Inspired by Fabergé

Embroidered eggs
Originally uploaded by wardi.
A little bit of embroidery from the last couple of days. It's just so relaxing to sit and watch telly while stitching away. And boy did I need it, I'm so glad my working six days in a row stretch is now over!

For some reason I've been looking at pictures of Fabergé eggs lately. I'm not sure if I've been looking at them because I kind of had the idea for these embroidered eggs, or if the eggs came about from looking at the Fabergé ones...

It doesn't really matter, I guess.

They are like little gems to me. I like how they are all different, and how they were an opportunity to do some different stitches. Although it was my attention to follow the Take A Stitch Tuesday challenge every week, that just hasn't happened.

I especially like the pink egg, the colours are so lovely together, and the pattern is really simple. To my surprise I also like the yellow egg. And this is surprising because I rarely use yellow for anything; I don't know why, but yellow just doesn't appeal to me at all. Neither does grey, too boring for my taste. Black is the colour I'm most vary of, probably from too many paintings gone bad from an excessive use of it!

I think I'm going to make some more of the eggs and then put them in a bowl as a little decoration for Easter.

Looking forward to good things

This book, and two Japanese craft books are on their way to me - Yay! Or rather, they will be shipped on April 18, so I have to be veeeeery patient for a wee while still. With a bit of luck they'll get here just before my birthday, other wise they'll be waiting for me when we get back from Denmark. Good job I had the foresight to have them sent to T's parents' address...

I haven't got a link or an ISBN # handy this very moment, so that'll have to wait. :-)

I love the anticipation of new books, but this is almost too much, too long! Atleast I'll have my mum's visit to distract me; next week!

Just a little rainbow-y thing

Not much crafting (or anything else, for that matter) has been going on here lately. I've been at work every day since Sunday and I'm working today and tomorrow as well!

Tuesday and Wednesday I worked at a different store and when I left yesterday, the asked me if I'd like to come back another time if they needed someone. I said yes, although I don't really want to come back - especially not if I'll be stocking shelves again. 'Cause that's sooooo boring and makes my feet ache! But I couldn't make myself say no, cause they'd been really nice and it sounded like they were impressed at how fast I worked! I don't think I did, but I guess the people they usually have doing it, must be REALLY slow then!

Anyway. So not much crafting, except for a couple of those crocheted bracelets, which I'm quite addicted to making already. Or maybe it's just the crochet?!

But this morning I've been doodling on the computer, making this little rainbow thing... If I like it enough, I might have some postcards printed. I feel like it's time to get some new postcards done!

More crochet

Crochet cuffs
Originally uploaded by wardi.
I've started making some crocheted cuffs / bracelets. They are quick and easy to make and I find it strangely comforting wearing one of these. They are quite warm because they are made from 100% wool.

I've made three of them so far, but I forgot to take a picture of the third one, and I haven't got it anymore. D'oh!

My mum is coming over for Easter. I can't wait! We're going to London (to go shopping!) and other stuff. But what we're probably most excited about is that my mum will finally see all the crafty things I've done in the past year or so.

'Cause my parents have only visited us once, in December 2005 and I didn't really start doing anything crafty until the beginning of 2006. So there's a LOT of stuff for her to have a look at!

My dad isn't coming, unfortunately, he has to work! But we'll see him later in April when we go to Denmark for my birthday. Which is in one month exactly!

Happy mail goodness

From Helle of gooseflesh
Originally uploaded by wardi.
The last few days have been really good for mail. First I got a letter from my friend Sara, and the same day I got a sweet little package from Helle of gooseflesh who I sent a bunch of orange carrier bags to a wee while ago. Oh, and, is it just me who gets excited about how different 'air mail' stickers look around the world?? Just look at that Australian one, love that!

Then there was the redwork swap from Maitreya. We were both a bit late sending stuff to each other, but I can definitely say it was worth the wait! Not only is the (redwork) embroidered bookmark so, so lovely, but she also sent me some really pretty fabrics. Not to mention a copy of Marie Claire Idées, which I've been trying to figure out how to get my fingers on lately - it's like she read my mind! This is what I sent to her.

Tree silhouettes

Silver trees zipper pouch
Originally uploaded by wardi.
The silhouette pictures I made last week inspired me to do these pouches. I'm very happy with how they turned out, but if I make them another time, I think I need to do it differently. Because cutting a single stencil with all those fiddley branches was a nightmare! Single trees is probably the best option!

They're both in the shop (here and here), along with a couple of cuffs.

Getting there, ever so slowly

I've been working on drawings of stuff found in our kitchen cupboards since the end of September. That's almost six months! I can't believe it's been taking me this long to get 18 drawings done. Above are the most recent ones.

But the thing is, we tend buy the same stuff all the time. And the things I draw must be taller than they are wide. I'm picky about the colours too, and I think that might be the main reason why I've been taking so long. Quite a lot of the things we have in the kitchen cupboards are heavy on the red and green, so I guess I've been waiting for some variety..!

Anyway, I'm just over half way done, there'll be 30 drawings once I'm done - I'm doing them in a small Moleskine cahier. After this I think I'm going to do make-up, shampoo etc. Below are the drawings I've done so far, bigger versions can be seen in the Flickr set: Kitchen cupboard cohabitants.

Ain't no square, granny!

Granny triangles
Originally uploaded by wardi.
I have no "designated" yarn for crocheting yet, so I had to use a bit of the tapestry wool my mum sent me last year. I've not had a real use for it until now, so it's kinda lucky I had it. But using tapestry wool to crochet isn't very economical. I like the feel of it, though. Wool is so nice and warm.

These are some of my favourite colours, and as I was making the triangles, the colours made me think of ice cream. There's the mint flavour, pistacchio, strawberry/raspberry, melon...

I don't know what to do with these triangles! What do you make from 6 crocheted triangles?? Maybe if I get my hands on some more tapestry wool, I'll make myself a scarf or something... Or maybe I'll just take them out from time to time to look at the colours...

Oh and, check out the fabric under the triangles, it's our new ironing board cover - I totally love it, it's so pretty! It almost makes ironing T's shirts a pleasure (orrr not). And only £2.50 from... that place where I work.. ;-)

Bean salad

Bean salad
Originally uploaded by wardi.
I love making this bean salad. It's quick and easy, and very tasty.

Chop an onion, 1 clove of garlic, 2 tomatoes, 2 peppers. Mix with one (drained!) can of mixed beans; add a bit of olive oil, a bit of lime (or lemon) juice; paprika, salt & pepper, a pinch of chilli powder and a bit of ground coriander. Mix together and leave to rest for a couple of hours. Eat as is with nice bread, in pita bread or heated with e.g. rice.

You can use other spices, I sometimes use a bit of Mexican spice mix. If I use that, I like to heat the bean salad and eat it between two slices of bread. A bit messy, but still very yummy!

Book love

We went to the library on Saturday to see if they had some good stuff in their book sale. And, boy did they ever! Just look at that pile! All for under £4.

Some fiction for the both of us, a gardening book for me (hope is eternal, right, cause I'm not much of a plant person!) and will you look at that Star Wars book! And I hadn't even noticed that, T pointed it out to me.

One book I got was A Room with a View, which I've never read before, but I've watched the film a few times. I actually only got the book because the pages have gone yellow and I had this idea that I could use it for some kind of creative purpose...

But anyway, this is a lovely book, and it makes me long to go to Italy (like it takes much to crave that!), although not so much to Florence, because I'm more in love with the Eternal City of Rome.

It is a strange book in a way; the language is very old fashioned, I guess. Sometimes I barely know what they mean, it seems that some words may even have shifted meaning since the book was written. It is an interesting view of the Baedeker wielding English and the snobbery of certain classes towards anyone who acts outside the norm.

In the Treasury

Weee! My brooches were in the Etsy Treasury today. Not sure if any of my stuff has been there before - and of course I only knew about it because cilene78, who picked it, sent me an Etsy conversation to let me know!

I'm not sure if having your stuff in the Treasury makes any difference, except that it makes ya feel noticed in some little way. And that is really nice!

Maybe we should all notice each other more?! Give compliments more, and not be afraid to receive them either!

Boy George, I think she's got it!

My first crochet...
Originally uploaded by wardi.
For about six months, on and off (mostly off!), I've been trying to learn to crochet. My mum and my sister have both kind of shown me, and I've got two books to help me, but it has all been in vain.

Until Thursday evening. I don't know what happened exactly, but I suddenly found myself (with the help of my two books, but nonetheless) able to do granny squares! They may not be the most exquisite specimens, but there they are.

Maybe my previous failures have been because I was just doing rows of single crochet and they always ended up wonky. Maybe it was because the wonky rows never seemed to have any purpose and so any effort was quickly abandoned.

Not that the present granny squares have any particular purpose, but at least they seem like a finished product in themselves. Of sorts.

Now I just need to pile together a stash of yarn so I can make... something. An afghan, perhaps! The blanket I'm currently knitting (I've been working on it for months and months!), seems to be a never ending project. Maybe I should simply unravel all those knitted squares and do some crochet instead...

Happy Spring

Anyone else in a happy spring kind of mood? Since Saturday, the weather has been absolutely lovely here. Sunny and quite warm; you almost forget that it's only March. And where did February go?? It seems like it was January the other day!

The pictures above are two pictures I've done for my friend Sara. She lives in a wee, and rather drab, room and she was talking about getting something for her walls. So I'm surprising her with these two. I hope she likes them! I think I may have to make some for us as well, 'cause I really like them!

I cut out the tree silhouettes from black paper, glued them onto some heavy paper and then embroidered the words. I attached them to a piece of card with those corners you use for photos, and I'm going to send Sara some extra of those, so she can change the 'background' if she wants.

I really like the look (and feel!) of the embroidery on paper, but it does take a bit longer than embroidery on fabric, and there's no room for error! Kinda scary! ;-)

Happy Spring

Windsor

Michal Negrin shop in Windsor
Originally uploaded by wardi.
On Saturday we went to see my friend Sara in Windsor. It was a beautiful day and it was so good to see her again. Unfortunately, she had to work, so we didn't get to spend nearly enough time together.

We saw the castle and had a bit of a wander while waiting for Sara to get off work. And I saw this beautiful shop called Michal Negrin, which sells (pretty, pretty!) jewelry and clothes - heck all the displays are for sale.

Michal Negrin shop in Windsor

I took some pictures in the shop, but they aren't terribly good, because I wasn't sure that they would let me take pictures there, so I had to do in on the sneaky. They are in this Flickr set (along with pictures from Windsor Castle).

Here are some tips for you if you ever go to Windsor.

If the Castle is the only reason you're going, don't bother. It's £14.50 per person (!), but you don't really get to see that much. So unless you're a complete castle-nut, you'll probably be a bit disappointed (we were, and we didn't even have to pay!).

If going by car, don't park anywhere else but the multi-story car park at the shopping centre. We paid £4 for 5 hours; in the other car parks it looked like a similar period would cost almost twice that. Leave extra time to find parking if you go on a Saturday.

Have lunch/dinner at the King and Castle in Thames Street - I can recommend their chilli con carne!

Snow over London

London pincushion
Originally uploaded by wardi.
Nah, not really snow, but a wee snow globe like pincushion. Ever since I made the Winter Wonderland one, I knew I had to do more. You know, the touristy kind of snow globe. What city should I do next?

It is very satisfying to stitch the snow, and I love how it feels to run my fingers over them. Cutting out the skyline silhouette was a bit tricky, and I'm not sure it is that obvious that it's London, unless you know of course. The silhouette goes all the way around the globe, so you really have to click on over to the Flickr set to see the rest of the 'sides'...

* * *

And here are the bunnies I've been hinting at. They'll go in the shop in the next couple of days. They are Easter egg cozies, but really, they are just as perfect for just standing around looking cute/pretty. There'll be three sets of four, with one of each colour.

My little house

I've already started on another house. They are so fun to make, and just think of the variations I can make... oh how fun would it be to make a balcony!? I want a whole little village!

And for some strange reason I've been humming 'Your Song' by Elton John all day...

One happy bunny

And speaking of bunnies... coming soon!

My (Danish) friend Sara lives in Windsor, where she works at a certain castle, and on Saturday we're going to visit her! I'm so so happy about that! We don't see each other near enough, which totally blows. She's very dear to me, and I really appreciate the friendship we have. Supportive and honest, inspiring and smart, that's my friend!

Can't wait to see her! And we're going to see the castle as well, which neither T or I have ever seen. Maybe we will take tea with the Queen..?

The pictures above are of a couple of things I'm working on at the moment. Actually, the pile in the second picture are all finished, I just haven't had the time (and light) to take a proper picture of them...

The top picture is something completely new, and I just feel like looking at it all the time, although it's not even close to being finished, 'cause it's just so darn pretty! And it's inspired by birdhouses. I have no idea why I keep gravitating towars birdhouses at the moment. Maybe it's a spring thing?

What a lovely couple!

I felt it was my duty to share this picture of my parents with the world. Aren't they lovely? They went to a 50th birthday/fancy dress party this weekend and this is what they looked like. My mum is no particular lady with a sloppy attitude to her hair and my dad's costume is inspired by a character from a series of Danish films about the "Olsen Gang" - Danish readers may be able to tell which one?? The short trousers should be a dead give-away!

In other news, last night I was working on some Easter-y cuteness to go in my Etsy shop soon. I can't tell you how good it feels to get some crafting done again - the past week there hasn't been much of that going on here, as you know. So, if you like bunnies, stay tuned!

Anyway, today we picked up a few supplies and after lunch he got on with it. And they are rather yummy. And he made them all by himself; my only contributions were chopping the chocolate and sprinkling a wee bit on top.

My guy can bake - I'm so lucky!

You know softies are hip...

When even the fashion designers start making them! Or, rather, designing them. I can't exactly imagine Christian Lacroix sitting in his sofa watching a film while stitching up a softie. Or maybe I just have a lack of imagination..?

It's cool that things like softies have become so popular, and maybe the fact that designers like these are designing them, will open people's eyes to the awesomeness of softies and the like.

However, I must say, I don't think these are particularly interesting examples of softie making, there are lots of lesser known crafters/designers out there who make softies whivh are a lot better.

Link to Happiness

No work for me today, or yesterday, cause I'm still an ill li'l bunny, so no acts of crafting have been taking place. But I'm starting to feel better (fingers crossed, knock on wood etc!)

I stumbled upon a website/blog, can't remember where, but I think it's worth a read. Here you go: The Happiness Project.
