A bit of news!

There's a new blog header - nice and festive. But not too much. ;-)
But that's not the real news! This is: I finally bagged a job! Huzzah! I start on Monday. Not sure about my hours yet and all that, but hopefully it will be 'a lot' leading up to Christmas.
So posts may become a bit less frequent around here now that I am no longer a lady of leisure as it were. ;-)
Now to fully enjoy this last proper weekend in 'freedom' (I suspect I'll be working some weekend hours as this is a retail job).Labels: just stuff

Beauty + preparations
I have a book with leaves and...other stuff and in that book there is a picture of 'beauty berries''. They are the same colour as these, so I am wondering if they, in fact, are beauty berries. It is a terribly pretty and exotic name, don't you think? Of course, I am too lazy to dig out the actual book, so maybe we'll never know if these are beauty berries. Love the colour!
Lots of preparations going on for the fair (in Loughton) on Nov. 15th. At the moment I am wondering what would be a good (and cheap!) way to display brooches. Any ideas?
Also, Id' like some kind of height on the table, but I haven't really got anything I can use fot that; although maybe using my small drawers from IKEA might be an idea. If I turn it around so it shows the back and then I can use the drawers to hold ..stuff. Especially if I paint it with blackboard paint, then I can write on it as well!
And, I can't decide what would be a good colour for the table cloth. But it has to be a solid colour because most of my items are pretty colourful. So maybe black or white, so it's completely neutral. Any thoughts? What do you do?Labels: just stuff

Wasting telemarketers' time
I've had a few calls from my mobile provider this week and they have all been stupid and a complete waste of time. Like, in one they asked if I had a laptop (no) and if I was planning on getting one (again, no). After I told them no, they had no further need to talk to me on that occasion. Waste. Of. My. Time.
So, I have made a decision. If they can waste my time, by golly, I am going to waste theirs too.
Last night there was yet another call, this is approximately how it went down:
Telemarketer (TM): Good evening, is this Mrs so-and-so?
Me: Speaking
TM: hello, I am calling from 'mobile company'. Are you having a nice evening?
Me: Yes, thank you. How is your evening going?
TM: Fine, thank you.
Me: So have you got any nice plans for the weekend?
TM: Uhm, sorry?
Me: Do you have any nice plans for the weekend?
TM: uh..umm..errr..ah.. well, not working (confused laugh)
Me: Oh that sounds nice
TM: 'mobile company' would like to give you an expensive dongle-
Me: No, thank you.
TM: Oh.. can I ask why not?
Me: I don't need one.
TM: But-
Me: Thank you. Bye.
I am a bit disappointed that I couldn't keep the pointless chit-chat going for longer. But the call took me by surprise (they always do, don't they?) Maybe I should have a script prepared; just like they have. I wonder how long I could keep it going, there must be a breaking point somewhere, because I am sure they have a certain amount of calls they need to make.
Ah well. Any suggestions for stupid things to talk to them about? Also, I'd love to hear your stories if you try a similar tactic. :-)Labels: just stuff

Some stitched stuff
Work in progress. Which has been delayed way longer than I intended. Hopefully it will be finished this week. Or early next week at the latest.
And completely unrelated, I feel so very, very clever because I may have (atleast somewhat) solved our unbearably-hot flat problem. Last week I bought a couple of thermal blankets and this afternoon I hung them between the curtains and the window in the living room. Not 100% sure that it is due to my genious, yet simple, solution, but the living room and kitchen definitely feel cooler tonight. We haven't even got the big fan on, which we normally do! :-)Labels: just stuff, wip

Oh, Expedit
I wouldn't mind getting rid of my huge desk and replacing it with this IKEA Expedit bookcase + desk combo. Only, I'd have the half size bookcase and the whole thing in birch, not walnut as in this picture. Think of all the storage I could have in all those little compartments. Whether they would be tidy little compartments, now that's a different matter! ;-)Labels: just stuff

Min Margretheskål smelter!
Sorry, this post is in Danish. I am hoping any Danish readers might be able to help... ;-)
:-)Labels: just stuff

Flowers on glass
This was made on my hen afternoon. My friends abducted me, with the co-operation of my parents (!) and after a picnic overlooking a field we went to the studio of this glass artist where we spent a couple of hours making this large bowl/plate. It was a lot of fun, but not in the ha-ha kind of way. More in the 'wow this is cool, better get the most out of it' way so I was pretty quiet and very concentrated about getting the most out of it.
The others let me sketch out a design and then we just went to town with powdered glass and 'ink'. The funny thing is, the colours of the powder were a lot different than the finished result so I had no idea how it had turned out until my friends gave it to use on our wedding day. I reckon it's a real beauty! We did a good job that afternoon. And it's an afternoon I won't forget.
Then later we had a BBQ at one friend's house - my parents had entertained Tony and they brought him round for the BBQ too. Nice food, nice conversation, even a bit of crochet.
* * *
I apologise to those who have emailed me recently (thank you!), I will reply very soon, but this week I am intent on getting our wedding and honeymoon albums done (finally!), so I may be a bit slow to reply. I think a focused effort is what is needed to get those albums done, even if it does mean putting other things aside. Even making more embroidery patterns!
Right, back I go to fine-tuning photos... :-)Labels: just stuff, wedding

Until my head clears
This photo doesn't really have anything to do with anything, but it is one of my favourite walls in Århus (DK). I would have liked to take some nice pictures in Århus, but both times we went there last we were in Denmark, it was kinda dark and rainy... so I guess I'll have to wait until next time before I can show off how pretty my home town is.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that activity here may be somewhat limited for the next few days. Tony very kindly passed on the cold he had over the weekend so now I've got it. And it's horrid. (whine!!) If I manage to get the dishes done today, it will be a small miracle! ;-)
Right, the sofa is calling; time to watch some daytime telly (ok, maybe not!) and take a wee nap.Labels: just stuff

We walked down the High street in town this afternoon and we passed a woman with her two little kids. Just as we were passing them, one of them said "muuuuummy..? I love you". How freakin' cute is that??Labels: just stuff, mosaic monday

Seize the (overcast) day!
This is my photo shoot set up. Veeeery lo-tec. And quite messy with all the 'props' and stuff. Spent most of the afternoon taking pictures. Not terribly interesting, really. ;-)
And not very crafty. But I have done some little embroideries lately and if all goes well, I'll show you that later. But first, dinner to make!Labels: just stuff

Pins'n'Roses
I was playing around with my camera this afternoon. Took looots of pictures for no reason. I'm startin' to think that's the best reason. Practicing composition. Good stuff. More on Flickr.
Last night I dreamt that I bit my tongue somethin' awful. However, the pain in my tongue would suggest that it wasn't a dream after all. Hate it when that happens.
Lighthouses, oldfashioned birdcages and sailing ships are on my mind lately... Embroidery pattern?Labels: just stuff, oh so pretty

Takin' a break
I need to take a wee break for a few days. Some stuff needs to be sorted out and stuff. I'll let y'all know who will be getting the embroidery pattern when I come back.
I may be back sooner rather than later, but right now, break is needed. Here's a little chap to keep you company in the meantime. He's part of a new painting I'm working on. :-)Labels: just stuff

Cake and stuff
Finally got this picture off my phone. It is the cake we made for Mother's Day last weekend. We. Made. That! Well, Tony made the cake, we iced it together and I made the flowers and leaves. It was very well received! I wouldn't mind making cakes all the time with my sweetie.
But how many cakes can two people eat on a regular basis? ;-) I think we are going to have to make a fancy cake when we go to Denmark. It is rare to have the opportunity to make this sort of thing for my parents - better make the most of it...
* * *
Do you have easy access to Speedball Speedy-Carve (or Speedy-Stamp)? It is a pink block (6"x12") of eraser like material that you use to make stamps with... I can't find it anywhere here that it is not really expensive. The one place I've bought it from before, it is out of stock. Boo. If you are able to get your hands on some, maybe we can do a swap for something handmade, some fat quarters of vintage Danish fabric or a Happyscape or something? Happy to re-imburse you instead, as well.
Don't forget that there is 15% off everything in the shop all this weekend!Labels: cake, just stuff

Sewing for hooks
Look, Nicky! I finally made something with the things you sent! What do you think? It is a new case/bag for my crochet hooks. Better than that plastic, made in China, crap one I had until today.
I think you will recognise the things you sent me? But just in case: the zip, some of the fabric in the 'patchwork' and the lining.
It was also an opportunity to try out a new zipper technique for small bags / pouches like this. But more about that when I've 'perfected' it. ;-)
I just want to say sorry if you are waiting for an email or something from me. Since Sunday and Monday (especially) were computer free days, I have a wee bit of a bottle neck going on. The bottle neck being me and my procrastinating ways. But I am slowly getting it all done. Slowly being the operative word. We're going to Denmark at the end of next month (for my birthday, yay!) and I've got a few projects that have to be done by then. Secret projects that I can't possibly talk about. Har, har.
Anyway, I am also working on that eraser stamp carving tutorial + a translation of the crochet bicycle seat cover pattern that I posted about a little while ago. So, yes. Emails etc will come, they will just be a bit slow.Labels: just stuff, sewing

Serenity
Time management is not one of my strongest suits, so I am always rushing around gettings in order for when my dear husband comes home from work. There's really no need for him to see exactly how messy and all over the place I can be (hello, living room floor full of fabric!)
But today, everything is done, the housework, going to the shops - all before lunch! Heck, I even prepared everything for dinner! I feel so serene, I can't believe it! So now all I have to do is sit here and look pretty. Even today's crafting session wasn't a messy one.
Anyway, I really just wanted to point you in the direction of Linda's blog The Best Free Craft Articles. As the name says; lots of free how-to's and stuff. There's a cool list of crafty podcasts that I must check out at some point. She is even featuring a few of my tutorials at the moment! For example, how to decorate a cup or mug, my yellow mobile and more. Pretty awesome! Thanks, Linda!
Also, just to let Jesse and my sister know: yesterday I finally sent your small but pretty prizes from the 1000 posts giveaway. Hope you like 'em! Sorry about the delay, but what can you do? Time management = not my strongest suit. ;-)
The picture is from my parents' garden when we were there last September. The tree is my dad's apple tree. My dad's. And don't you forget it. ;-)Labels: just stuff, thank you

My dad's. And don't you forget it. ;-)

Whine!
I am working on a couple of tutorials, one of them using one of the pillow cases I got in IKEA the other day. Not sure if I will get either of them finished today. After all, I have other things to think about; today is Whiny Wednesday. Boo.
Anyway, and completely unrelated: are there any knitters out there reading this? Can you recommend a good book for an impatient beginner? I can do knit an purl stitches, that is all. But I have a project in mind which requires cables and working in the round... and now I may sound like I'm totally down with what those are, but really I am not. I just know how to write the words.
Help! Anyone?!Labels: just stuff

Hey, it's Stumpy!
I know it is a wee bit difficult to see (again with the mobile phone camera!), but that pidgeon only has one foot!! If foot is the right term, I am no bird expert! One foot and a stump (on the left).
It was quite fascinating to watch it. At first, before I realised it had only one foot, I thought 'oh, that is strange, that pidgeon's foot points inward.' But then I noticed the stump and of course it makes perfect sense that it would point the remaining foot towards the middle of its body to stabilise itself.
Well, I just thought I'd share this little story of nature's hardiness. Also, I know my sister will appreciate it. A three-legged dog it is not, I realise that, but it should result in atleast one 'Awwwwwwwww'!Labels: just stuff

Well, that's it then
I did get a wee bit emotional today, saying goodbye to people, especially my team leader and the other lady who worked on the home department. But on the whole I did manage to get through the day without blubbering.
I've not always been happy about working there, and it's certainly not my dream job by any definition, but the people I worked with are really great. I don't think I've ever worked in a place where people were so welcoming and friendly.
The last month everyone's really come together and stuck together. And that has been really nice to see - and to be a part of. Well, apart from a few people. But that comes as no surprise. ;-)
What is next, who knows. The next couple of weeks I'm going to wind down a bit, relax, spend time doing creative stuff. And visit Denmark for a few days. Looking forward to that. I need some parental hugs!Labels: just stuff

Oh where indeed
It is sooooo cold today! I think I'm going to curl up on the sofa with a blanket and a book. Doesn't that sound like an excellent plan?
Still playing with my Christmas present from Tony. I do believe it will be somewhat life changing. It's a Wacom Bamboo One pen + tablet for the computer. So much easier to draw with than a mouse!Labels: just stuff

Do me a favour, please
If you live in the UK, please sign the petition to save Woolies. And please also spread the word on your blogs. If the goverment can save the banks, surely they can save an institution like Woolies?
Right?
Please sign it. I'd like to see Woolies celebrate its 100th year. Also, I'd like to keep my job. :-)
Thank you.Labels: just stuff

Sylko sewing thread for cheaps?
Hey, do you need some sewing thread? Or cotton as some people call it.. strange when it is not even made from cotton. But nevermind, I digress...
I'm fairly certain there's a box of Sylko thread somewhere in the warehouse, which I could probably lay my hands on fairly cheaply. I reckon there's about 150-200, mixed colours. Not sure how much they would go for, but I think £5 for 10-20 probably isn't unrealistic.
If a few of you are interested, I'll see if I can get my hands on them. I doubt that there's anyone else at work who'd want them. Please let me know as soon as possible (by email, please!), so I can talk to them on Thursday when I'm at work next.Labels: just stuff

Seriously
Crafting, and stuff, is still happening here. But, this being the "Golden Quarter", it is very busy at work so I am working more at the moment. Which means I barely see the light of day. And never at a time when it is possible for me to take some photos of said crafting. Which is annoying, I like to document what I make so I can tell myself: look! just look at those pictures of that stuff; you made that, whaddaya mean you never get anything done?! just shut up already. jeeez!
But enough about my conversations with myself.
I've installed the newest version of Gimp and it looks like saving in CMYK and Lab is actually possible now. Although I have yet to try it... I'm too busy working through the pictures from our wedding. Yes, that album is still not anywhere near done. I really should be working on the pictures this very minute, but obviously I'm not. I blame it on my dear husband, he said "can you please move the stuff from the old computer that you put on the external drive onto your new computer." Why, certainly!
So I'm doing exactly that, while reading feeds in Google Reader - I have finally taken the jump from Bloglines. For the last month (probably more) it was acting weird and I eventually got tired of it. So.
Anyway, this can't possibly be of any interest to you... or can it? Heh.
And something completely unrelated: how do you write an 'about me' page? I feel like I should have one, yet I haven't got a clue what to write on it. I don't want to seem too... self-loving.. I can't think of the English word... I'd be grateful for any advice.Labels: just stuff

New, new, new!
Oh. My. God.
I've got a new computer! A NEW computer! Not just an upgrade to the old one, but a brand new, take it out of the box, plug it in, here we go computer! I have never had that before. My previous ones have been either my dad's old one or one I built with my dad. Which was cool too, it is nice to know exactly what is inside the thing, you know. But this is NEW! And shiny! With a very pretty monitor. Exactly the monitor that I wanted. Flat screen! There's so much room on my desk now, I barely know what to do with it*!
But now I really must stop playing with it - so many things to install and customise! -and go to bed. I'll show you before and after pictures soon. Weeeeeeee! Sorry. I'm just so excited. Giddy!
*don't worry, I'll fill it with stacks of paper and other crap in no time! ;-)Labels: geeky, just stuff

Trees and secrets
This is a terrible picture... and the light wasn't even that bad when I took the picture. Or, I guess, maybe it was. Never mind. I'm just so excited about these Christmas trees that I had to share. I'm sorry that you can't properly see how happy and pretty the colours are together. I'll take some better pictures tomorrow!
Ooh, and I've got a tutorial to share with you! But I can't do that until after Christmas because it is part of a present for my sister and she reads the blog. And I don't want her to get even a sniff of what'll be under that tree! ;-) I like surprises, yes I do.
And speaking of Christmas, here's some Danish Christmas paper from... last year, I think. For some reason, when I'm not feeling well, I get this urge to tidy and purge, and I found this in one of cupboards in the sideboard. I do really like it (it is green!), but seeing as I've not used it for anything since I got it, it's gotta go. But in stead of just putting it in the bin, I thought maybe one of you could use it. It is used, it was wrapped around a present, and I have cut a bit from it to paste into my sketchbook. But there should be enough to use for... something (but probably best not to use it for anything intended to sell). The design, by the way, is either taken directly from, or inspired by papercuts by Hans Christian Andersen.
So, if you want it, it's yours (first come, first serve). Send me an email with your address.Labels: just stuff

Madness between napping
Urgh. I'm staying home from work today. Got a migraine, which is no fun at all. Although, the headache-y part seems to be going away a bit. Thank goodness. But, still, it is a kind of madness to be interacting with this here computer screen. However, when I'm not feeling well, that is when my brain just won't shut up. Maybe it's because the usual filters are not working, so all the crazy ideas in my head are allowed to run wild.
So I need to subject my mind to some kind of input from somewhere else, to keep it busy. That makes sense, doesn't it? But perhaps I should take advantage of a non-filter day and write down the crazy ideas. There could be a couple of gems in there as well.
First I need a bit of breakfast. And another nap.Labels: just stuff

Red shoes. For you?
Hey, these are the red shoes I was going to wear for the wedding, but then didn't. Because of the whole, oh let's change the colour of the dress at the last minute thing. ;-)
I really love these, so pretty, but, well, I don't really wear heels (heals? huh?), so I am going to put them up on eBay. But I thought I'd give you the opportunity first. They are from Clarks, red (obviously) and a UK size 3. Yes, I have very small feet! They are yours for £15 (+ postage) which is less than half the original price.
Any takers? ;-)Labels: just stuff

Monkey love
This guy, er gal, is sitting on the finished project that I mentioned last week. I am veeeeery happy about it! So proud that I. Made. That.
The monkey is a wedding present. It is a very famous monkey in Denmark, designed by Kay Bojesen in 1951. I love it! It's a great example of Danish design. And just so cute.
I'm off to the post office, but when I come back, I'll show you the rest of that project. :-)Labels: just stuff

Just one day left at work
This is a picture from our visit to Oxford last year. It is quite pretty there. Would have been nice to have explored it more. Maybe one day.
I forgot to mention; heh, you didn't seem as repulsed by the peeing squirrel things as I thought you might be. And so I've put together a little squirrel inspired post for when we're away. Which I hope you'll like. :-)
Also, thank you for your mascara suggestions! I decided to go with one that isn't waterproof. As Gen mentioned, if I really do start howling my eyes out, it is much easier to clean up the normal kind. ;-)
Finally, do you have any suggestions for fabric or yarn related shops to visit in Rome? Some pretty fabric from one of my favourite places would be a very nice souvenir indeed.Labels: just stuff

Maybelline eyes?
Hey guys (er, gals), I need a new mascara. A fabulous one! Can you recommend one? It should preferably have all these characteristics: make my lashes look long and full (also with a bit of curl action), be clump-free and quick to apply (i.e. just one or two 'coatings'). Black or dark brown. Waterproof-ness is optional. Reasonably priced and widely available in England.
I recently bought a Maybelline one, the Define-A-Lash Volume Mascara (black waterproof). But I don't know, maybe there's soemthing weird about my lashes, because it doesn't live up to the "no clumps, separation, voluptuous volume" it claims to give. Instead it makes my lashes look like I've been crying and the mascara is making the lash hairs stick together in a very unattractive way.
I used to buy another one from Maybelline, but I haven't seen it in stores in a while. Of course, it doesn't help that I can't remember exactly what it was called...
Anyway, any good mascaras out there that will make my eyes look fab for the wedding?Labels: just stuff

Got any ideas?
Hey, have you got any great ideas, tips or must-see places for Rome? Yes, we do know where we're going! But it's been a fair few years since I was there last and my Tony has never been. So some nice inspiration would be great. I'm looking for something a bit unusual... not necessarily something to be found in a guide book. Maybe even something crafty!?
Random things I'm loving right now: that you can customise the colours of the labels in Gmail. That Firefox is just soooo clever! For example, I just typed in 'ferrovie' (Italian for railways) and it took me straight to the site I wanted. Try doing that in IE! ;-)Labels: just stuff, wedding

Manga me
All the kids are doing it, so I thought I would too. I even did it twice. And I think the second one is probably more accurate. Well, as accurate as these things can be. You know? Here, have a go at manga-fying your face too.Labels: just stuff, meme

Yellow is pretty
Can you? Phew. Our flat is so hot, it's almost too much to stand. But there is one good thing to the heat; they let us go home early from work. So the heat is good for something.
I'm playing with Inkscape, trying to get to know it better. I'm still dreaming of having Illustrator, but for now that is just a dream, so I have to work with what I've got. Right?
But something weird happens when I save an Inkscape .SVG as a plain .SVG file. See? The bits around the speech bubble completely disappear and what on earth is going on with the text? I had to cheat by taking a screen shot of the picture and then pasting that into the Gimp.
Any Inkscape/Gimp geniuses out there who can shed some light on why this happens?Labels: just stuff

Happy + busy
Colourful hair elastics. Aren't they just super happy?
I've been pretty busy today! Went to the library, did some sewing (two finished projects in one day!!), some reading, took some pictures, drew some flowers. I've got a post to do for Feeling Stitchy and a couple for you, but right now I'm off to tidy the mess left by my sewing, start on dinner and maybe clean the bathroom. All before Tony comes home, because we're going to see Kong Fu Panda tonight. Busy, busy, busy!Labels: just stuff

This is all I've got
I'm still playing catch-up from our three day trip to Denmark. It really is a puzzle to me how far behind you can get on email and stuff just because you take out three days.
Or. Maybe I'm just really slow. Of course, it doesn't help that I'm rather slow to begin with! So if you're waiting for an email or some other form of response, it's coming! It will just take a couple of days. Oh 'eck, let's just say Tuesday, when I've got the day off. That way I've not over-promised and you might be surprised by a sooner-than-that reply.
Also, the next interview will be next weekend. :-)
The flowers are from my parents' garden. They have so many pretty flowers, I'm quite jealous!
Ok, I'm off to work on a shawl test...Labels: just stuff

Here, there and everywhere
So, I didn't go to London. But it's ok, I got some long overdue tidying done and that is GOOD. Not as interesting as looking at art in the big city, but there we are, enjoying the very simple things. Like looking at the lavenders which seemingly overnight have become all spiky with shoots just waiting to burst into flower. And the peonies slowly opening to reveal their true beauty.
I also put my name on the list to be a beta tester of Spoonflower (that fabric on demand site that all the kids are talking about). I mean, I had to, right?
If you feel like it, feel free to add me to your friends on Facebook (just search for my name). I am still trying to figure out what the heck you use it for. Other than waste time on silly games and stuff. I really don't get it.
Oh, I gotta just vent a little bit. It really annoys me when people on Flickr bulk invite ALL OF THEIR BLOODY CONTACTS to whatever group they are a part of. To me that's as bad as spam! And it also really annoys me when groups only have group descriptions in, say, Portuguese. Why can't you have just one sentence briefly describing what the group is about? That really turns me off joining a group. Especially if it's a group that has rules - how can you follow rules when you don't know what they are? Ridiculous.
Anyway. In an effort to try and reduce the ever growing piles of things I've made, I'm thinking of selling off these guys. The embroidery (mounted on canvas) for £45 incl. postage and the Happyscape for £25 incl. postage. Email me if you're interested. Tony would thank you, he wouldn't be sorry to see some of my creations go out into the world. ;-)

No pictures. Boo!
Oh jeez. Blogger refuses to upload my pictures, so you'll have to do without the picture of my dinner (yummy home made pizza). Nor can I show you what I've made while playing with Gocco prints this afternoon (but you can pop over to Flickr to have a look at those). And I most definitely can't post the tutorial for foundation-less crochet I've got in the works. Hopefully, picture posting will be back soon. I'm too lazy to keep doing it manually. ;-)
Ta ta for now.Labels: just stuff

I am a flower
I saw this over on Solveig's blog. I thought I'd give it a go too.
I am an
Iris

What Flower
Are You?
"You are a very sensual person. You like to experience all the sights, smells, tastes and textures the world has to offer. Ordinary be damned, because you want to do it all." Take the quiz here.
Also, thank you for all the comments about clotheslines. I'm still trying to get my head around the reasoning behind not having them. Heh.
Oh, if you feel like a bit of silly fun, how about taking my little survey about this blog? You may have done it before, if you have, you don't have to do it again. Unless you really, really want to and/or have changed circumstances. Say, if you have moved to the North Pole. These things, after all, do happen. ;-)Labels: just stuff, meme

It's my birthday!
Well, no. It's not my birthday today, but I still got a birthday present! From my sister and her hubby. I'll show you what was in it later. I'm just about to run off to work.
What is it about parcel deliveries that they must be carried out before you are properly clothed and fit to open the door to anyone, let alone complete strangers? It happens every bloody time and I have to scramble to put something on and straighten my hair. Some kind of sod's law? Or does it just mean that I need to start getting properly dressed as soon as I get out of bed?
Anyway, off I go. I hope I can stay awake; I couldn't fall asleep last night.Labels: just stuff, mail

I've lost it now
I need to send some of you emails, but I just can't be arsed. My feet are freezing, so can you blame me? Not that the two are in any way related (well, my feet are, since they are both attached to me. But I digress. And make very little sense.) So I made that wee picture up there as a distraction: look at the pretty colours: Oooooooo! Of course, it would have taken less time to actually write a couple of emails than play with the fonts in the Gimp. But my brain doesn't want to play today (hence the no sense making), so telly it is. Bye, bye! ;-)Labels: just stuff

Air!
Fan, man! We started out with a tower fan but it was absolutely and utter rubbish. So we got this bad boy in stead. It's frickin' awesome!
Randomly piled together pretty fabrics. And Joppe behind them. We rescued Joppe from the parking lot outside a couple of years ago, he'd been left out there all day, so when we came home late at night and he was still there, we took him! Any Swedes or Danes (and other Nordic peeps too, perhaps?) should know why Joppe is a fitting name for him. ;-)Labels: just stuff

Past things + still alive
These are a couple of illustrations I made while doing a course in "graphic production". That's where I learnt to use Illustrator. I wish I had Illustrator on my computer, but these days I have to make do with Inkscape which just isn't the same thing (or maybe I'm just stupid and don't know how to use it properly). Darn it.
I used this girl on my website for a little time. I made lots of different versions of her holding things: flowers, mistletoe, banana and paint brush.
One of our lavender plants which, against all odds, is still alive. Miracles DO happen. ;-)Labels: just stuff

"You like that song"
Sez Tony. And yes, I do like it. It's called "That's not my name" by The Ting Tings. The video is a bit odd. But then, aren't most music videos? ;-)
I've got lit candles in the window tonight. Danish peeps should know why. Did you remember, too?
It's a Bank Holiday tomorrow and for once I'm not working! So we both get a lie in. Yay! But unfortunately we are going to spring clean the flat. Like "this flat has never been this clean"! My suggestion. I must be mad. ;-)Labels: just stuff, thinking

Pink & green + QI
Today we went to another town so I could spend the vouchers Tony's parents gave me for my birthday for Hobbycraft. I got some embroidery floss, a hoop, some little bags to (hopefully!) help keep my floss organised, a pen for drawing on porcelain and a big (30!) tub of small ink pads and one Cotman half pan watercolour. Don't you just LOVE new craft supplies?!
We also went in some charity shops, but no treasure was to be found. For me anyway, Tony got some books. :-)
On Tuesday we are going to be in the audience for QI! It is first come basis, so there's a slight risk we might not be able to get in. but fingers crossed! I lurrve QI, one. because I love random facts and two, because it is REALLY funny! I would like to see any combination of the following on the 'panel': Sean Lock, Bill Bailey, Rich Hall, Jimmy Carr, Vic Reeves, or Dara O'Briain.
I'm meeting Tony after work (the filming is in the evening), but I'm going up to London before then. Not sure what to do, though. Maybe go draw dead animals at the National History Museum? Or see a free exhibition somewhere? Any ideas?Labels: just stuff, telly

Night-y night
Lately, I've been working on getting a bit more organised. In most areas of my life, because I am quite messy and not at all organised. I want to change that! If only a tiny little bit. So I've been tuning my filters in Gmail, to make it do the work for me. Although whether that will make me better at actually answering email... well, that's a completely different story.
Another thing I've done is get myself a notebook, not too big, but not too small either, which lives on my desk. In it I write down all the things I would normally just scrawl on the nearest scrap of paper. Some of that stuff was barely readable, but my new system is a lot better. Everything goes in the same notebook, but I have a little column on the left hand side where I draw a little icon that tells me what the note is about. Very clever if I do say so myself.
Right-o. I best go to bed. It is almost 1am. Oh! Which also means there's only one week until my birthday. I like my birthday. Even if it does mean I'm getting older. Do you like your birthday? Here's what I'm hoping will happen on next Saturday:
I'll get some nice mail
Maybe some phone calls
Enjoy a meal with Tony's family
Maybe go to the cinema with Tony (Flashbacks of a Fool looks interesting)
Dare I hope for: cake, sunshine and some flowers?Labels: just stuff, organising

Light + blooms
The light was interesting yesterday morning. It made the yellow building look very yellow against the blue sky. I thought it was worth a photo...
Tony and I went for a walk this afternoon. And saw these pretty blooms. Definitely worth a photo! We had to cut the walk short because it started to thunder and rain. We got home just before the rain really started for realz.
It's my birthday soon. I like birthdays, even if they do mean I'm getting older. Oi. This year we're not going to Denmark for my birthday. I'm a bit sad about that, but we have to use most of our holiday for the wedding, so something had to give. It's going to be weird to not be with my family on my birthday, that's only happened a few times before.
Have any of you read the magazine called Artful Blogging? It looks very interesting and inspiring, but of course, there's nowhere in the immediate vicinity I can get my paws on it, so I can't tell for myself. And buying it directly from their website is out of the question. I can't justify the cost of the shipping. Even to me! ;-)
It might just be that I'm getting too little sleep lately (blame it on The Long Way Round being on so late in the evening!), but I'm just feeling really tired and not bothered. So I think I'm going to take a wee break from this internet lark. I'm going to focus on making some things and reading some books and then I'll be back full of spirit and crazy ideas.
Of course, now that I'm saying I'll take a break, I'll probably get my mojo back and start inundating you with posts. Wouldn't that be something! Right, I'm off to admire the third cake Tony has made today; for his colleagues on Monday when it's his last day.Labels: just stuff

This morning
But now it's all gone. And I had such high hopes for the white stuff.
Did I mention? The other night I dreamt that Harrison Ford had kicked the bucket. That was a very strange dream!
Are you Danish? Do you blog about craft and stuff? Please leave a comment so I can check out your blog. But BEWARE, I might ask if I can interview you! ;-)Labels: just stuff

Waffling
Man, I'm pathetic. I get nothing done. This is pretty much the only thing I've got to show after almost a week off from work. Geeez. Happyscape VI is going in the shop once I can get a better picture of it. It's a lovely, lovely day today, but the sun makes the picture taking a wee bit difficult; clouds are better for taking this kind of pictures.
We've started making our invitations, I'll show you some pictures... later. But they are pretty much like the one I was playing around with here. Even got the rounded corners. Manually doing rounded corners, can you imagine that? But it just looks better and you have to suffer for beauty, right?
Ok, I've got that box with my gocco just sitting next to the sofa. I really, really want to just make something with it, but since you can only use the bulbs once, whatever I make has to count. I can't waste the bulbs! So my mind is working on something, something, something. So many ideas. I'm thinking doing something similar to these. I like herbs/plants, and especially the look of the registration (is that the right word..?) being slightly off.
Here's a blog called China Design Now at Liberty which features the artists from that exhibition at the V&A. I thought you might find it interesting.Labels: just stuff

My birthday has come early?
A present has, anyway (aaaaall the way from Japan!). Man, I've wanted a Gocco ever since I first heard of them. Now I've got one. I can't wait to play with it. But should I wait till after my actual birthday?
Sorry to go quiet on you for the last almost-a-week, but my mum's been here and we've been to London and stuff! More about that later, right now I'm off to investigate how you use a Gocco. ;-)Labels: family, just stuff

Wednesday lunch
Mmmmm, homemade hot cross buns. I love the spices and raisins. Warm with melting butter. You can't go wrong with that.
And this just in: Tony called me a wee while ago to tell me that he'd just seen Christopher Lee in the canteen at work. My reaction? "What?! You saw Count Dooku in the canteen!!?"
What do you think of this latest version of the invitation?

Would you buy it?
This is just about the weirdest thing I've ever seen. I mean... c'mon who's going to actually buy that? I really thought it was a joke, but it appears it isn't. Still, "everyone knows that girls who ride enjoy certain benefits", sounds rather... racy, shall we say.Labels: just stuff

Le Café, le soir
I got this book from the library yesterday and inside it I found that postcard. On the back of it it says:
Mi dear mither,
May there be many sunshiney, relaxed days ahead so you can enjoy this! And please can I come?
Happy (early/late) Mothers' Day
lots of love,
Ani xxoo
P.S. I couldn't find a card with tea on it, so had to go for a café instead. Though 'café at night' is a very unBritish notion - you'll just have to go to Europe to find it!
I love finding stuff like this! And unlike most people, I'm not just going to throw it away, I'm pasting it in my sketchbook. I like this sort of randomness and the way it connects people, although they don't know it. I wonder if 'mither' misses her postcard? Labels: inspiration, just stuff

UmBaRella
Hey, how you doin'? Did you get through yesterday's storm alright? For non-UK readers, we had one heck of a storm here yesterday. Oh it was cold! It was windy-windy-windy! It rained! One thing I don't get about the the very windy + rain combination is that people use umbrellas when they go out. I just don't get it. If it's really windy, the umbrella is hardly going to keep you terribly dry and more importantly, the wind is likely to blow your umbrella out of shape and then it's definitely no use to you. The amount of discarded umbrellas I saw yesterday was.. well, lots!
Speaking of umbrellas, isn't it weird that it's called an umbrella? Because wouldn't that mean something like 'little shade'? So it's raining and, logically, you think to yourself I think I will get out my umbrella so I can get in the shade. Right? In Danish it's called 'paraply' which I do believe comes from French 'para pluie', 'against rain', which, as metaphors go, is a much better description. Of course, thinking about the oddity of umbrella, I had to look it up and it turns out that the word doesn't, as such, have anything to do with shade. It comes from the Latin word 'umbel' and is simply influenced by 'ombra', also from latin. I'm sorry if this is getting very strange and boring, but I love this sort of stuff. If you do too, I really (REALLY) ecommend reading the book The Unfolding of Language by Guy Deutscher. It's awesome and very enlightening.
I've been looking on eBay for some stuff for our invitations and earlier I came across a couple of listings where I wouldn't buy from the seller even if I really needed the item. The first one is not too bad, I guess, it's just rather silly. The picture is not very good and in the description it says "If you want a clearer picture please e-mail me and I shall see what I can do". Isn't that bizarre? The picture is people's only proper way to judge a product online, so why not make it clear to begin with? So lazy!
The second one must be written by someone who doesn't know how to switch off Caps Lock because it's all caps and THAT'S JUST LIKE SHOUTING AT PEOPLE, especially when you use the largest available font size. But the weirdest thing about is the returns policy which says: IF YOU AINT HAPPY YOU GET YOUR MONEY BACK. Wow, that sounds really rather aggressive, doesn't it?
Ok, I hope you were somewhat entertained by this post. I'm sorry I haven't got anything crafty to post, but you know how it is, right? However, tomorrow I'm hoping I can be arsed to show you pictures of some more crochet brooches, a blanket I'm making for Tony, some new earrings I got and maybe some other stuff. So tomorrow will be jam-packed, I hope you're up for it! ;-)
Oh, btw, I almost forgot, on Saturday morning I did something I've only done once before here in England: I drove the car! That's a big thing for me, because I really hate not being able to drive here, I don't want to always be a passenger! But it's baby steps before I'll be driving alone, I think. Getting used to the car and roads being opposite is one thing, but there's also a lot more traffic here than in Denmark. Still, I'm proud of myself.
Finally, would you like to test something for me? Tony and I are making a website thing with information for the English guests to our wedding, and it would be great if someone would give us some input about it before we send off our invitations. So you must be able to pretend like you are English (if you are something else, naturally. If you are English, please don't imagine that you are Italian, for example!) and going to our wedding in Denmark. Email me if you want to be our guinea pig! Thank you.
The End.Labels: books, geeky, just stuff

Wonky is good
I wholeheartedly agree with that. And also with the second line: 'never trust a symmetrical loaf'. Isn't that the truth? I don't think my life has ever had any kind of symmetry, and I suspect it never will. So I think I'll adopt this as my new motto: 'wonky is good'. That will save me a lot of grief over wonky craft projects for sure. They will now simply be in keeping with my motto!
Can anyone tell me where February went? I mean, despite it having an extra day, it sure did seem to fly by. Although I reckon it's not just an attribute of February. This morning I was thinking "good gawd, is it really Monday already; wasn't it Monday yesterday?!" Well, in a way it is good that time flies by, spring will be here sooner that way!
Although it kinda already is. There's lots of bushes round here that have already started to greenify, and there's lots of spring flowers on the ground. I think spring is my favourite time of year, when everything comes to life again and colour comes back to the world. And as much as I can't stand the rain and the cold, I wouldn't want to live where there's only the slightest difference in the seasons.Labels: just stuff

Good news + some links
Hey, we really enjoyed National Treasure: Book of Secrets on Wednesday. It's a bit samey as the first one, but I think you can say the same thing about the Indy movies. ;-) I can recommend it.
Yesterday Tony had a job interview and they sure didn't interview a lot of people, or need a lot of time to think things over, because they called back in the afternoon to offer him the job. He is very happy and I'm very proud of him. Of course, I had a good feeling about this interview, because the phone number of his new place of work has 1138 in it. Silly, I know. But I was right, wasn't I? ;-)
A couple of other things: a big happy birthday (yesterday) to the sweet Theresa.
And pop on over to Cheryl's new blog to say hi. She's the reason I finally got my act together and wrote the sketchbook cover tutorial.
Oh, btw, did you take my survey type thing yet? It's just a bit of fun.

Gray + colour
It was really foggy this morning, and in fat stayed like that most of the day. Good job I can add my own colour to the day, eh? ;-) This embroidery is just about finished, only a few stitches still...

New isn't always better
I think I've mentioned that I listen to Danish radio over the internet? Well, the other day DR (= Danmarks Radio) changed the look of their website, and not for the better, in my opinion. It feels really claustrophobic and that green colour is really overpowering. You'd think the news bit (white background) was important to them, but that green block on the right is just really distracting. Of course, this might be their intention, but then they might as well do away with the news all together. And the narrow green block to the left is absolutely horrendous, it's like it's added like an afterthought, squeeeezed in because they had nowhere else to put that content. Which would have worked a lot better if it had been put below the horizontal menu at the top. But of course they couldn't put that there because that's where the sub-menus go. I dunno, you'd expect the website of one of Denmark's largest TV/Radio stations to be better than that. Below is how it used to look - it's a screenshot taken via the internet archive, so it's not completely the way it looked like, but you get the idea. A lot cleaner and spacious.

Hm, rant over. ;-)Labels: just stuff

Gone + Viggo
Obviously I like it when Tony makes chocolate chip muffins. Not that you can tell by this photo that it had chocolate. But trust me. Yummy.
And speaking of someone who's great at what he does, I'm crossing my fingers for Viggo. ;-)Labels: just stuff

Cha cha cha changes
I felt like a change, so I made a new banner. I might change it again, though, it feels a bit cold... And I changed the title of the blog. Not a major change, just to Carina's craftblog. It makes a bit more sense, I think. My name isn't Wardi, after all. ;-) So if you're reading this in Bloglines or similar, this blog will probably have moved places...
***
At the moment we have no hot water. It's been like this for almost a week now. Since last Thursday afternoon. An electrician came out on Friday, but said it was a problem with the pump, so he couldn't do anything, a plumber was needed. But no one could come out at the weekend, so we had to wait 'till Monday. Tony stayed home from work on Monday, but the insurance people called and said that they had given the details to the wrong contractor and now it was too late to find someone to come Monday.
So yesterday a plumber came but all he did was take down the details of the pump and then he buggered off. Today he came back and replaced the pump and for a couple of hours we had hot water. But perhaps that was just sitting in the pipes or something, because at the moment we have only freezing cold water. Hopefully, an electrician can come and check it (and fix it!) tonight. The insurance company that covers this sort of thing for us, is absolutely useless. They've given everyone the wrong bloody address so they've had to call us to find the right place. Tony's had to take today off work as well, so that't two days pretty much wasted on nothing. Bah.Labels: just stuff, nuts'n'bolts

Fog + beans
This was our view this morning. And as the morning progressed, it actually got even foggier! I think fog kind of gives the world the same quiet as snow does... oh I do hope we get some snow in Denmark!
Remember I wondered if 1.8 kilo of jelly beans was too much? Turns out, it's just the right amount. We got them in the post on Friday, yay! And because they are what is called Belly Flops, they have the oddest shapes. So fun! I dare say I prefer them this way. What flavour do you like best? I really like the buttered popcorn one and I hate when by accident I pick up a roasted garlic one - who thought of that horrible-ness?!

It's free, but they don't want it
As you might know, I work in a shop, and there's one thing that puzzles me to no end. Sometimes a customer will come to the till with an item which is Buy One Get One Free (= BOGOF). When we tell them that they can get another one free, most people take it. But some people say no.
It is FREE! Someone is actually giving you something for free, but you don't want it?! What is up with that??
People are weird...Labels: just stuff

Mummipappa!

Hvem er du i Mummidalen?
Mitt resultat:
Mummipappa
Du er Mummipappa! Du er en drømmer og du drømmer deg ofte bort og inn i eventyr. Du er også en håpløs romantikker.
Ta denne quizen på Start.no
Heh, I just found this fun thing chez miss Hedgehog - who are you in the Moomin Valley? Rough translation would be:
You are Moominpappa (or whatever he's called in English)! You are a dreamer and you often drift off into dreams and adventure. You are also a hopeless romantic.
I think it's true. ;-)

In case you were wondering...
Nah, I haven't fallen off the face of the Earth. It did feel like a very tempting alternative, however. From 2am Saturday until noon the same day I spent most of my time in the bathroom. I shall spare you the details, but I did end up going to the nearest Accidents & Emergencies just to make sure everything was ok. It was, except for a bit of blood infection and quite a lot of dehydration (hello, resuscitation fluid I.V!). Fun, huh? Poor Tony, he didn't get much sleep either - and no lunch!
Of course, it also means I've had to miss work today and yesterday, adding to the (unusually for me) large amount of sick days I've had over the last few months. So now I have to have a talk with the asst. manageress. Yeah, totally looking forward to that.
Anyway, I am feeling much better and I'll be back with posts (like the next interview!) as soon as I feel less tired and more inspired.
I hope you had a better weekend than we did! :-)Labels: just stuff

Testing the waters
I'm not going to go all out to write a fabulous blog post in case the FTP posting still isn't working. And I've got loads of things to share, not least another interview, but I just can't be bothered until it all works properly again. You know what I mean? ;-)
Although, I will tell you this: I've begun the process of adding new things to the shop, so maybe you want to have a peek at that? I must say that the adding of things to Etsy is what annoys me about it. It takes for bloody ever, going through 4-5 pages or whatever! Why can't they just have it all on one page? If it was set up a bit like Flickr it would be sooo much quicker! Heh, rant over.
I'll tell you what I've been listening to this morning: the music on my computer. It's an interesting eclectic mix. Behold:
Tenacious D - REM - Samaha (whatever happened to her?) - Madonna - Muppet Show Theme Song - Avril Lavigne - Star Wars soundtrack - Beck - Amy Winehouse - Kent (One of the best things out of Sweden, ever!) - KT Tunstall - Deee-Lite - Volbeat - Cindy Lauper (I love Time After Time!) - Sting (The song Mad About You brings back sooo many memories, yikes!) - Vanessa Carlton - Evanessance - Falconer (how did that get on there?) - Starsailor - The Chemical Brothers - Tears for Fears - Shakira - Westlife (errm..) - Joss Stone - Kate Nash - and that is just some of it; I haven't even mentioned the Christmas music that's on there. But that might be a wee bit too early after all.
Ok, this post turned out to be a lot longer than intended: lunch time!Labels: just stuff

Random pretty
I've not had time to prepare this week's interview, so I'll have to postpone it for a couple of days. Boo! Sorry, guys.
Tonight we're going to Tony's sister's house for fireworks night. I'm looking forward to that. It feels like I've done nothing but work lately, so it's going to be nice to interact with non-work people. ;-) Plus Tony has made orange double chocolate brownies, which I'm sure are going to be a hit.
I've been hand-stitching this wee quilt in my lunch breaks over the last couple of weeks. Very relaxing. And I'm totally making the pattern up as I go along. You can't really see how pretty the pink stitches are on the green fabric, but I'm really loving that combination. Yeah, that's a shocker, me liking pink and green!
Have a lovely weekend!Labels: just stuff, wip

Sea gull
A random picture from October last year and a random phone conversation with Tony:
Me: What are you doing?
Tony: Watching Star Wars - A New Hope
Me: What!? You're watching Star Wars without me?!!
Tony: Yes. It's on telly.
Me: Oh! Oh! You have to record it for me!!
Tony: *laughing* What!? You've got them all on dvd!
Me: Oh, hem... right..Labels: just stuff

If you're not smiling, you must be asleep!
I'm sorry that the next interview isn't up 'on schedule', but it's just been a bit busy here.
Yesterday we spent the morning and afternoon running around doing stuff and in the evening we went to Southend-on-Sea with Tony's parents and his nephew.
There's an amusement park there, and they also have fireworks on the Thames.
Tony and his dad had 'fun' going on the rides with Nephew - that kid isn't afraid of anything!
If it goes fast or round-and-round-and-round or up and down, he's loving it.
The rest of us maybe a little less. I've never liked amusement parks. Most rides make me feel sick just by looking at them!
But Nephew had fun and that is the important thing.
And it is quite inspiring, to see how fearless he is and he's only four!
I hope you had a nice weekend!Labels: family, just stuff

Gorilla on drums
English readers may have seen this already, but others probably haven't so I thought I'd share. It's rather strange and I'm not sure what exactly it's got to do with anything. But I guess since I'm posting it here, it has served its purpose and become some kind of viral marketing. Or something.
Have a happy weekend!

Just a couple...
...of things I made while off sick from work last week.
Not sure what I'm going to do with this yet. It is quite small, but not big enough for a cushion cover - and I don't think Tony would like the colour combo anyway. ;-)
I haven't made anything with Fimo in years! And I used to make loads when I was 10-12 years old. Although in retrospect most of it was pretty crap, but there you go...
Right now Tony is playing with the Wii and that is rather funny to listen to/watch. He gets very into it and yells at the "people" in the games (the Sports package that came with it). "Oh, you f****** muppet!" He he he! ;-)Labels: just stuff, quilt

Hello, hello, what's all this then?
If you're reading this in a feed reader, then that picture is probably the only hint that the blog has changed a wee bit. Not a lot, just the colours and some things have swapped places.
I needed a change, so I've been working on this for a while, because I couldn't make up my mind as to what I wanted! But now I'm finally happy with it. What do you think?Labels: just stuff

Blowing hither and thither
When I was a child, we called these* helicopters. We'd throw them up in the air and watch them spinning on their way down.
I'd love to go to the Knitting and Stitching Show, but I probably wont. innocent's Big Knit looks like fun. My mum loved the quapo I sent her. Best news this week is that my sister and her hubby will be spending Christmas in Denmark with the rest of the family. Today we got two postcards from my parents' holiday, one of them is a picture they took of the black bear they saw. These billboards are interesting. Tiny Choices is a nice blog. Eco-Chick is another nice read. The Concealed, Discovered, Revealed blog from the V&A is a very interesting blog, too.

IKEA & liquorice
We went to IKEA on Monday. Mainly so I could get the new catalogue. I don't know why, but I must have a proper catalogue to flick through. Maybe because it reminds me of Denmark, or atleast going to IKEA with my mum. We both love it (and so does my sister), in fact we are pretty much not allowed to go to IKEA without the other! ;-) In Denmark most households get the catalogue delivered automatically, but not so here. Or maybe we just live in the wrong area? Odd, really, considering that we live 5 minutes from the local one!
So I got my catalogue. And I can almost say that we didn't buy anything in IKEA; because Tony bought some french fries (which we cannot recommend, they are probably the most tasteless undercooked fries either of us has ever had. But what can you expect for 50p?). I got a lot more value for money with the bag of Malaco Salt Sill I got. Mmmm.. salty liquorice! The sweet English variety is nice, but proper liquorice has to be salty!Labels: just stuff

Mini Quapos
I finished this today - it doesn't have a name yet. The recipient will have to name it. I'm pretty sure it's a girl though!
A few more Quapos in progress. One of them with a blue face, something a little different!
My parents are back from their holiday; they had a great time with my sister and her hubby. They saw a geyser, deer, raccoons and a bear! And loads more, that they've yet to tell me about.
Tony had the day off today (and so did I), which was really nice. We did mostly boring stuff, but we did them together so it was all good.
I hope you had a lovely Monday too.Labels: just stuff, softies

Well, it is almost Talk Like a Pirate Day*
Today I saw a man with a hook in stead of his right hand.
My first thought was "hook... crochet hook... crochet prosthetics... imagine having a crochet hook instead of your hand."
Uhh... yeah...

The importance of doing nothing
Sometimes I feel like I have to create something whenever I'm not at work. Like on a Saturday like today. And some Saturdays I do make stuff. But it is a somewhat solitary thing to be doing as Tony can't take part, you know. So most Saturdays not much crafting takes place, apart from some crocheting or embroidering in front of the telly in the evening.
I used to get a bit stressed about this: "I have free time, I should make stuff!" But I've decided not to feel like that any more. Instead I'm going to be better at enjoying doing stuff with Tony. Even mundane things like doing the shopping, going to the library (ok, I don't really mind that. Hello craft books!) and even going to the gym.
Especially the last one is a wee bit tough. 'Wasting' an hour or so at the gym when I could be at home making something!? Hell no. But I want to look at it differently. I want to think of it as a time out of sorts. Where there aren't any distractions. Just time spent with my sweetie. I hope I can keep thinking like this! ;-)
Today we did exactly the things I've mentioned above. Had a bit of a lie in, then went shopping and to the library in the morning. Gym after lunch and then spent the rest of the afternoon reading in the books from the library. I rarely spend the majority of an afternoon just reading. Maybe I should do it more often. I like curling up with a book and losing myself in it for hours.
I hope you're having a nice weekend. I'm going back to my book now! :-)Labels: just stuff

Untitled Friday post
Thanks for the comments about the squares. :-) And I'll get that pattern typed up very soon, Lina. Maybe even next week!
Here's a couple of questions for ya:
What associations do you have when hearing the word Denmark?
What is your favourite flower?
I've gone and signed up for another swap. And I can just hear Tony groaning "not another one!". Oh yes. But it's swap with a bit of a difference. It's the scrap swap 2007. Which means I'll be getting rid of some of my fabric scraps - making things tidier! Of course, I will be getting some in return, but I plan on not letting them just sit in a carrier bag! ;-)
And now I think I'll go plop down on the sofa and read the new issue of Embroidery magazine which came in the mail today. Hooray for great mags!Labels: just stuff

Tillykke!
Today is Tony's birthday! And what else could I do for his birthday card than stamp on some daleks?! Cause he is Doctor Who obsessed (of course, when he reads this, he'll look at me and say "I'm not obsessed!" Nice try, honey, but you are!) and would happily watch it at all hours of the day. Except of course when he's not watching Star Trek or Star Gate or some such. ;-)
Happy birthday, my sweet Tony. x x x xLabels: just stuff

Day at the beach
Don't you just love deck chairs?! We went to the beach today! At Southend. It was an absolutely lovely, perfect day. Sun and not a cloud in the sky. We got there early, which was good, because around noon, the beach was pretty packed and parking would have been an absolute nightmare!
We brought our lunch, blanket, sunscreen and books etc to keep us entertained. When we weren't just looking at the other people. Some people just have no idea how they appear to other people. Yes, I'm talking to you, beer-gut-hanging-out-butt-crack-showing-guy. Yikes, whenever he bent over to pick up something...
The chavs were out in full force, complete with tarty girls with more gold jewellery than you can shake a stick at, masculine-looking women in 'Burberry' caps, drunk uncle trying to bribe nephew to behave. But the nephew just screamed. And honestly, did "I thought you was my best mate, but if you don't do like I say, I guess you're not" ever work on a three-year-old?!
Then there was the lone guy who had a bottle of vodka which he slowly mixed into an even smaller bottle of Sprite, occasionally leaving his towel to take a swim. Very strange.
We got sand in our shoes, had lemon ice cream, got a little sunburnt, which proves that, yes, places that aren't covered well in sunscreen will get burnt in the midday sun. All in all, a nice day out, almost like being on holiday!
Ha! As I was typing all this, Tony asked me: are you writing about Southend? (me: uh-huh) about butt-man? (yup). Then he laughed. ;-)Labels: just stuff

Not sure what that means, exactly. But I guess it's a fitting thing to post on Potter Eve, eh? Tony is the Potter fan, btw, not me. ;-)

I think it's some kind of law!
You must have risklatter (rice patties) the next day if you have leftovers of risengrød (rice porridge - see below). They are soooo good! Eaten hot off the pan with sugar (too much, in Tony's opinion). Oh. So. Good.
Do they make these in other countries besides Denmark? They are a winter food in Denmark, and maybe that's why I had the urge to have them yesterday; the weather is so grey and cloudy and rainy.
We go to Denmark in about a month and as you might guess, I can barely wait! And since summer here in England has been virtually a no-show this year, I'm hoping we can still catch a bit of sun and warmth in Denmark.
I miss summer. Right now I'm listening to Vanessa Carlton's album Be Not Nobody and it so reminds me of the summer of 2002... which is my memory was very warm and sunny and there are particular memories attached to that cd.
But mostly it just gives me this need to be in my parents' garden, walking barefoot in the grass, listening to the birds and the wind in the hedges.

Lars is Danish, actually
On a list of unlikely images on this blog, that one would be pretty high up! In case you don't know who that crazy looking chap is, it's Lars Ulrich, the drummer (stating the obvious, I suppose) of Metallica.
The reason for it being there is that Tony is at a Metallica concert in London this evening, and I'm home alone. That is so weird! Usually he picks me up from work and we go home to have food together. But it's all good.
I just spoke to him and it sounds like he's having a really good time. I'm so happy!! He wasn't going to go, but I kinda twisted his arm talked sense into him "you love Metallica, and when are you going to get the chance to see them again?! so you're going already!" I think he's happy he did.
And if he's happy, I'm happy. :-)Labels: just stuff

He's my hero
Oy, we've had some pretty spectacular weather here today. There's nothing like the crazy clouds of a brewing thunderstorm. I really like thunder and lightning, but Tony doesn't. Oh no, not at all. But he's my hero still, 'cause this evening he got rid of a REALLY BIG yucky spider, although he's not keen on spiders either.
We've not had internet connection for the past two days because we've just changed provider and had to wait for our new modem to come through. Which I picked up at the post office this morning. Tony told me that we also had to wait for them to tell us when our connection was activated from. Otherwise I would have installed the new modem this morning. Of course, later he realised that we had had a letter with the activation date (yesterday). Men, eh? ;-)
But we're up and running now (obviously, non?) and I have a few emails to catch up on (sorry!) and, as some will know, absolutely LOADS of unread feeds in Bloglines!
The no internet thing has been good though, today I've had a really lazy day. I do feel a little bad about not getting any crafting done on my day off, but I feel pretty good about watching episodes from season six of Gilmore Girls - which haven't been shown here in the UK yet, but Tony got it for me. He's my hero, did I already say that? ;-)Labels: just stuff

Is it Saturday yet?!
A little embroidered thing I've been working on the last couple of evenings. Not sure what I'll use it for yet. But that's ok. Sometimes you just need some little thing to keep your hands busy without having to think too much about it. It reminds me a bit of a Monet painting...
I made a card for the birthday of a lady I know in Denmark. I sent it this afternoon, but since Royal Mail will be on a strike tomorrow, I suspect it might not make it to Denmark in time for her birthday on Saturday!!
This is the inside of the card; I thought it was funny how the glue made 'holes' in the card - it looks a bit like the cheese the moon is made from! ;-)
Hard work at work at the moment, because of the re-fit. Oi, so much moving stuff about and packing in boxes and such. I can't wait for Saturday!Labels: embroidery, just stuff

I dare you to show yours
I like it when things are nice and tidy and all pretty looking. It never lasts long with me. Which should be fairly obvious from this photo. If it wasn't for Tony I think I'd be living in one of those homes of horror, with stacks of newspapers and empty milk bottles, piles of fabric of mountains of this-will-be-useful-one-day stuff.
Okay, maybe not that bad. But still, he is a saint for putting up with me. Of course, I firmly believe that a bit of mess is good for the creative juices! ;-)
Really, I best get some tidying done. If only I wasn't so knackered! The air conditioning at work isn't working, and hasn't been for several days now. Which makes it very, very hot and the air is completely stagnant. Yuck. So if you are in the neighbourhood with intentions on going to Woolworths at the Lakeside Shopping Centre, don't.
Unless you like the heat, of course. But you don't have to comment on the fact that it's hot. We already know, and we're getting kinda fed up with people saying "cor, it's hot in here!". Really, now? We hadn't even noticed. Imagine me rolling my eyes as I'm typing this. ;-)Labels: just stuff

Cards with a punch
Have you ever seen such a cheesy title? These are a couple of cards I made recently. The red one is for Tony's mum and the other one was for one of my colleagues. I really like both of them, but especially the red one.
And it only looks like this by accident! I had punched too close to the edge on one of the red squares, so I had to hide it somehow, and that's where the idea to put the flowers and leaves on top of the squares. And beyond. Don't be so square...
Have I mentioned how much I love my paper punches? They are paddle punches, so you need a hammer. That is strangely satisfying. Noisy, but satisfying. And they cut through felt, fabric and card without any problems. Fab-tas-tic, I say!Labels: just stuff

Dreaming of brighter days
Can't take any pictures today, 'cause the weather is absolutely horrible: rain, rain, rain and more rain. Although it is interspersed with sunshine, it is too unreliable! So the wee crochet projects I've made in the last couple of days will have to wait.
Instead you get a picture from July last year. What you see is a part of Djursland (a part of Denmark). I took it just as the plane was coming down to land at Århus Airport. I'd like to be there right now...
I like being able to look out from the plane, so I'm always very adamant that I get a window seat. It's interesting to look at the world from above. I think you can learn a lot of things about a country by looking at it from a distance like that. Or at least imagine that you can read the landscape. Or something!Labels: denmark, just stuff

Things that are nice
Getting two new Japanese craft books.
Realising once again that you really can find anything you need on eBay.
Tony wearing a (not OTT, but still!) flowery shirt, which he picked himself.
Wearing my favourite dress.
Drinking a little bit of red wine.
Eating yummy chocolate cake.
Making a decision.
Not working on a bank holiday.
Snuggling with my sweetie before getting out of bed.
Staying in bed 'till nine o'clock!
Lounging indoors watching films.
Going for a walk in the rain and wind. Brisk!
Seeing that at least one of my croffiti tags is still there.
Having dinner (roast) which I didn't make.
Drinking chocolate milk.
Continue work on my ripple blanket.
Starting another ripple blanket!Labels: just stuff

Konichiwa Bitches
I heard this song on Danish radio the other day and ever since I can't stop humming the... chorus. Well, it's the two words of the title: Konichiwa Bitches (by Swedish artist Robyn). And the video is quite fun and weird too. Perfect for a Friday evening when you're too tired to do a proper post... ;-)Labels: just stuff
