Roos and Elektra

Roos

These are the softies I mentioned yesterday. I got this idea to make a softie that has a simple shape, but one which I can add all sorts of details to. Like ears. Although I think they should have ears, they would look funny otherwise...

Elektra

I think I'm going to make more of these. The basic shape is just a rectangle, but it could also be a square. The face part is made from linen and the lower body is a solid cotton. And then there's the aprons. Ack, I love little aprons! :-)

There are more pictures of them in my Softies set on Flickr.

Kamikaze Zakka Apron

Nevermind the model, it was the best I could get with such short notice. ;-) And sorry about the picture quality, but what can you do when you only have west facing windows, eh?

I don't know where the idea came from exactly, but I lay in bed one evening, unable to sleep, and the idea for this apron popped into my head. I call it the kamikaze apron because the simple idea turned out to be quite difficult to turn into reality!

The amount of seems I've had to rip; it's not even funny! But I persisted and I'm quite happy with the result. However, the tutorial I had planned on making for it... well, it will have to wait, because I'm not even sure myself how I managed to put it together in the end!

I am going to do a tutorial, though, so I can make another apron, without all the flaws of this one. Ha! However, as I understand it, flaws can be zakka, so I guess it's mission complete. This apron seemed simple enough, but it wasn't. I kinda like that. Difficult seems simple and simple seems difficult...

Anyway, the thing about this apron is that you're supposed to tie it at the front, so there are openings to pull the tie through. Why this is a good idea, I don't know. But that's ok. One half of the apron is a teatowel for drying your hands. It can be un-buttoned in the middle so it's twice the size. The other side of the apron is a large pocket made from linen.

The teatowel buttoned with a juniper button.

Top of the pocket. You may just be able to see the green leaves stitched at the edge.

A new towel apron

Towel apron

I made another of these aprons. It's a bit fancier than the one I made for myself. I love the colour combination: pink and stripes. Yum!

And I'm not even going to keep it: it's for sale! Let me know if you want it.

And now I'm off to watch the last two episodes of West Wing - dang I'm going to miss that show. *sob*

Bridge-building apron

A closer apron
Originally uploaded by wardi.

It's T's mum's birthday today and (because it was his dad's birthday last week and they got a share-present) we weren't going to give her a birthday present.

But I've been talking to my mum about how I can somehow get my "mum-in-law" to maybe appreciate all these crafty things I make. Cause she ain't used to people doing that kind of thing. And it'd just be nice if sometimes she would comment on things I make.

Not because I want her to ooh and ahh over everything I do... just... Just to get some kind of recognition: that she actually notices. That would mean a lot to me.

My mum suggested that I make something for her. And I was racking my brain to think of something for her - cause she's not the kind of person that wears lots of colourful jewelry or other things - but then it hit me: she wears aprons!

So an apron it had to be. And I think she liked it! Especially because she's quite petite, so she finds it difficult to find aprons that aren't too big. But this one should fit her pretty well. Although she didn't try it on - we were in a restaurant when she opened the present. ;-)

Perhaps a small bridge has been built between her world and my crafty world??

My first apron

Apron
Originally uploaded by wardi.

Well, most of the things I'm making at the moment are firsts...

Anyway, this is my first apron. And I'm mighty proud of it. Not only because it's a first and it turned out pretty good (heck, even my mum thought so!), but especially because it is the apron I've always wanted!

See, the bottom part is made from a towel. Which is great because it's very handy (pardon the pun) for drying my hands. The top part is made from an old quilt cover from IKEA. How great that one of the colours in that is almost the same as the towel!

I love the colours and the checkered pattern, it goves it sort of a retro or cottage-y feel.

I've actually been bugging my mum for ages to make an apron like this for me, but she never got round to it. Well, now I have my own sewing machine and can make these things myself...
