Dotty and wonky

Look! Oh look! My mum just sent me this photo - it is yardage of my design WonkyDots printed by Spoonflower. Now that is exciting! I still only have a small swatch of it. I can't wait to see this in person. My mum will be making some cushion covers for the sofa in their living room. :-)

Goodies for us

Look what I finally* received yesterday! Our advent calendar from my parents. Yay! Can't wait to see what is in the parcels - my mum puts a lot of effort into it every year and I Really Appreciate That! And now that it has become a tradition, I can't imagine December over here without this missive from home...

*Finally not due to any tardiness on my mum's behalf, but because of Royal Mail's uselessness. My mum sent the parcel on Nov 10 and when it still had not arrived earlier this week, we decided to look into it. Luckily my mum had bought 'track and trace' for it, so we could check its whereabouts online. Apparently Royal Mail had tried to deliver it - according to the online information, but noone had been here on the day in question (I know, because I am a job-less bum who sits at home in my jammies all day ;-) ). And even if they had been here, they hadn't left a 'sorry you were out' card.

Really not impressed with Royal Mail- oh well, I got my parcel now, so December is safe. :-)

Grandma's lace

This is the first of a few posts to show of some beautiful things made by my (paternal) grandma. I think I have mentioned her here before. I don't think there was a textile or yarn craft she couldn't do. Knitting, embroidery, sewing, crochet, rug hooking, needlepoint.. you name it. She used to teach classes and she and my grandad even had a yarn shop!

I am not sure exactly when she took up bobbin lace making, must have been at some point in the late 1980s, as she was almost 70 when she took up this craft. It's never (ever, ever!) too late to learn something new!

When my grandad passed away this spring, I asked if I could have the pieces of lace that were still in his flat (he had moved to a smaller place a few years ago, a little after my grandma passed away). So now I am the very proud owner of this and another example of my grandma's bobbin lace work. I hope one day to have a way to properly display them.

I really wish I had been into craft when my grandma was a live. Or rather, had appreciated it enough to take a proper interest in it. Because I wish she could have taught me to do bobbin lace. But I guess it's never too late to learn!

This is a fairly large piece, 40-50 cm long, so it must have taken a fairly long time to make. I still remember grandma sitting at the window, overlooking the street, while working with her lace pillow and bobbins.

I hope you enjoy these pictures.. :-)

Pencil case with Little Red

Well, since my sister's birthday has passed I can show you this. Ta-Da! It's a pencil case. With my Red Ridinghood gocco print. My sister studies to become...uhh.. I'm actually not quite sure, but it's something with animals. Vet, lion tamer... anyway, I didn't even know that she needed a pencil case, but she did. She told me when she got the present. Previously, she's been using a chocolate box. A timely present, then, eh? Yes, my family is a bit strange. ;-)

The lining fabric was actually a present from my sister, a couple of years ago. Isn't it nice when things come together like that?

I may make a couple of similar cases for the shop... although, really it would be nicer to make them to order, feels more personal. You know?

Fabric + happy beginning

I was going to end this post by saying something along the lines of "well, this is all nice and stuff, but since I haven't got a working sewing machine, all this lovely fabric will just sit there for goodness knows how long."

BUT! I don't have to end this post like that. No! Because the sewing machine is fixed. I fixed it! Me! I had a theory on what was wrong with it, so I took the mechanics, surounding the bobbin, apart to see if my theory was right: that when the needle came loose and fell down there, it somehow nicked into the metal.

That theory was wrong, because there was no damage to be seen on any of the parts. But after I put everything back together the machine is working again! So maybe the parts were just knocked slightly out of alignment and that is why the needle kept catching on something. In any case, it's working now. I fixed it! I am soooo happy! Not least because it saved a visit with the sewing machine doctor!

Anyway, after this happy news, let's look at some happy fabric!

I bought these (and a couple of solids, but no picture of them because that's not as interesting) in Denmark. In Stof & Stil, for anyone who is interested. I am wondering if I should get my mum to get some more of the black one because I think it might be cute as a skirt. What do you reckon? A bit over the top?

The other one is pretty cute, I think. For a bit of Christmas sewing. Not sure what, though. But I am sure some kind of inspiration will hit me at some point. And it was just too cute to not take home a little bit of it. :-)

These are from another Danish shop, called Malika & Rosa. I needed some cute fabric for my mum's birthday present. Actually, the fabric is the present, she will make it into an apron, pot holders and other kitchen-y textile items. So she got something pretty that also provides an excuse for doing some sewing. Not that she needs one! ;-)

Anyway, my mum got some of the teal coloured one on the left - I ordered a little bit extra so I could have some too. And the other two somehow fell into my virtual shopping basket as well. Strange how that happens, eh? ;-)

These two were also waiting for me in Denmark - a complete surprise from my sweet mum. She totally spoils me. Aren't they fun? They are also from Stof & Stil.

So. Now that my sewing machine is working again and I have all this lovely fabric to play with - where do I start?! ;-)

Where the view takes you

This is the view from my uncle's summer house. It is also his home when he is in Denmark. He lives most of the year in Greenland. The house is very close to where my mum's dad lives and I've spent a lot of time in this place. It is kind of boring, to be honest. But in a nice way. Because sometimes it is nice to get away from everything. And you definitely do when you are there. You have to make, or bring, your own entertainment. Or you can just sit and look at the view. Looking at the view is always good. Let time flow with the waves, taking your imagination with you...

A room for living

Just thought I'd show you a few pictures from of my parents' home. Their living room, to be more precise.

It's a nice, homey mix of 'old' furniture from my grandparents' home and newer ones. I am just realising that there's quite a lot of brown there, but it doesn't feel dark. I guess because the walls, floor and ceiling are all light coloured. And the big south facing windows probably help too!

Play with food

What do you do when you have a tomato that looks like this?

Well, naturally, you do like my parents: take one of your home grown cucumbers, cut it into bits and make a face. What else could you do?

Black and white cake

We made this cake last weekend for Nephew's after-birthday party on Sunday. It's a lemon drizzle cake, the same we had for our wedding. My part of the actual cake baking was grating and squeezing lemons. But after it had been iced, that's when I got to have some real fun. With icing sugar and BLACK food colour. Awesome. And it really was black.

The picture you see here is at the point when Tony thought that was plenty of decorating. But I still had plenty of icing left and it'd be a shame to waste it! Right?! So I added a bit more to the border. I mean, I had to, right?!

We both really like watching Ace of Cakes and maybe we are secretly wishing we could have that job... ;-)

Happy birthday

Is it your birthday today? Happy birthday to you! This is a banner/bunting I made (for a special person's sepcial birthday) a little while ago - and took a picture of in my parent's garden. Nice, huh?

I am thinking we need a bday bunting like this too - to hang whenever we have a birthday. Nice tradition, no? And sure beats those tacky plastic happy birthday streamers that people hang on their front doors here. I find that incredibly weird...

We're off to celebrate Tony's dad's birthday this afternoon. Barbeque at Tony's sister's. Should be a very nice day tomorrow with sun and stuff. And we won't be here in our warm flat, huzzah!

Hope you have a lovely day!

Home and back again

Hey, we're back from Denmark. We had a nice time, celebrating my birthday with friends and my parents. Went on an outing with my parents and my dad bought a bright green old car. Craziness! And I got a crazy amount of yarn. But more about all that later - haven't got any pictures of the yarn!

We are (unfortunately) going back to Denmark on Wednesday to take part in my grandad's funeral. He passed away last night, with the family around him. He had his 91th birthday in early April and was doing fairly well, apart from going through dialysis treatment a few times a week (for the past 11 years), until he had a fall about a week ago. I am glad that we were in Denmark so I could say goodbye to him - although he wasn't able to respond and probably wasn't too aware what was going on around him. But he is at peace now, and we are thankful for that and for the fact that it was not a long drawn-out period of time for him. Rest in peace, farfar.

I will try and get through some of my emails before Wednesday, but I think you will understand if replies are a bit slow. :-)

Freaky cage girl

My sister. Lives in a cage. Nutty.

Also: I totally stole that picture from her blog. But atleast I've blurred her face to protect her identity. Don't want people to point at her in the street and go "Freaky Cage Girl!", now do we? ;-)

Flowers for Mormor

I don't know if this is of interest to anyone else but me, but this is where my bouquet from the wedding ended up; on my (maternal) grandma's grave. She died when I was only 11 years old, so I was too young to really know her. I am their first grandchild so, according to my mum, I was a bit special to my grandma. She was special to me too and I so, so wish I could have got to know her better. So many things in life are meant to be shared with your grandmother. Not least your wedding...

I never had any doubt what to do with my bouquet after the wedding.

We're back!

We've seen a loooot of veeeeery old stuff in the last few days. But we're pretty tired, so telling you all about it has to wait. Of course, we brought our 'kids' Mr Zmeggy and Løvemand (Mr Lion) with us. Here they are posing in front of Stonehenge. Løvemand is wearing an eye patch because his eye was chewed off by my family's dog years ago. Poor thing. ;-)

This cake is the culmination of a birthday celebration which was under way for some seven months! Tony is 30 on Sunday, but his family will be away, so we celebrated it last Saturday, so my parents were here too. I've had sooo many secrets with Tony's mum & dad to make this all come together to surprise Tony. But it was ALL worth it! He suspected nothing, so he really, really was surprised when he walked in and there was a bunch of aunts, uncles and cousins.

And the Doctor Who cake which I baked, then his parents came and picked it up so Tony wouldn't know. The icing topper (with the image) I ordered off eBay and it arrived just in time. Phew! I'd never heard of such a thing before. Pretty cool, I think!

Holiday hiatus + Journal Project

My parents are arriving tomorrow, they are staying until Wednesday. Yay! We're going down to Salisbury and Stonehenge - my first proper holiday in England! Unless you count the week Tony and I spent in Scotland 4 (!) years ago... ;-)

So I won't be around until some time next week. Hopefully, I'll have lots of interesting photos to share (not just of a pile of old stones!).

In the meantime, if you're taking part in the Travelling Journal Project (you can still join!), please send me your postal address. I'll send it out once we're back.

Right, that's it for me for a few days. :-)

Ben 10 cake, man!

Everyone survived the birthday party! Ok, it wasn't that crazy. Just a bit, er, LOUD! They had hired a chap to entertain the kiddies and he was quite good. Magic tricks, balloon animals, little prezzies for all the kids, and just general goofing around. And of course cake.

I ended up taking quite a few pictures (because how can you only take a couple?) of the goings on. Fun! Never mind wedding photography, kids have the best parties; I'd love to be a kiddie party photographer! Now if only I had a decent camera. ;-)

Of course, these pictures aren't great representational stuff by any means. However, I do like this kind of stuff. And perhaps they are more like a party than anything sharp and in focus? Plus they protect the identity of the wee ones. Can't be too careful, yanno.

For my sister

Maaaany years ago, my sister bought this cd, and I borrowed it and fell in love with it. It is a rather quirky cd, full of interesting combinations of sound. Think Beck, but different. Er.

Well, in the last few years it seems to have gone walkabouts. Which is a real shame, being the really, really great cd that it is. So the other day I decided that, dagnammit, I'm going to buy it so I can listen to it again.

I got it off eBay for £3. Not bad, eh? Great music to listen to while I send some thoughts over to my sister (hej H!) in California.

The artist, by the way, is Imani Coppola and the cd is called Chupacabra. You can see the video for the best know song from the album over on Youtube, it's called Legend of a Cowgirl.

I'm spoiled

This is what was the box from my sister. Just look at those pretty colours!

Rip paper, rip paper and what do you see? An issue of Cloth Paper Scissor, some foam stamp thingies which look very interesting (it's a bit hard to take a picture of, sorry), some pretty fabric, which I would never have picked, but absolutely love (this is what sister are for, right? knowing what we like even when we don't ourselves), some crochet hooks and a very short jacket type garment (that's the red, white and gold thing on the right). There was also 3 issues of Adorn in the parcel, but I actually paid for those myself, so that's not really a present, heh.

And then there was this beauty. I also bought this myself, but had it sent to my sister because having it sent to England would have cost me a fortune. Those are Star Wars stamps in case you hadn't guessed. I bought them last year; they celebrate 30 years of SW. Weeee!

Won't be getting to those emails tonight either. I'm going to have an early night, because today at work I was completely in a world of my own because I was so tired! Pathetic. ;-)

Birthday with cake

I spent a couple of evenings filling a piece of card with flowers.

And then I cut it into tags. An idea with potential, I think, but way too labour intensive. But maybe a hand-coloured gocco'ed version? Is gocco ink water resistant?

Oh and can you guess what this is for? Apart from a pretty bad photo... ;-)

We spent a nice, nice afternoon with Tony's family. I took loads of pictures of the Nephew and Niece, but I'm not letting those loose in the world unsupervised. I think, though, that you can gather from this photo what a cutie-pie the Niece is?

I almost forgot to show you this. Tony made this. He's becoming quite the cake maker. I'm very proud of him. But you knew that. Right?

It's a Sacher Torte and it's very, very rich. Tony made up the icing himself. Did I mention that I'm proud of him? I got some really nice books as presents, I'll show you those some other time. This post is already long enough and now I want to go read those books!

Earlier incarnations

Me in the 70's and 80's.
Hockneyized fun with me in the 70's and 80's.

Me with my little sister. I don't wear overalls any more, but she still looks just as goofy. ;-)

My parents sent me this picture this morning. They put up the flag for me. Even though I'm not there! My parents rock. :-) Now we're off to Tony's parents' for a birthday BBQ. Because you see, the weather is lovely today, it is my birthday after all.

Lunch + bad me

This was my lunch today. That thing on the slice of bread is called pålægschokolade (literally: put-on chocolate). It is a thin slice of milk or dark chocolate that you, well, put on bread. To my knowledge this isn't eaten anywhere else but in Denmark. Oh my, the culinary contribution of Denmark is astounding. But really, this is sooo yummy. And it's particularly good on rye bread.

Speaking of Denmark. I'm a bad, bad granddaughter, I forgot my granddad's birthday (yesterday) - and he even turned 90! Not good at all. And we also forgot to send a birthday card to my brother-in-law (for tomorrow). We're really doing well with the birthdays...

My birthday has come early?

A present has, anyway (aaaaall the way from Japan!). Man, I've wanted a Gocco ever since I first heard of them. Now I've got one. I can't wait to play with it. But should I wait till after my actual birthday?

Sorry to go quiet on you for the last almost-a-week, but my mum's been here and we've been to London and stuff! More about that later, right now I'm off to investigate how you use a Gocco. ;-)

Heart old enough?

I'm going to wear this small gold heart for the wedding. You might just be able to tell that it has my name on it. I thought it would be nice to wear since it was a christening gift from my mum's parents, and since they won't be at the wedding (grandma died 20 years ago and granddad is too ill to travel) it would sort of represent them. But is it old enough (32 years) to count as my 'something old'?

Runaway penguin tee

Of course, I forgot to take pictures of this before it flew out of my hands. Typical. Good job my mum is handy with a camera then! I made this t-shirt for my sister for Christmas. She liked it. Yay! What you probably can't tell is that the single penguin on the front is saying 'hej' which means 'hi'.

A question about beans

This is our advent calendar - from my parents! Aren't they sweet to send us a box of goodies like that? We don't have a fancy display to put the little parcels on, but I kinda prefer it this way. I like having to rummage through the box to find the next one. :-)

And I don't think it matters how old you are - and advent calendar is always pretty cool and very exciting. Don't you?! Daily anticipation + a surprise = a good thing.

*** ***

Tell me something: is 1.8 kilo of jelly beans slightly excessive? It's only £13 incl. postage...

Happy December!

The advent candles - to be lit on each of the four Sundays before Christmas. But we cheated today because Tony's family came for an afternoon of Christmas-ness.

I love the smell of oranges and cloves = Christmas!

Danish and English combination on the tree = Snowman baubles (which Tony bought last year) and garlands of Danish flags.

The tree and marzipan ready for making sweets. Nephew could barely wait to get started making the sweets. Everyone else was having lunch and he kept saying "can we make the sweeties now?" "I can make it myself". He he, funny stuff.

Marzipan sweets. Everyone had a go at making some. Yay! And when they left, Tony's parents said "see you same time next year*", which means that now we have a bona fide tradition! Yipee!!

*we will see each other before then, obviously. ;-)

Changes

I'm feeling thoughtful tonight. This picture is taken in my morfar's (my mum's dad) bedroom a couple of years ago. Or, I should say former bedroom... Today my parents have helped him move to his new 'digs' in a retirement flat - or whatever you want to call it: he has his own bedroom and kitchen etc, but there's staff on hand to help. And he does need help these days. He used to be doing fine, but in the last year he's not been well at all. He needs to be somewhere where there's help close by.

It must be strange for him, though. He's lived in his house for probably sixty years, so this must be quite a change for him. He's always taken care of himself and his family (four kids). When my mormor died 20 years ago, he had to learn a whole lot of new things like using the washing machine, cooking and all those things. And he took care of it all. It's only in the last couple of years that things have become hard for him to do.

Of course it will be quite a change for the rest of us. My mum and her brothers will no longer be able to visit him in their childhood home ( it is to be sold), nor will we, the grandchildren, visit the house where we've spent countless holidays. I do hope I'll be able to go see the house one more time before it is sold.

I hope morfar will be ok and settle in his new home. It will be an easier life for him and by now (he's 92) he definitely deserves that. My other grandfather lives in a similar sort of place and he seems quite content with it.

If you're not smiling, you must be asleep!

I'm sorry that the next interview isn't up 'on schedule', but it's just been a bit busy here.

Yesterday we spent the morning and afternoon running around doing stuff and in the evening we went to Southend-on-Sea with Tony's parents and his nephew.

There's an amusement park there, and they also have fireworks on the Thames.

Tony and his dad had 'fun' going on the rides with Nephew - that kid isn't afraid of anything!

If it goes fast or round-and-round-and-round or up and down, he's loving it.

The rest of us maybe a little less. I've never liked amusement parks. Most rides make me feel sick just by looking at them!

But Nephew had fun and that is the important thing.

And it is quite inspiring, to see how fearless he is and he's only four!

I hope you had a nice weekend!

For you...

I'm using this picture as a wallpaper on my computer; I thought you might like it too. Just click on it to go to the large version (1024x768 px - if you'd like an even larger version, I'll be happy to make one). Those are asters. I never realised that I liked them before. But I do.

Tony is watching Superman on telly and I (like the geek I am) am keeping an eye on the last leg of my parents' flight home from the US. I must admit, I don't much like trans-atlantic flights. All that water, for so long. I shall be glad when they are back home. So I can call them - I've not spoken to my mum in two weeks! ;-) I hope they've had a splendid holiday visiting my sister. I wish I could go visit her... but that wont happen for some time, unfortunately!

Finally! The birdie t-shirt!

I made this for my sister's birthday, and gave it to my parents to take with them when they went to the US. Which conveniently coincided with her birthday (Friday). So now she has it, and I can show it off.

I'm not a huge fan of yellow, but for some reason it just had to be that colour for my sister. Maybe because she lives in California, so she must have a tan which goes well with that colour! ;-)

This little fella is placed in the back and easily overlooked! Especially if you're in a hurry to put on your new t-shirt, which she was - I'm so happy she liked it. Yay!

A long post about old stuff and memories

Pretty vintage needle book

Collection of crochet hooks

My mum's aunt died a short while ago, and my mum was invited to go see if there were any of her things she wanted. One of the things my mum brought home was a wooden chest which her uncle had hand-carved. Inside it was a multitude of crafty things. Lots of knitting needles, sewing threads (unfortunately, mum's aunt was a heavy smoker, so those were useless), buttons and crochet hooks. Which I nabbed of course, what with my new-found love of crocheting! And although I didn't know my mum's aunt that well, it is nice to think that I'm using her crochet needles now.
Sewing ephemera

The things in the above picture are interesting, I think. The big wood thing is a snoregaffel ('string fork') which is used to make... well, string with. I haven't quite figured out how to do this, the instructions are a bit vague. But apparently, the use of this was widespread in the old days, and a Danish princess made a similar tool while she was in prison, so I think it's kinda fun to make something the same way as one of my favourites of Danish history. Once I learn to do it, anyway. ;-)

The metal thing in the middle is a 'gimpenål' used for crocheting. I don't know the word for it in English, but the Danish word is "gimpning" or hairpin crocheting (maybe this is the English word for it?), because in the old days people would use hairpins to do this. The result is a crocheted 'ribbon' in the middle with long loops on both sides, the length of the loops depending on the width of the gimpenål.

I like getting to know more of these old techniques; it makes me feel connected to the women in my family. Both the ones I've known and the ones I haven't. It annoys me a bit that there are so many books out there with the title along the lines of "not your grandma's [insert craft here]". But it IS their craft! We're all the same, we just make different things and (sometimes) for different reasons. But there really is no difference. And I have no doubt that the next generations of crafters will think that what we're doing is hopelessly aged and boring.

My paternal grandma (farmor) was one heck of a crafty lady. I don't think there's a craft she hadn't tried and mastered (at least to some degree!). I just regret that I wasn't into it when she was still alive. I did do some things with her, but I was very young then and probably didn't appreciate it that much. I do remember making a pincushion for my mum with her help. I cross stitched it and farmor put it together. My mum still has that pincusion!

Actually, I think farmor deserves a whole post to herself. But not now, cause now I want to get back to my ripple blanket! Which I've blogged about on the Ripple Along community blog (there are some seriously awesome ripples going on over there!), I'll do a post about it here soon.

They have yarn too!!

My mum and I went to London on Saturday to look at shops and such. We started off by going to Marylebone High Street, which has lots of nice shops. Of course, I had to take my mum to the Cath Kidston shop there and she was in love with it too! Then we just had a wander, and popped into Skandium which has Scandinavian design - it's always so amazing to me to see Danish stuff in shops in other countries, I really get a kick out of it. In Skandium we also saw this guy who is on telly here in the UK, but I can't rememeber his name or what programme he does. But it's something with design and decorating (yeah, I know, not a lot to chose from then!).

Then we had hot chocolate with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkled on top at Starbucks. So good! After that we walked over to Regent Street where I wanted to have a look in Liberty. Oh golly, people! It's like a paradise of fabric and yarn (nevermind all the other things too!). In fact, when we stepped out of the lift on the 3rd floor (fabric), I did actually exclaim: They have yarn too!! Because that was what met my eyes. Lots and lots of yarn, for knitting, crocheting and embroidery. And bolts and bolts of lovely, pretty fabric. All so very tempting, but you know what... I actually managed to leave without buying anything!

I absolutely would not have minded staying there for quite some time, but eventually we left and braved the throngs in Oxford Street. Bloody hell, there are a lot of tourists there! It got better as soon as we turned onto Tottenham Court Road where we went into Paperchase. Which is another fantastic shop. And if you like the stationary and such they have on the ground floor, you should go to the top floor. They have beautiful, beautiful paper of all kinds. Crepe and tissue paper. Printed paper, embossed, flocked(!) and handmade paper. Almost too much to stand!

A really lovely day. It was so nice to have my mum here for a few days. To go (window) shopping, chat and all that stuff you can't do over the phone or in an email. Unfortunately, now she's gone home, and it'll probably be a while before she comes over here again. At least we're going to Denmark in a little over two weeks. Yay!

What a lovely couple!

I felt it was my duty to share this picture of my parents with the world. Aren't they lovely? They went to a 50th birthday/fancy dress party this weekend and this is what they looked like. My mum is no particular lady with a sloppy attitude to her hair and my dad's costume is inspired by a character from a series of Danish films about the "Olsen Gang" - Danish readers may be able to tell which one?? The short trousers should be a dead give-away!

In other news, last night I was working on some Easter-y cuteness to go in my Etsy shop soon. I can't tell you how good it feels to get some crafting done again - the past week there hasn't been much of that going on here, as you know. So, if you like bunnies, stay tuned!
