical gift

Hey, I had this idea the other day - whether it's a good idea or not, I'll let you be the judge of that. This is the idea: because I like discovering new music - and especially music which isn't necessarily in the English language - I thought maybe some of you would like to share your favourite music with me.

It would something like this: every day (or once a week or a couple of times a week) in December we will post a Youtube video with a song we like. It can be old or new, it can be your most favouritest ever song or artist or band. It would be fun to hear music from different countries, whether in the language of the country or in English, it doesn't matter. If you like it, and think others should know about this fab song too, then post it! But please, try to avoid chart music.. you know the kind I mean, right? ;-)

Also, I'm not particularly looking for Christmas music, but if you feel like sharing that, heck who am I to object?! Is it too early still to listen to Christmas music? ;-)

Måndagsbarn

I just luuuurve this song, Måndagsbarn, by Veronica Maggio. The lyrics are in Swedish but the music is... universal! So lovely; everytime I hear it on the radio (thank you DR online!) it puts me in a happy mood.

It actually reminds me a little of Lisa Nilsson's Himlen Runt Hörnet. I love Swedish music! Maybe one day I should do a post about the Swedish music I love... :-)

Italian soundtrack

I think one of the best souvenirs you can buy are cds from wherever it is that you have been to visit. I think music can really transport you to a time and a place. Don't you agree? I wasn't able to find the cds for these two songs, though, so Youtube will have to do.

This one is by a chap called Ligabue. I think he's supposed to be good looking in that rugged kinda way. Doesn't appeal to me. Ick. But I do like the song, Il mio pensiero, and I like the video too.

Looking at a lot of the Italian music videos (male singers), makes you wonder a bit. It seems like most of them are not terribly attractive - yeah, yeah, it's not about how you look, but HELLO! have you ever seen MTV? Not a single ugly person on there, right?! ;-) And for some reason most of them have some kind of beard! Are beards HOT in Italy?

This next one is Ritornerò by Max Pezzali. It's a cute and sentimental video. I guess it goes quite well with the song. This is my favourite of the two. I think I'm gonna have to see if I can lay my hands on this cd so I can listen to it over and over again!

Note to self: bring earplugs

Sooo, I actually haven't told you about the REM concert, have I? I really should have, because it's already starting to get a bit fuzzy. Old age, no doubt!!

It took absolutely AGES to get to Twickenham Stadium - two hours or so, door to door. That included a train ride, a tube ride, a bus ride and a 15-20 minute walk. Bloody hell, what I do to get to see those boys, eh?! Thankfully, it was quicker going home.

Anyway, we got there as the Guillemots were just finishing, so we didn't actually see them because we were getting some drinks and using the loo and I was hemming and hawing over getting a t-shirt or not. I didn't in the end, because I would never wear it. I'm just not a band tee kinda gal.

Editors were brilliant! I recognised most of their songs although I've not consciously listened to them much before this. I guess they must play them lots on the Danish radio station I usually listen to.

It was quite noisy... maybe that's what concerts are supposed to be, but it was quite distracting, so in the end I had to put some rolled up bits of toilet paper in my ears. All better! It took that jarring edge off. So if you forget your earplugs, toilet paper is your friend. ;-)

The REM boys themselves were awesomeness. In a different way than what I've seen/heard before. It was very much a rock concert, very powerful and there were few of the slower songs. I think it might have been experienced better if we had been in the 'pit' - the seating didn't exactly invite you to dance. Well, except for the two b!+£#3$ behind us. They decided that of course they could stand up and dance, thus blocking the view of the people behind them. When they were asked to please sit down, their reply was "well, we want to dance, so fuck off!" Lovely.

Pardon the quality of the pictures, btw. But what can you do with just a phone camera when you're at the opposite end from the stage? That didn't mean there was nothing to look at, though. REM are really great at using the big screens beyond just showing pictures of the band in action. It is an integral part of the show. And an excellent part at that, if you ask me.

I love REM and this was a great concert (although not the best one I've been to), but I'm still waiting to hear Nightswimming live. They keep not playing it! And perhaps I won't ever get to see it, because Tony isn't exactly a fan of them so he'll probably not want to go again. And I wouldn't really want to go alone!

Oh! One funny thing about Twickenham; it is really close to Heathrow Airport, so planes kept flying overhead. I was wondering if the people in them could hear, or atleast, see that there was a party going on below...

I've experienced REM at three different types of concert now, festival (pouring rain!), indoor concert arena and now at a stadium concert. The first one (the festival) is still my favourite. Maybe because I got within eye contact distance of Michael Stipe? Or because it was the first one? Perhaps it was the fact that we had been waiting in the rain all evening for them to begin and it kept on raining, but it just didn't matter.

If you want to read a more indepth description of the Twickenham concert, go here.

Set list:
1. Living Well Is The Best Revenge 2. These Days 3. The Wake-Up Bomb 4. What’s The Frequency, Kenneth? 5. Drive 6. Man-Sized Wreath 7. Disturbance At The Heron House 8. Ignoreland 9. Walk Unafraid 10. Hollow Man 11. Fall On Me 12. Electrolite 13. The Great Beyond 14. I’m Gonna DJ 15. Exhuming McCarthy 16. The One I Love 17. I’ve Been High 18. Let Me In 19. Horse To Water 20. Bad Day 21. Orange Crush 22. Imitation Of Life

Encore

23. Supernatural Superserious 24. Losing My Religion 25. Perfect Circle 26. Country Feedback 27. It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) 28. Man On The Moon

For my sister

Maaaany years ago, my sister bought this cd, and I borrowed it and fell in love with it. It is a rather quirky cd, full of interesting combinations of sound. Think Beck, but different. Er.

Well, in the last few years it seems to have gone walkabouts. Which is a real shame, being the really, really great cd that it is. So the other day I decided that, dagnammit, I'm going to buy it so I can listen to it again.

I got it off eBay for £3. Not bad, eh? Great music to listen to while I send some thoughts over to my sister (hej H!) in California.

The artist, by the way, is Imani Coppola and the cd is called Chupacabra. You can see the video for the best know song from the album over on Youtube, it's called Legend of a Cowgirl.

Accelerate

Weeee! Yesterday my birthday present from Tony finally arrived! Tickets to see REM at Twickenham Stadium in August! I just can't wait. Did you know that I really (really, really, really!) love REM? I've been a fan of them for like, 16 years! I love, love, love REM!

Heh. Sorry. Gettin' carried away here... ;-)

And soured cream

Leftovers from last night. Isn't that the best kind of lunch, really? No waste...

This morning I've been listening to the amazing album "As I Am" by Alicia Keys. I absolutely love it. She is so very soul full, in so very many ways.

Nneka - Heartbeat

This is Nneka and the Danish radio station I listen to on the internet is playing her song "Heartbeat" A LOT this week. Too right, because it's amazing! You can check it out right here on Youtube. Sorry, embedding it is not possible, so you will have to make that extra mouse click to hear/watch it. But I think it is worth it!

Hopefully, a nice song will distract you from the fact that there's been very little crafting going here. But maybe something will turn up soon? Usually, something does turn up. Eventually.
