Small Stitches - with love
Happy Monday, everyone! Wow, I am absolutely excited about my news today: I have written an e-book! I've been working on it for the past month and half and now it is finally done so I can share this news with you. The book is called "Small Stitches Booklette" and it is an introduction to embroidery stitches. You can get the book here.
You know I love embroidery (you DO know that, right?!) and I hope that this little book will help others to discover the joy of stitching. Embroidery isn't just cross stitch, it can be anything you can possibly imagine. I think maybe that is what I love the very most: that it is so versatile; there's a type of embroidery to suit everyone!
I've made a page for the book where you can read more about the details, like what stitches you can learn from the book and sneak peeks at a couple of pages and some of the patterns and images. The book includes 9 patterns for you to have fun with. Atleast I hope they will be fun!
Yes, that leaf there is filled with like a gazillion French knots, which is a great way to perfect your 'knotting' skillz. This is one of the patterns in the book, along with 2 other leaves. And guess what! Because autumn is right around the corner, you can download a page with those 3 leaves in 2 sizes for your own foliage-related stitching fun. Yay!
I am going to make a 'leftie' version of the book too, it's almost ready, but it may not be completely done until we come back from holiday. However, if you want this version of it, buy it and let me know in a note to seller to hurry up already with that 'south paw' version - that should speed things up! ;-)
I hope people will be inspired by the book and take the patterns to places I can't even imagine. Embroidery is fun! And although it is time consuming, it is also a great pleasure to work on. And the more you work on it, the easier and quicker it will be! :-)
This is one of the patterns in the book and it is also available on its own, because it is goes with some of the other patterns I've done. I reaaaaaally love it! It is called Pompeii Arabesque, because when I had finished stitching it, it really reminded me of some of the frescos we saw in Pompeii. You can find it right here.

Happy mis-match
Remember all those pillowcases I got in the bargain bin in IKEA a little while ago? I've put them to use now! Along with some other bargain corner finds + some thrifted fabric and some that were given to me. There are 2 or 3 that I have bought from a fabric shop.
All these fabrics are completely mis-matched but I think they go very well together anyway. Even the ones that were given to me and that I don't really fancy so much. I guess all fabrics find their use eventually, eh? ;-)
I still need to back it - there won't be a middle layer because I want it to be as light as possible. I am hoping to find some suitable thrifted fabric when we go to Denmark. Charity shops in Denmark are way better than overhere. Only a little over a week until we go overthere - can't wait! :-)

Scattered creative space
My creative space today... again it's a plural. At the dining table doing a bit of sewing with my gocco gal prints. Isn't it funny how it's usually more than one creative space? Surely I am not the only one who is scattered all over the place creatively?
This is the other creative space; at the computer. Working on a vector drawing for an embroidery pattern. Which will be part of the same project as the embroidery in the picure below. Can you guess what I am working on? ;-)
It is almost done, all will be revealed on Monday. So happy and excited about this! :-)

Some stitched stuff
Work in progress. Which has been delayed way longer than I intended. Hopefully it will be finished this week. Or early next week at the latest.
And completely unrelated, I feel so very, very clever because I may have (atleast somewhat) solved our unbearably-hot flat problem. Last week I bought a couple of thermal blankets and this afternoon I hung them between the curtains and the window in the living room. Not 100% sure that it is due to my genious, yet simple, solution, but the living room and kitchen definitely feel cooler tonight. We haven't even got the big fan on, which we normally do! :-)Labels: just stuff, wip

Red harvest
Well, will you look at that! It's the first 'harvest' from my tomato plant. Isn't it just perfect? Such excitement over such a small thing. And the things you learn; like, a tomato plant actually smells like tomatos. It's like magic.
We are so far removed from things that grow and how that happens, because we can just go to the supermarket and buy them. All year round. It's unnatural!
I am thinking next year I want a pepper plant too.Labels: gardening

Colourful gocco girls
Here's what I've been up to today. Gocco printing lots of wee lasses. Fun. And so happy and cheerful all together. To be honest, it was only my plan to print a few for an idea I have. But then I sorta went overboard. Because, you know, it would look cute on orange too. Oh and green and yellow of course. And how about lilac?
Maybe a quilt would be fun, but there aren't enough, really and I also need some for that initial idea. Any suggestions?
Yeah, I don't fold each colour after I'm done with it. They all end up in a big messy pile on the floor. But a happy pile, won't you agree? :-)Labels: gocco

Oh, Expedit
I wouldn't mind getting rid of my huge desk and replacing it with this IKEA Expedit bookcase + desk combo. Only, I'd have the half size bookcase and the whole thing in birch, not walnut as in this picture. Think of all the storage I could have in all those little compartments. Whether they would be tidy little compartments, now that's a different matter! ;-)Labels: just stuff

Spoonflower swatch designs
Do you know about Spoonflower? Those folks with the crazy idea: print your own fabric designs on demand. Isn't that the awesomest idea ever? I've been meaning to try it out for ages, but it seemed like an unnecessary luxury expense so I hadn't. But today (Aug. 20th only) they've got a superb offer that I just couldn't pass up: 2 free swatches! So I stayed up way later than intentioned last night to make a couple of designs.
Well, the flowery one I kinda had already; it's the same I use as my Twitter background. Oh, and because I liked it so much, it is also my computer wallpaper. The other one I just sorta threw together, although I have had a circle type thing in my head for a little while.
I am really excited about seeing my very own design on fabric (OhMyGodCanYouBelieveHowCoolThatIs?), but I am not 100% sure what the finished result is going to be like. I didn't get too technical with the colour set up and stuff. I guess that is a test in itself - to see how well their printer handles an image that hasn't been fiddled around with to match the colourscape exactly.
And I deliberately used lots of colours in the circle design to see how different colours come out. The floral one has more similar-ish tones in the colours, which apparently the Spoonflower printer isn't completely happy rendering exactly. But it's all good. It's an experiment! :-)
If it has a happy ending I may make these available in some form or other...Labels: fabric

Tony's yummy scrummy pale brownies
If you've been reading the blog for a little while you have surely noticed that my dear husband is quite the baker, bread and cakes (oh! the cakes!). Here is a new recipe he came up with for a different kind of brownies. They are sooo yummy. Gooey, but not too much, just the right yummy amount.
Ingredients:
115 grams softened butter
100 grams milk cooking chocolate
170 grams caster sugar
100 grams plain flour
2 large eggs
2 tea spoons vanilla extract
1 tea spoon baking powder
Preheat oven to 180°C.
Grease cake tin and line with grease proof paper. Melt the chocolate.
In a bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time. Add vanilla extract and melted chocolate. Add flour and baking powder (sieve if you want), mix well.
Pour into cake tin and bake for 35-40 minutes. Prod with skewer to check it's baked all the way through. Leave to cool and dust with icing sugar if you feel like it. Cut into squares and enjoy! With a cup of tea, Tony would probably say! ;-)

Herb patterns
I am so happy to finally be able to tell you that my herb embroidery patterns are now available. I really don't know why I have been so slow with these - they have been ready for a little while!
But anyway, here they are! Five of them: sage, oregano, parsley, chervil and basil. Available in the shop, of course. This week only (until Sunday) you can buy one and get one free, just quote "gimme some free herbs" in note to seller and let me know which free herb you want. :-)
I love them to bits. So far I have embroidered them on tea towels and placemats. I could also see them looking really lovely on a table cloth. But that's a bigger project so that's not going to happen right now... ;-)
I have worked them in either white or some variation of green, but I think it would be pretty to use other colours. Maybe red on pink or white on blue. I guess that's one of the best things about embroidery; it's so versatile. Changing the colour of the size of thread makes for so many different expressions.

Black and white cake
We made this cake last weekend for Nephew's after-birthday party on Sunday. It's a lemon drizzle cake, the same we had for our wedding. My part of the actual cake baking was grating and squeezing lemons. But after it had been iced, that's when I got to have some real fun. With icing sugar and BLACK food colour. Awesome. And it really was black.
The picture you see here is at the point when Tony thought that was plenty of decorating. But I still had plenty of icing left and it'd be a shame to waste it! Right?! So I added a bit more to the border. I mean, I had to, right?!
We both really like watching Ace of Cakes and maybe we are secretly wishing we could have that job... ;-)

I am always a work in progress
Working on a self portrait. In theory, that shouldn't be anymore difficult than drawing/painting anything else. You observe light and dark and paint corresponding light and dark on your canvas.
But theory is one thing and reality is another entirely. Because portaits are of people and people have all these little quirks and, oh dear lord, a personality. Making that come out of the light and dark is very difficult indeed. Maybe that's why I don't do portraits in general. ;-)
This is just the very first step. Changes have already happened. The right eye, for example, looks way too big in this picture, but that has been fixed and the eyebrows as well. One thing I am wondering at the moment is whether to add colour or leave it white with burnt umber and yellow ochre (the current colours).
We'll see. That is, after all, the nature of a work in progress.
Hope you're having a happy weekend. :-)Labels: painting

Thank you flowers
Sometimes weird things happen... A little while ago I came across a pretty blog called Blossom Daily. Then, the other day, completely out of the blue, I got an email from Sarah who writes Blossom Daily. Here's the weird thing: I'd not commented or left any other trace of my visit to her blog. So it was just one of those strange coincidences! But a very happy one. And look at this lovely post she's written about my little ol' blog. Thank you, Sarah - it totally made my day. :-)
And, blimey, like that wasn't enough, this morning I received an email from Susie of Flower Press. She's very kindly included me in a post about embroidery that she loves. And boy, is it all lovely! Thank you, Susie!
Do go check out both these ladies. Definitely worth 'wasting' atleast a few minutes of interwebby surfing time. :-)Labels: thank you

Secretive creative space

My creative space today. Once again on the sofa with a bit of embroidery. No, I can't get enough of it. Making a couple of brooches - using the felt I bought recently. Yummy colours, making me happy.
And my space is a little bit secretive, something is hiding under all that green embroidery thread. ;-) Hopefully it will all be revealed sometime next week. Providing I can get my camera (or rather the batteries) to work. At the moment, I'm taking pictures with my phone. There's always something wrong some gadget at any given time...
More spaces from other creative folks right here.
PS - don't forget about the crochet blanket sale: £27 for each, including postage to anywhere in the whole wide world. :-)Labels: creative space

Herb jars

Herb jars from Tesco. I really like the label. The line drawing is ace, but even acer is the large 'O' and 'B'. It's nice when supermarkets make an effort with the look of their wares. Even something as mundane as a jar of herbs. :-)Labels: inspiration, oh so pretty

Blue bag
I love doing custom orders and this bag is the latest one. I had pretty much free reign, which made it even better! ;-)
It is like my own bag I made a little while ago. It is just the perfect size for a book (sketchbook in my case) and some other bits and pieces. The fabric is all from IKEA, both the outside and the lining. The lining is that happy orange birdie print which I used in a bag for my sister.
I like making bags; picking out the colours and such. But what I really like is the construction part: figuring out how to make it (in as few separate pieces as possible, preferably!). What can I say, I like my crafting to also engage the logic (?) part of my brain. ;-)
My dear customer likes her bag, as do I, hooray! :-)Labels: bags

Ready for new adventures with pen and paper
On Friday I took delivery of a new bunch of new sketchbooks from Seawhite. They are the best sketchbooks I have ever used. And they are really, really affordable. I got that lot there, and the ink roller, for 20 quid including postage. They arrived real quick too.
The paper is nice and will even hold watercolour. Unless you flood them completely, then they start to dissolve. But it's not watercolour paper, so that is to be expected. And of course, now I am just rearing to break one of them in. But I am not allowed until I have finished my current one. Them's the rules!Labels: sketchbook, supplies

The cutting edge of crochet
The other day I mentioned my too big crochet blanket work in progress. It was too far along to frog it and start over (mostly because I'm really lazy like that), so what now? Well, June (someone else did too, I think) suggested that I simply cut off one end of it. With scissors. Cut into crochet! I'd never heard of such a mad notion before. But thinking about it: it made total sense!
Because it won't start unravelling like crazy just because you cut it. No, it won't do that until you actually pull at the yarn. So it is a controlled procedure. You need to cut the work a bit longer than the length you want to end up with so you have a proper length of yarn to weave in.
It is a somewhat tedious procedure, though. On a blanket like this, where you work backwards and forwards, half the rows will simply unravel when you pull at the yarn. The other half of the rows you have to unweave the stitches from the cut to the desired length of your crocheted fabric. That's the tedious part, as you can probably imagine!
Once you get the work unravelled to the desired length (or I guess that should be shortness!) simply bind it off and weave in the end. And that's about it. :-)Labels: crochet

Love in pictures
Look at that! It's our wedding album (and our honeymoon album)! It's only been what... 10 months and a bit since we got married. :-) I guess you could say I've done a thorough job at procrastinating on this! But it was a daunting task: some 2,000 pictures from the wedding alone (collected from different people) to weed through and then adjust them for print. And we had over 1,000 pictures from our honeymoon to go through a similar process. I'm getting exhausted just thinking about it!
But then Blurb announced that now you can make your book document and upload it to them as a PDF (which is what I wanted - total control, unlike using their templates) and I realised that I could download a trial version of InDesign, valid for 30 days. That was the kick in the backside I needed, so for a good chunk of July that's what I was busying myself with.
The front cover of the wedding album is my bouquet and our rings on a rock during our 'official photo shoot'. The back cover is one I took in the hotel room the morning after the wedding, again the bouquet, this time with the gifts we gave each other. On the honeymoon cover is a composite image of pictures of the baths of Caracalla. One of our favourite places in Rome. Tony suggested that picture, and I daresay it was a very good suggestion.
It took maaaaany hours of sorting and adjusting and moving things around and stuff. But I am glad I put in the hours. It is our wedding album, after all! And I am really, really pleased with the result. Blurb recommend using images in CMYK but I have no program available that can convert from RGB, so I was a bit unsure how it would turn out. It was fine, can't really tell any difference between what I saw on my monitor and the printed images.
But if you want to print pictures in a book through Blurb, or similar, I recommend taking the time to lighten your images. Not a lot, just enough that they look a little bit too light on your monitor. Because colour will inevitably print darker than it looks on a monitor where it is rendered with light. But there is no light in ink. ;-)
So yes, Blurb more than lived up to my expectations. Both the actual result but also the fairly quick turnaround time - I got the books in less than 2 weeks, I thought I'd have to wait a lot longer than that. Plus the price is reasonable too, as is the shipping, unlike certain other similar services.Labels: wedding

I felt colour
Don't you just love felt? All the lovely colours! I bought these recently, with the excuse that I needed some felt for a phone cosy for Tony. Most of these squares are 4.5", so it wasn't that pricey. Of course, I'm not sure if I can get myself to cut into them. I just want to sit and admire the colours... I got them from Pixie Rose - they've got 72 different colours!

The final 9 reasons your blog is annoying
The final post in the small series I like to call 'why your blog sucks'. Of course, your blog doesn't suck. Someone else's blog, obviously. ;-)
Oh I guess I better spell this out: although I do stand by each of these points, they are also mostly meant to be humorous. I ain't out to get anyone or poke fun of anyone or their blog. All blogs are different and so some things work on one that don't work on another. I do not claim to be the know it all of what a blog should be like - these are simply some of my bloggy pet peeves.
19. Oh yeah, do you think rAnDOm CapItaLIsAtiOn looks cute? Or fun? Or creative? Guess what? It's not. It makes you look like a fool. Sorry, but it does.
20. Please use punctuation. A large chunk of text with no visual pauses where you can "catch your breath" are really annoying to read and you shouldn't just use punctuation because your teacher told you to but also because it was invented for a reason and that reason is that when you use punctuation you don't sound like a blabbering idiot who just goes on and on without any thought for how what you are trying to communicate is coming across to the poor people who are reading it and trying to make heads or tail of what it is you are actually trying to tell them and they are getting completely exhausted by now because there hasn't been a single comma semi-colon or even a humble period to relieve them in their reading. Punctuation = friend.
21. Try to use some grammar. It doesn't have to be perfect, but do try to make an effort. Your readers will appreciate it.
22. Continually misspelling words like, 'your, you're', 'its, it's' or 'there, they're, their' is really annoying. Sure, we all slip up from time to time, but do try and make that extra tiny effort.
23. Reading through your text before hitting the post button can help you catch these little annoying things. You do proof read your writing, right? ;-)
24. Humans are visual creatures, so if you've got a lot of text, please try and break it up with a picture from time to time. You know what they say about a picture being worth a thousand words, right?
25. Although, some pictures should be used in moderation. Yes, your pets and kids are Adorable, but unless I know them personally, my interest fizzles out after about 2 or 3. Share the excess with people who know and love your kids/pets. Or atleast make it relevant to me. Posts that consist solely of pictures of your cat are a complete turn off.
26. Speaking of pictures of your kids. There are creepy characters freely roaming the internets who will look at that cute picture of your kid in a diaper in a less than innocent way. And it is actually quite easy to find someone's address online. Even if you haven't written it on your blog or website. If you own your domain name, this kind of information isn't that hard to come by. So, sure, have pictures of your kids, but don't use their real names (ever) and you really shouldn't show their faces either.
27. I read way more blogs than is actually reasonable so to do that I use a feed reader. And guess what? If your blog doesn't have a feed, or one that only feeds me a tiny paragraph and no pictures, I can't keep up with it properly. And I am just too lazy to come visit your blog everyday to check for updates. ;-)Labels: bloggy

Oh jeez, you know I am so terrible at getting round to visit all of you lovely people who stop by and leave fun and clever comments. So... maybe you want to go visit each other? I mean, you're obviously a lot better at it than I am. ;-)

Wip colour
Say what? Nah, I don't do cross stitch. Not me. Nope. Nuh uh. But I am trying to use up bits of embroidery thread... ;-)
Another wip. I started this several months ago, but then never really got anywhere because I had to take a crochet break because of my thumb being weird. Anyway, I did a couple of rows yesterday and this morning I tried it on the bed. Too big. Like... waaay too big, hanging off the sides of the bed with about a foot to spare on each side.
What the heck do I do now? I am considering frogging it and starting over a bit smaller. But considering that each row takes around 45 minutes..yeah, that's not gonna happen! So I am thinking that maybe I'll just fold the surplus at the side, sew it to the 'back' of the blanket and then keep going like it's a smaller blanket. What do you reckon? What would you do? Any crochet 'rescue' ideas out there?Labels: crochet, embroidery, wip

9 more reasons your blog or site is annoying
Here we go, following on from this post: 9 reasons I leave your blog or site without coming back .
Again, not out to get anyone or poking fingers. Just a wee bit of friendly advice to the world at large. ;-)
10. Don't use a background colour/image that is too overpowering, it makes everything disappear and, guess what, it hurts my eyes! Fluro green is not a good background colour!
11. Please make sure that people can distinguish links from the rest of the text. It may seem oldfashioned, but a simple underline is actually quite nice. It says 'link', very simply. And please don't use underlining for other parts of the text if it's not clear that it isn't a link.
12. Don't use blinking or scrolling or crawling text. Seriously, why would you?
13. Don't use text in different colours, please just stick with one, one that is easy to read. Paragraphs of text in all the colours of the rainbow may look pretty or creative to you, but it just makes it difficult to read.
14. Make sure that the colour of your text is actually readable against your background. Light grey on another light grey may look pretty and stylish, but, by Jove, it is difficult to read! Or red on black; damn near headache inducing!
15. Please don't use centre aligned text for larger amounts of text. People don't read like this normally. Left aligned is your friend. Do use centre aligned under an image, though, it underlines the image
16. Please use post titles so I get a rough idea of what I am about to read.
17. For the love of toast, if your writing looks like a 12 year old's text messages, why bother at all? Please, use punctuation and proper capitalisation!
18. Same goes for ALL BLOODY CAPS, it is like shouting with the written word. I don't like being shouted at, not in person and not when I'm reading. If you use ALL BLOODY CAPS I will automatically assume that you are a rude idiot and who wants to give them the time of day? Not me, that's for sure!Labels: bloggy

A larger doodle
This is the result of doodling while watching a not very good film (Knowing, with Nicholas Cage) last night. At first I only did the black and white drawing, but then Tony suggested that I colour it in. So I did.
I like doodling. It's a nice creative exercise. Except this one didn't seem to flow very well when I was making it. Too much thinking, which is exactly the opposite of what you are supposed to do.
But I guess it turned out ok in the end. It's just a doodle after all. ;-) And because it is a sheet of A3 paper, I can use the camera to zoom in on different areas and see it in a different way. Maybe that was the purpose of this doodle then: to look at things in a different way. Who knows... :-)
Hope you've had a nice weekend!Labels: doodling

Fabric makes me happy
Greeeeeeeen!! I finally bought some of this 'Barnslig' fabric from IKEA. I've been wanting it for ages but just not been able to justify it until now. Not that I have any reason to buy it, really. I have no project in mind for it. I just like it so much. It is green for Pete's sake! And the design is really cute too.
And then, oh deary me, oh my! In the bargain corner I got 8 (!!) pretty pillow cases = fabric. I couldn't believe my luck! Usually, there's maybe one or two decent ones. I absolutely love that bottom pink and orange one.
And I love that middle one here. Shame there wasn't a quilt cover as well, like there was for the green one. Although it's not big enough for our quilt, but I need it for another project anyway.
I am thinking it would be fun to use some of these to make a quilt or something. Maybe with some of the other pillow cases I've bought in IKEA. We shall see...Labels: fabric

9 reasons I leave your blog or site without coming back
I've been meaning to post this for ages, but I just keep forgetting. And it's not exactly anything to do with crafting. However, it does have a lot to do with blogging and this is a blog and stuff, so I guess there's the link.
You may not agree with me on what I say below, and may be thinking "who does she think she is?" Well, I think I am someone with atleast a bit of common sense, that's who. Plus, I've been blogging for 6 years, visited more blogs and sites on any kind of subject than you can shake a stick at. Oh yeah, and my education is also in this very area, so I think I know just a wee tiny bit of what I'm talking about. ;-)
Please don't take this as personal criticism, I am not out to get anyone. I do hope that maybe it will be of help to you. Anyway, here we go. Oh yeah, this is the first in a series of 3 posts on this topic. Ye be warned.
1. Music that starts when the page loads and is either impossible to turn off or it's impossible to find the controls to turn off.
2. If your website resizes my browser window, I'm not even going to bother with you.
3. Does visiting your actual content requite opening another browser window? Honestly, I am usually working with an image program, vector program, a couple of folders, my browser and maybe even a music player - I don't need another window open, so I'm closing yours and not coming back.
4. Please don't have internal links on your site open in another window or browser tab. It is illogical, not neccessary and annoying.
5. If you've got lots of pop ups or pop unders, guess what? Bye bye.
6. Got a snazzy Flash intro that lasts half an hour? Good for you, but I really don't care. If you absolutely insist on having this, make sure it is clear how I can skip it. But really, just scrap it altogether
7. Oh yeah, in a similar vein, if your whole site is designed in Flash, I really can't be bothered with it. It slows down my browser. And it's like shooting yourself in the leg with a very pretty gun, because sites like Google can't search is properly. But then, maybe you are not interested in being searchable. I can't link directly to cool stuff on your site either so I can't spread the good word about you.
8. Using a multitude of banners and graphics on your site? Just don't - it hurts my eyes and I need them to view blogs that don't make my eyes feel like I've been staring into the sun for hours on end.
9. Don't make me scroll for half an hour to get to the actual content. Make sure there is something interesting 'above the fold' or I might miss it altogether.Labels: bloggy
