Untitled Friday post

Thanks for the comments about the squares. :-) And I'll get that pattern typed up very soon, Lina. Maybe even next week!

Here's a couple of questions for ya:
What associations do you have when hearing the word Denmark?
What is your favourite flower?

I've gone and signed up for another swap. And I can just hear Tony groaning "not another one!". Oh yes. But it's swap with a bit of a difference. It's the scrap swap 2007. Which means I'll be getting rid of some of my fabric scraps - making things tidier! Of course, I will be getting some in return, but I plan on not letting them just sit in a carrier bag! ;-)

And now I think I'll go plop down on the sofa and read the new issue of Embroidery magazine which came in the mail today. Hooray for great mags!

Mormor's (granny's) rose square

The first day we were in Denmark, my mum gave me this crocheted thing. It is a pot-holder made by my mormor (maternal grandma). And since she died 20 years ago it's probably quite a bit older than that! It was quite nice to get this, because I wasn't really aware that my mormor did crafty things, due to her somewhat untimely departure from this world. Unlike my farmor whom I've seen do just about any needle craft you can imagine. So, I set out to copy this square!

Fortunately, I'd brought a crochet hook, so I got to work with some tapestry yarn my mum had lying around. The square looks quite pretty in monochrome as well, I think! Especially the rose and leaves bit.

As I worked on the first copy, I wrote it down, so I think I might type up a pattern for it. One day, eh..? I'm thinking it would be pretty to do an afghan with these squares, although I'm not sure if the middle is sturdy enough...

Here's a couple more squares. By the way, does anyone know if this square has a name?

On a completely unrelated note, right now Tony is having a go at the Rosetta Stone Danish programme. That makes me very happy, because he's doing it without me bugging him to do so. I would love to teach him Danish on a daily basis, but I know better. I have long since realised that he does not share my love for languages, nor my fascination with grammar. So for me to try and teach him would be rather futile. Instead I'll just sit here and be happy, listening to him repeating "en dreng og en hund", "pigerne løber" "en dreng under en flyvemaskine". ;-)

Kamikaze Zakka Apron

Nevermind the model, it was the best I could get with such short notice. ;-) And sorry about the picture quality, but what can you do when you only have west facing windows, eh?

I don't know where the idea came from exactly, but I lay in bed one evening, unable to sleep, and the idea for this apron popped into my head. I call it the kamikaze apron because the simple idea turned out to be quite difficult to turn into reality!

The amount of seems I've had to rip; it's not even funny! But I persisted and I'm quite happy with the result. However, the tutorial I had planned on making for it... well, it will have to wait, because I'm not even sure myself how I managed to put it together in the end!

I am going to do a tutorial, though, so I can make another apron, without all the flaws of this one. Ha! However, as I understand it, flaws can be zakka, so I guess it's mission complete. This apron seemed simple enough, but it wasn't. I kinda like that. Difficult seems simple and simple seems difficult...

Anyway, the thing about this apron is that you're supposed to tie it at the front, so there are openings to pull the tie through. Why this is a good idea, I don't know. But that's ok. One half of the apron is a teatowel for drying your hands. It can be un-buttoned in the middle so it's twice the size. The other side of the apron is a large pocket made from linen.

The teatowel buttoned with a juniper button.

Top of the pocket. You may just be able to see the green leaves stitched at the edge.

Pumpkin seeds in my bread

Chopped pumpkin seeds and herbs de Provence look pretty on top of the contents of a bag of ciabatta bread mix. Mixed with lukewarm water you can make these yummy rolls.

I *heart* yarn

Happy cotton colours! These are not for a single project but for several smaller ones. Although it is incredibly tempting to use them for an afghan or something... Must.resist.temptation.

50% cotton, 50% bamboo. The softest, smoothest yarn you can imagine! Bought on sale, and I really regret not picking up more skeins, because when I came back the next day, all the pink ones were gone!

Fabrics I got in Denmark

I'm just so in love with that green fabric. I might actually get my mum to buy me some more so I can (gulp!) try my hand at making a skirt!!

I like dots and stripes and green. Orange isn't bad either!

A couple of thrifty finds (all I found this time, bummer), a cushion cover and some really cute strawberry fabric. Just looking at it makes me all happy!

Better view of the cushion cover.

Some fabric remnants from my mum. That fruit one is so pretty!

My sweetie in print!

Well... sort of! See, he posts on the SFX magazine online forums and posters could ask questions for an interview with Freema Agyeman (Martha from Doctor Who) and Tony's question was picked! :-)

Also on those forums, they have a weekly picture challenge and they had some pictures from that in the magazine this month. And one of them is of my friend Steven! How cool is that!

Hey Kate, this one's for you

As some might know, I subscribe to a mind boggling amount of blogs in Bloglines, so the fact that a few minutes ago I didn't have a single unread post is quite astonishing. And will undoubtedly change very soon! It has taken quite a bit of effort to whittle down this huge amount of inspiration and information. I started before we went to Denmark and got the 8000+ (!!!!!) unreads down to about 1500 (I think). Of course, that went up again while we were away, but in the last couple of days I've had another go at it!

So from now on I'm going to try and keep it more manageable, maybe even get rid of some of the feeds (gasp!). And I'm certainly going to try to not keep everything new. That is a really bad habit. "Oh that looks interesting, I'll read it properly when I have time". Yeah, right. I usually don't come back and read it. In fact, I usually forget all about it.

It is some kind of digital pack rat-ism. I'm not sure exactly what is supposed to happen if I don't save every interesting little morsel. I think I sometimes justify it with "but it's for inspiration!" (try saying that with a Luke "but I was going into Tosche Station.." Skywalker kind of voice and I think you know what I mean!), but that's pretty stupid, because I shouldn't take inspiration from others, I should come up with it myself. Of course, there's nothing wrong with getting inspired by others, it's just the excessive-ness of all these links and posts and such...

Sometimes I keep a post new because it has a pretty picture, and that is really the silliest reason at all. Especially considering that I have a "Borrowed pictures" folder on my computer with several sub-folders for different kinds of pictures: colour inspiration, interiors, projects, flowers and research material for things I'm working on. That's where those pretty pictures should go, if anywhere.

So, next I'll be trying to* get rid of a good portion of those posts I've kept new so far. I mean, almost 10,000 (!), that's kinda embarrassing! Of course, the ultimate goal would be getting those down to zero as well, but that's probably not going to happen!

*Do or do not, there is no try!

Tomatos, apples, flowers

We're back from Denmark. Arrived home laaaate Friday night (or eaaaaarly Saturday morning, depending on how look at it), because there was an hour delay with our return flight. Yikes!

We had a good time. Read some Danish books (me), baked yummy cake (Tony), visited friends and played the Wii, resulting in a sore arm/shoulder (me).

Ate Danish food, mum's home-made bread, drank Danish chocolate milk (me), ate Danish potato chips (Tony, mostly).

Went to the city: Ă…rhus. Bought lots of yarn! magazines! fabric! ribbon! Danish liquorice!

But now we're back and I'm trying to squeeze as much holiday feeling out of today and tomorrow as I can. But it is hard, because I had to work today. And tomorrow as well, despite it being a bank holiday! Tony won't go back to work until Tuesday, so, as far as I'm concerned, I'm pretending like I don't have to either. Yeah, denial is a wonderful magic trick...

The pictures are from my parents' garden.

PlushYou! softies

As promised, here are the three softies I'm sending off to PlushYou! Their 'species' is Quapo. Whatever that means. Well, it does mean something, but it's just kinda boring, so.. whatever.

It has actually been quite challenging to make these, despite having made some before. Because I have made them previously, I decided to use fabric that maybe I wouldn't normally pick as my first choice. The challenge then being to work with it so it turned into my kinda thing after all. And I think they have. But only after ripping out the decoration on a couple of them a few times. I wanted them to be just right. And they are. Last night when I had left them on the sofa they just looked so adorable, proper little characters!

I hope someone will love them just as much as I do and buy them. But even if no one buys them, they will still be loved (I think..!), because I've asked Sally, if they don't sell, if she could donate them to a children's' hospital or something like that.

This is Lilli Patches and she's made from some preloved fabric I bought when we were in Denmark in April. I almost didn't buy it, but I'm so glad I did, 'cause it's just perfect and sooooo cute with those bears in boats!

Next up is Amelie Florens. She is made from a tea towel! I love the muted colours of the stripes, so pretty.

Here is Tertia Fantine, made from a bandanna. I'm never going to use that sort of thing for a softie again! Because the fabric is so thin, it makes it really difficult to stuff evenly, so she does have a bit of a belly!

Please let me know what you think of them as I am a wee bit nervous about sending them off like this; maybe no one else will like 'em!

He's watching Austin powers 2

This is a bit of an all-over-the-place post. Just because I can, you know..? Stuff I want to get off my chest for no particular reason other than them popping into my head with regular intervals. Sad, I know.

That picture makes me think about how much I love colours. But colours that are clear blocks of colour. I rarely get all excited about batik type colours or combinations. Clear colour blocks, no muddling together, that stuff just looks grey to me. And I don't like grey much.

I think I've finally decided that Moleskines are not for me (except possibly for the watercolour variety). There are good things about the regular Moleskine, and the sketchbook one, but not enough to justify the hype. The paper just isn't to my liking. The regular one's is too thin and my favourite pen bleeds through. The sketchbook one doesn't take watercolour well, and there's just something weird about how the paper feels.

So I'm sticking with my cheap-o sketchbook from WH Smith. Which, although it's not perfect (it is a sketchbook after all), is perfect for what I use it for. It takes watercolour fairly well and it is chunky. Which I REALLY like. And I like making my own cover for it, which adds pretty much any feature to my sketchbook that I could want...

The more things I make, the more I realise that working from someone else's pattern is not for me. Or rather, I don't like craft books that are very particular about the outcome. Sure, I'm still learning (don't get cocky, kid!), but I guess it's just some kind of stubbornness "don't tell what to make, dammit!" 'Cause where is the fun in not making things up yourself?

I like the type of craft book that puts ideas in my head and bees in my bonnet. The kind that makes me want to drop it and run to pull out fabrics and yarn and work on my own thing. I want to get inspired by energy and inspiration rather than a particular thing or project.

I've been a bit of a busy bunny today. People who know me well won't be surprised to know that I haven't finished my PlushYou softies yet - although I'm almost there! So I've been working on those today and I'm just so in love with them.

I almost can't bear the thought of parting with them. I want to keep them! The last one will be done tomorrow and then I can have some fun taking pictures of them. Of course, they will have to travel to Denmark with us as the post office isn't open here on Sundays. So those are going to be some proper globe-trotting softies!

Also, there are a couple of things to go along with the softies that I need to make. Plus a couple of birthday presents and other little bits and bobs.

Blimey, I can barely wait until we go to Denmark. I almost can't believe it's almost here! we just have to get through tomorrow and then get up really, really early on Monday 3:30 am! Yikes! But it's WORTH IT, because I get to see my parents and my friends and shops I like and places that I miss. Of course, there's also my mum's cooking. I'm sure I can convince her to make a few favourite dishes while we're there! ;-)

And now we're off to bed, so we can get up REAL early tomorrow so we'll be well and truly tired and able to fall asleep at 8 pm tomorrow evening!

Pictures of the PlushYou softies tomorrow!

Tillykke!

Today is Tony's birthday! And what else could I do for his birthday card than stamp on some daleks?! Cause he is Doctor Who obsessed (of course, when he reads this, he'll look at me and say "I'm not obsessed!" Nice try, honey, but you are!) and would happily watch it at all hours of the day. Except of course when he's not watching Star Trek or Star Gate or some such. ;-)

Happy birthday, my sweet Tony. x x x x

Bird kick

I've been on a bit of a stamp carving kick lately. All birds - and a leaf. For a wee project I'm working on so I can't really get into the details at the moment... ;-)

Now I've got enough birds for the project and I'm experimenting with the colours. I can't make my mind up if I'm going to use different colours for each bird or just one colour. And I'm not sure that I'm completely happy with the colours I have, so I may have to wait to finish it until I get another colour. I think red would be nice with the orange and pink. The background will be yellow so I can't use that.

And here's a tip for ya: if you want to carve your own stamps from erasers (or anything else, I guess), using a lino carver is WAY better than a knife. Oi... I've had my mum's lino carver set (from the 70's!) in a drawer for ages, but didn't start using it 'till the other day - how silly is that?!

Right-o, off I go to work now. I just have to work today and tomorrow and then I'm off for 8 whole days. Yay!

Look what I got!!!

Yikes - look how pretty the paper is, and the card; so cute! It came in the mail today. When Tony came home and told me that there was a package for me from my friend Mette in Denmark (Hej Mette!), my first thought was "oh no! I managed to send her birthday present while she was on holiday and now it's been returned to me!"

But it wasn't, thank the Force. No, she's sent me some lovely pretties as a thank you! Just look at that matryoshka doll face on the box she decoupaged for me - I love Russian nesting dolls, and she knew that. And ribbon/fibres in such pretty colours I can barely stand it.

Oh and that fabric... I must have a good think and come up with a project that's worthy of such beauty.

There was a lovely letter as well, which is one of the best things to receive in this age of email..!
And in that letter she told me she reads this here blog, which is pretty neat, 'cause I didn't think anyone from "back home" did that.

Tak, søde Mette! :-)

It most definitely shouldn't look like this

Can you tell what it's supposed to be?

I wonder what I did wrong? And how could I do anything wrong, when there are only 3 ingredients!?

Mosaic Monday, August 13

I used the tag 'jylland', which is the Danish name for the peninsula where I grew up. English-speaking folks may know it as Jutland. It is the largest part of Denmark, the bit that is connected to Germany. In less than a week we will be there! To say that I'm excited and can barely wait, is a gross under-exaggeration!

Roses + rosy

Tony gave me a lovely bunch of roses on Saturday. Completely out of the blue. That's the best kind! And that picture so doesn't do them justice. The colour is amazing.

And speaking of roses, take a look at those rosy cheeks! Such a pretty cover on the Autumn 2007 catalogue from Gudrun Sjödén. The whole thing is such eye candy - and the clothes aren't bad either. It's just a shame that it's way out of my price range...

Day at the beach

Don't you just love deck chairs?! We went to the beach today! At Southend. It was an absolutely lovely, perfect day. Sun and not a cloud in the sky. We got there early, which was good, because around noon, the beach was pretty packed and parking would have been an absolute nightmare!

We brought our lunch, blanket, sunscreen and books etc to keep us entertained. When we weren't just looking at the other people. Some people just have no idea how they appear to other people. Yes, I'm talking to you, beer-gut-hanging-out-butt-crack-showing-guy. Yikes, whenever he bent over to pick up something...

The chavs were out in full force, complete with tarty girls with more gold jewellery than you can shake a stick at, masculine-looking women in 'Burberry' caps, drunk uncle trying to bribe nephew to behave. But the nephew just screamed. And honestly, did "I thought you was my best mate, but if you don't do like I say, I guess you're not" ever work on a three-year-old?!

Then there was the lone guy who had a bottle of vodka which he slowly mixed into an even smaller bottle of Sprite, occasionally leaving his towel to take a swim. Very strange.

We got sand in our shoes, had lemon ice cream, got a little sunburnt, which proves that, yes, places that aren't covered well in sunscreen will get burnt in the midday sun. All in all, a nice day out, almost like being on holiday!

Ha! As I was typing all this, Tony asked me: are you writing about Southend? (me: uh-huh) about butt-man? (yup). Then he laughed. ;-)

So, London...

This is the National Gallery. We didn't go there. We went to the National Portrait Gallery, which is just around the corner.

I was a bit early, so I sat on a bench in Trafalgar Square. Some people were rehearsing an Indian dance or something.

It was nice, sitting in the sun, listening to the music.

And doing a drawing of one of the sculptures in the fountain.

That's the sculpture. No idea who it is, but it's some kind of man with fishtail. Merman?

After eating our lunch in Trafalgar Square, we walked to Covent Garden. I like the architecture. And the stalls with different arty and crafty things. Some more interesting than others.

Like these fun t-shirts. How cute is that hamster?!!

An interesting walkway by the ballet (I think...).

Cute vintage dresses outside a shop with a cool sign!

Pretty green glass detail on a green door. I like green, remember?

I left a crochet tag (croffiti!) in the toilets at Liberty! I think if anyone, they would appreciate it, eh? I mean, people there knit or crochet while they are working!

R for red, r for rest

Red detail
Originally uploaded by wardi.
Tomorrow I'm going to London to meet my friend who lives in Windsor. She is Danish too, and we've known each other for 14 years (FOURTEEN!? bloody hell...). Although we don't see each other very often, it is still nice to know that there's someone else here in England whom I've known for many years. One of my bestest friends in the whole world, and certainly the one who's the most like me in many respects...

So, yes, off to London tomorrow. Last time we were there together was in May last year! The picture is from that outing. The details above that red door are absolutely delicious!

A good thing about going to London with Sara in stead of Tony is that it is less noisy; after about ten minutes of me stopping to take pictures for every 20 steps, Tony won't stop moaning and groaning! ;-b

Right, I'm off to do some relaxing in front of the telly while I whip up a couple of crochet tags for unsuspecting street signs and such in London!

Sewing machine mat - a tutorial

Today I made a mat for my sewing machine. When I push the machine across the table, it leaves black marks, you see, and that's not so good. The mat is really easy to make, but I'm going to tell you how anyway. I added a pincushion, just because that seemed practical. Especially because it is stuck down with velcro, so it stays put. Staying put is an excellent quality in a pincushion of you ask me.

What you will need: fabric (yeah, I know, you didn't see that one coming, eh?!), velcro (whichever kind works best for you, I only have the sew-on kind), stuffing.

If you have any problems with this wee tutorial, don't hesitate to email me; I'll be happy to help!

Measure the length and width of your sewing machine, then add an extra 5 cm (2 inches) to the measurement of the width and 10 cm (4 inches) to that of the length. Cut out two pieces of your chosen fabric(s). Or you can make a patchwork like I did for the top because I couldn't decide on what fabric to go with!

Sew your two pieces of fabric together with right sides facing each other. Remember to leave a gap so you can turn the thing! Before turning, snip the corners as close to the seam as possible (but without cutting it!), so you get nice sharp corners. Now turn inside out and stitch the opening together.

You can skip this, but it definitely looks nicer if you iron the mat now, so the edges are flat. Then sew on (or iron, or whatever your kind calls for) a piece of one half of the velcro, about 5 cm (2 inches) from the edge.

Now cut out two circles, or a square or whatever you like, for the pincushion. Sew the other half of the velcro to one of the circles, then sew them together with right sides facing each other. Again, leaving a gap so you can turn it inside out.

Before turning it, though, make triangular snips all the way round the seam, but don't cut into the seam. This will make the pincushion go nice and round. I think doing this has a proper name, but I can't remember what it is, so I just call it triangular snipping.

However, if you're making a square or rectangular shape, you have to snip the corners like you did with the mat before...

Ok, done snipping? Then turn that baby inside out and stuff it to your heart's content. Then sew it together and you're pretty much done!

You might want to do a few seams across the mat, just so the two pieces don't slide about, but you don't have to do this.

Now sit back and admire your work!

Apparently, I rock!

That was a nice surprise today, on the very inspiring Susie's blog, to see that she thinks I'm a Rockin' Girl Blogger! Thank you, and right back at ya! :-)

Like her, I can't really believe that virtual strangers read this little blog... I doubt that many people I know in the flesh read it (if there are some, please say hi!), they aren't that much into all this crafty stuff. At least not enough to read me waffling on and on about it! So, yes...

Now I have to nominate five rockin' girl bloggers, although ONLY five?! There are so many!

Anyway! Here are five, randomly picked:

Theresa of Taste the Dew. Ok, I have to be honest, this one isn't random. Because Theresa is my friend and a lovely, wise person. And although we have never met, it kinda feels like we have; in any case we have exchanged physical mail, not just emails!

Rita Zepf of Textil Kunst. When reading blogs, it's just as much about the pictures as it is about the words (especially when it comes to craft blogs, eh?), so even if you don't understand a word of German, you can still get inspiration from this blog. So many cool finds of the textile/thread variety.

Mandy of Feltbug. She's fascinated with forms in the human body, like I am, but unlike me, she does something about it. It's so inspiring!

Helle of Gooseflesh. Helle makes the loveliest crocheted pieces inspired by coral and other things from the sea. She is also a fellow Dane, although she's lived in Australia so long I think she's probably more Australian than Danish(?)!

Christine of petal soft makes pretty embroideries and other things with interesting textures. Very different from the things I make, which makes it so great to look at!

I love the diversity of all the blogs I read. There are so many interesting things and topics in the world and I like how the blogs introduce me to so many different ideas and perspectives. It can get a little overwhelming at times, though, and then I just have to not read any blogs for a day or two. To clear my head and maybe actually get some crafting done, in stead of just gazing in awe at everyone else's gorgeous projects!

Hello library!

Tony is special. He talks back to the automated messages from the library. Frankly, it's a bit disturbing. But he does it in Danish and that makes it alright. In fact, it makes me rather happy, because it means he knows enough Danish to be able to do that!

One thing I am wondering, though, is whether he only does it for my benefit, to show off. Or maybe he does it when he's alone as well..? ;-)

Second anniversary

Two years ago to this very day I moved to England! It's kinda strange to think about. In a way it seems I only just moved here, but it also feels like I've been here forever. So many things have happened in those two years, it seems impossible that it hasn't been longer!

When I moved here, Tony came over to Denmark with an empty suitcase and so I moved here with the content of two suitcases and one carry-on luggage. Of course, back then, I hadn't discovered this wonderful world of crafting, so there were less essentials! Although I did take the innards of my computer which we then reassembled in a new case!

Since then, I've hauled quite a few of my belongings - too many for Tony's liking I sometimes think. But that's probably mostly because I'm not exactly a tidy person. But I think I've mentioned that before! And he definitely knew that before I moved here! ;-)

It's been quite the learning curve, living in a different country. There are similarities between Denmark and England, but there are even more differences. For example, I have a pretty firm grasp of the English language, but that doesn't mean I understand everything. In fact, I feel like the more I know, the more clueless I sometimes feel!

I don't always understand the English humour, I don't always know what things are called and some things seem incredibly slow, stupid or just plain old-fashioned. At times I have felt like I was most decidedly going crazy; that I'd never fit in here - I still feel like that sometimes, although a lot less frequently!

Of course it's not always so easy for Tony to understand this, which I totally understand; he's not the one who's moved away from everything he knows as well as the back of his hand. And that's okay, as long as he puts up with the occasional tantrum and tears!

Which he does. Because he's such a great guy. And hugs and kisses go a long way to keep me sane. But if that doesn't help, there's always his muffins and brownies to fall back on, right!? And I'm still here, so he must be doing something right. Cause I wouldn't be here if it weren't for Tony. And as long as he isn't ready to move to Denmark (we have got to work on those communication skills!*), I'm here to stay.

*That's a quote, from a film. With Bruce Willis. And the Diva Plava Laguna.

Brownies and elephants

Tony made brownies the other day. Like his muffins, they are yummy. I mean like, REALLY yummy! We may have wildly different tastes when it comes to food, but in the baking department they are similar and he does baking very well!

And here are a couple of things I'm working on for PlushYou... aren't those elephants just the cutest?! The deadline is mid-September, but to make sure that they get there in time, I've set my own deadline: must be finished before we go to Denmark. Which is in 19 days. Do you think I'm excited?! ;-)
