Some changes

I have moved the blog, so this will be the last post at this particular URL. From now on, you can find me just a simple shuffle step to the left, at carinascraftblog.wardi.dk. If you are reading this in a feed reader, such as Google Reader (which is the best!), simply add the link above to subscribe to the new feed and your reader should be able to find the feed. If it doesn't, try using this link.

If you are so kind (thank you so much!) to link to my blog, you may also want to point the link in the direction of the new URL for the blog. carinascraftblog.wardi.dk It is a bit easier to remember as well, isn't it?

Goodness me, it's taken a few hours to sort it all out - tinkering deep within the bowels of my webdomain, or atleast well beneath the skin! I've been wanting to do this for ages and I finally figured out how to do what needed to be done. And now it's good to go; although there are still some cosmetic 'issues' to sort out. But that shouldn't effect the reading experience. All the old posts have also been imported to the new blog so everything stays together - and they are staying here as well. So if you are linking to a particular post, the link will not become invalid.

As I said, I've been wanting to move the blog for a while, but I was finally prompted to do it because the commenting system I'm using, Haloscan, will be discontinued in a couple of weeks. So from December 26 it will no longer be possible to leave comments on this (now old) version of the blog. But you are of course more than welcome to comment on the new blog! :-)

Finally, if you need to send me an email about something on the blog, please use the following address in future: carinascraftblog AT googlemail DOT com. Of course, if you use the old one, I will still get your message! I'm just trying to make things a bit simpler. At least I hope I've made them simpler! ;-)

Hope to see you 'next door'!

Hey lady, where is my comment?!

Hey, this is just a wee 'house keeping' post. About comments.

I really appreciate when anyone takes the time to stop and leave a comment and I wish I had time to contact each and everyone of you to tell you in person.

But:

Please don't leave anonymous comments. It's like leaving messages on the voice mail of random strangers. It's a bit weird and can't be taken seriously, so people would delete those, right?

As do I. Regardless of whether your comment is positive or negative (although that's a completely different kettle of fish). If there's no email or name (or link to blog/website) I simply won't hit 'approve' on your comment.

The blog idea only works when there's some kind of connectivity going on. I like to visit the blogs of the people who stop by and leave comments, or email them if they have no blog. But if there is no way of knowing who you are that just makes me a little sad.

Other reasons your comment doesn't show up:

Your comment may be related to the post you are commenting on, but if it's not 'on topic' or relevant I might not approve it.

If it is negative for the sake of being negative. If you comment just to say that I suck, or another commenter sucks, well, I won't approve that. However, you are welcome to disagree with me (and others), if you can express it in a respectful manner.

It should go without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that comments that are racist or otherwise 'hating on' other people, for whatever reason, are a big N-O-NO.

I am paying the bills here, so I get to make the rules. ;-)

Thank you for understanding.

Delay + apology

Hey you guys, we're really enjoying our holiday, yay! But unfortunately that means that I've not really been near the computer. So the book + pattern winners announcement has been delayed because I haven't yet had time to pick those winners. I am sorry about that!

We have nothing planned for tomorrow, so I am hoping to get it done then.

Thank your for your patience - and for all your great comments! :-)

The final 9 reasons your blog is annoying

The final post in the small series I like to call 'why your blog sucks'. Of course, your blog doesn't suck. Someone else's blog, obviously. ;-)

Oh I guess I better spell this out: although I do stand by each of these points, they are also mostly meant to be humorous. I ain't out to get anyone or poke fun of anyone or their blog. All blogs are different and so some things work on one that don't work on another. I do not claim to be the know it all of what a blog should be like - these are simply some of my bloggy pet peeves.

19. Oh yeah, do you think rAnDOm CapItaLIsAtiOn looks cute? Or fun? Or creative? Guess what? It's not. It makes you look like a fool. Sorry, but it does.

20. Please use punctuation. A large chunk of text with no visual pauses where you can "catch your breath" are really annoying to read and you shouldn't just use punctuation because your teacher told you to but also because it was invented for a reason and that reason is that when you use punctuation you don't sound like a blabbering idiot who just goes on and on without any thought for how what you are trying to communicate is coming across to the poor people who are reading it and trying to make heads or tail of what it is you are actually trying to tell them and they are getting completely exhausted by now because there hasn't been a single comma semi-colon or even a humble period to relieve them in their reading. Punctuation = friend.

21. Try to use some grammar. It doesn't have to be perfect, but do try to make an effort. Your readers will appreciate it.

22. Continually misspelling words like, 'your, you're', 'its, it's' or 'there, they're, their' is really annoying. Sure, we all slip up from time to time, but do try and make that extra tiny effort.

23. Reading through your text before hitting the post button can help you catch these little annoying things. You do proof read your writing, right? ;-)

24. Humans are visual creatures, so if you've got a lot of text, please try and break it up with a picture from time to time. You know what they say about a picture being worth a thousand words, right?

25. Although, some pictures should be used in moderation. Yes, your pets and kids are Adorable, but unless I know them personally, my interest fizzles out after about 2 or 3. Share the excess with people who know and love your kids/pets. Or atleast make it relevant to me. Posts that consist solely of pictures of your cat are a complete turn off.

26. Speaking of pictures of your kids. There are creepy characters freely roaming the internets who will look at that cute picture of your kid in a diaper in a less than innocent way. And it is actually quite easy to find someone's address online. Even if you haven't written it on your blog or website. If you own your domain name, this kind of information isn't that hard to come by. So, sure, have pictures of your kids, but don't use their real names (ever) and you really shouldn't show their faces either.

27. I read way more blogs than is actually reasonable so to do that I use a feed reader. And guess what? If your blog doesn't have a feed, or one that only feeds me a tiny paragraph and no pictures, I can't keep up with it properly. And I am just too lazy to come visit your blog everyday to check for updates. ;-)

9 more reasons your blog or site is annoying

Here we go, following on from this post: 9 reasons I leave your blog or site without coming back .

Again, not out to get anyone or poking fingers. Just a wee bit of friendly advice to the world at large. ;-)

10. Don't use a background colour/image that is too overpowering, it makes everything disappear and, guess what, it hurts my eyes! Fluro green is not a good background colour!

11. Please make sure that people can distinguish links from the rest of the text. It may seem oldfashioned, but a simple underline is actually quite nice. It says 'link', very simply. And please don't use underlining for other parts of the text if it's not clear that it isn't a link.

12. Don't use blinking or scrolling or crawling text. Seriously, why would you?

13. Don't use text in different colours, please just stick with one, one that is easy to read. Paragraphs of text in all the colours of the rainbow may look pretty or creative to you, but it just makes it difficult to read.

14. Make sure that the colour of your text is actually readable against your background. Light grey on another light grey may look pretty and stylish, but, by Jove, it is difficult to read! Or red on black; damn near headache inducing!

15. Please don't use centre aligned text for larger amounts of text. People don't read like this normally. Left aligned is your friend. Do use centre aligned under an image, though, it underlines the image

16. Please use post titles so I get a rough idea of what I am about to read.

17. For the love of toast, if your writing looks like a 12 year old's text messages, why bother at all? Please, use punctuation and proper capitalisation!

18. Same goes for ALL BLOODY CAPS, it is like shouting with the written word. I don't like being shouted at, not in person and not when I'm reading. If you use ALL BLOODY CAPS I will automatically assume that you are a rude idiot and who wants to give them the time of day? Not me, that's for sure!

9 reasons I leave your blog or site without coming back

I've been meaning to post this for ages, but I just keep forgetting. And it's not exactly anything to do with crafting. However, it does have a lot to do with blogging and this is a blog and stuff, so I guess there's the link.

You may not agree with me on what I say below, and may be thinking "who does she think she is?" Well, I think I am someone with atleast a bit of common sense, that's who. Plus, I've been blogging for 6 years, visited more blogs and sites on any kind of subject than you can shake a stick at. Oh yeah, and my education is also in this very area, so I think I know just a wee tiny bit of what I'm talking about. ;-)

Please don't take this as personal criticism, I am not out to get anyone. I do hope that maybe it will be of help to you. Anyway, here we go. Oh yeah, this is the first in a series of 3 posts on this topic. Ye be warned.

1. Music that starts when the page loads and is either impossible to turn off or it's impossible to find the controls to turn off.

2. If your website resizes my browser window, I'm not even going to bother with you.

3. Does visiting your actual content requite opening another browser window? Honestly, I am usually working with an image program, vector program, a couple of folders, my browser and maybe even a music player - I don't need another window open, so I'm closing yours and not coming back.

4. Please don't have internal links on your site open in another window or browser tab. It is illogical, not neccessary and annoying.

5. If you've got lots of pop ups or pop unders, guess what? Bye bye.

6. Got a snazzy Flash intro that lasts half an hour? Good for you, but I really don't care. If you absolutely insist on having this, make sure it is clear how I can skip it. But really, just scrap it altogether

7. Oh yeah, in a similar vein, if your whole site is designed in Flash, I really can't be bothered with it. It slows down my browser. And it's like shooting yourself in the leg with a very pretty gun, because sites like Google can't search is properly. But then, maybe you are not interested in being searchable. I can't link directly to cool stuff on your site either so I can't spread the good word about you.

8. Using a multitude of banners and graphics on your site? Just don't - it hurts my eyes and I need them to view blogs that don't make my eyes feel like I've been staring into the sun for hours on end.

9. Don't make me scroll for half an hour to get to the actual content. Make sure there is something interesting 'above the fold' or I might miss it altogether.

Blogger/tech help!

Hey, are there any Blogger wizards out there? I am planning on moving my blog to the 'layout' version of Blogger very soon. But I just realised that it isn't as easy as I had thought. I have to do something with a CNAME and DNS and stuff. And I do get that, sort of, he he.

However, the help instructions on Blogger seem to assume that you are using blogspot to host your blog and now want to move your blog to your own domain. But my blog is already hosted on my own domain, so I am not sure what I am supposed to do. Is it the same procedure or what?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Imaginary popularity contest

(I was a bit on the fence whether to post this or not. I don't want to come across as whining; because I am not. I am just wondering why/if something like this has an effect on what I/we do... If that makes sense!?)

Look at that picture, see the number there where it says 'Crafty Blogs'? 90. It used to say 5. Or, atleast be in the 'top' ten of UK craft blogs (who have added their link to this thing). But in the past month or so, it has just gone down and down and down. Which is weird.

Not that I am particularly worried about numbers when it comes to my blogging - I only check my sitemeter stats to see where people come from and what links that lead them here. How many there are is not really that interesting to me.

I blog because I like it, because I can keep track of the things I make (and 'my peeps' back in Denmark can keep a track on me, haha!) and the things that interest me. If what I make and learn is of interest to others, well that is just a bonus. A much appreciated bonus! I am so grateful for the connections I have made through blogging. Awesome!

But then there's that number that keeps going down and down and down. And I am wondering what the heck is up with that? Is it something I did? Something I didn't do? WHY DOESN'T THE INTERNET LIKE ME ANYMORE!? ;-)

And that is just totally ridiculous. A fairly arbitrary number like that shouldn't have an effect on me and what I do. If I am writing my blog to be Popular, then I don't think I should be doing it at all. There isn't a lot of heart in trying to be popular. I am me, and I do this for me, first and foremost. I should really only worry about being popular with me.

Maybe I should just get rid of that button - it doesn't feel like it is contributing anything positive. And I know I am not the only one who has noted a significant change in their 'performance' according to it - so maybe it isn't doing its job properly? ;-)

What do you think? Do you sometimes fall prey to this imaginary popularity contest?

Ohh, er, a fancy title

Yoink! I have decided I want to use the Blogger comment thing instead of the Haloscan I'm currently using. But I just can't seem to get it to work. Any thoughts/ideas/able to help?

I was supposed to show you pictures of the blanket I posted a wee teaser of the other day, but I have been busy with organising and 'decorating' in the living room, so that (+ that commenting thing) has taken up most of my day. But, tomorrow, pictures of today's 'work' + that blanket...

Also... behind on email. Again. Hope that bowl of happy yarn sort of makes up for it. ;-)

You can't accuse ME of nepotism

So, Tony picked my sister's word: quirkdorkable, so I guess I have to send her something pretty now! But since I don't want you to think me guilty of nepotism, I have picked someone, at random, who I am not related to whom I will also send something pretty. And the random person is: Anonymous Jesse of Jezze blog. Expect something pretty in the near future! :-)

And wow! Can I just say thank you, thank you for all the comments, you guys are really quite awesome. Thank you. :-)

1,000 thanks!

Yeah, I can't believe it either! 1,000 posts! That's insane! And that's not even counting the drafts that never got anywhere. So, to celebrate the insanity I'm having a giveaway. Just a wee one (my current circumstances, as you know, do not allow for much postage spending, unfortunately!), but a pretty one, nonetheless. So if you would like a wee, pretty thing, please help me celebrate by leaving a comment.

Please remember to fill in the email bit, noone will see it but me, and I will need to contact you! Also, if you will humour me and pick one word that describes either me or the blog, that would be awesome. I could draw lots out of a hat, but I'm not gonna do that; I'll let Tony read the comments and the one word description that he thinks fits me/the blog best, will receive something pretty in the mail. Yes, sir. Ya got until midnight on Saturday.

And can I just say, thank you very much for stopping by. It makes it a bit less insane to have written 1,000 blog posts when there are actually people reading them! Although that is not the reason I write a blog. Nice to know I'm not just blabbering to myself! So thank you! :-)

Is my blog weird?

Hey, we're back from Denmark. Nice to be home, but also not so nice to not be in Denmark any longer.

Really, this is just a quick post to ask you all for a wee bit of help. When we were in Denmark I noticed that my blog seems to be stuck sometime in December (with this post, in fact). At first I thought it was just my parents' computer, but later i spoke to my sister and she said the same thing. Just now I checked it here on my own computer and it's the same!

Something WEIRD is going on! Three different computers, in three different countries and with three different browsers (ok, not completely sure what browser my sister is using.. forgot to ask.)

So, hopefully, this post will show up in your feed reader. If it does, would you mind popping over to the blog home page and take a look? And then leave a comment (or email me, binaryflower AT gmail DOT com) with the following information: is the blog up to date (i.e. last post is from January 17th); what browser are you using; what country you are in and what feed reader you are using. Hopefully, this can help me figure out what is going on.

And if you have an idea why my blog is being funny (for example if this has happened to you too) and what can be done, I would be most grateful!

Edit 18/1: thank you all very much for your feedback. It appears that removing a wee bit of code made it all better. Yes? All back to normal? If you still notice problems with the blog not being updated, please let me know. Thanks again! :-)

Feeling positively Cath Kidston-y

Like the new blog banner? I do. And I think I can actually live with it for more than a couple of days. He he.

I wasn't actually going for a Cath Kidston feel to this one - it just sort of happened. I guess I needed something to brighten the day. I've got a cold! And I never get a cold, so it's almost as bad as someone having a man cold! Hopefully, I'll be feeling better tomorrow. I was planning on getting a lot of ducks in a row this coming week. And being ill wasn't one of those ducks!
