Lagrange points

Howdy land of blog

Ok, do me a favour; Look out the window, now look up, sse all those points of light in the night sky?? If it's night time, and not cloudy you will ;)

Up there in space, there is a phenomena between any two celestial bodies large enough to have a gravitational pull, there are points of equality where the gravity from both pulls at an object and holds it in place between them, kind of like a calm spot in the chaos, they are called Lagrangian points,I find this kind of special, like there are hundreds of points of calmness out there, tiny points of mutual attraction. They occur between any two large enough objects, and each pair has five Lagrange points between them, so there are many of them spread out through the solar system and beyond.

I know it's only a feature of gravity between two large astronomical bodies but the romantic in me has always just kinda liked the idea...points of mutual attraction...

Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle

People who are about to Blog i salute you...

I watched Lewis last night, well actually tonight, i taped it 'cos i was busy.
It's a spin off from the highly popular ITV detective show Inspector Morse. Featuring Kevin Whatley who played Morse's sidekick Lewis. There was a nice moment where Lewis almost got hit by a car that was identical to the car Morse used to drive... spooky!
About time Lewis got his own show...

It had a great joke about Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle.
A lecturer says to his class "A plaque on a wall in Germany says Heisenberg may have stayed here..."
And when Lewis says "Ah, the Uncertainty Principle" the lecturer says "Possibly..."
See... See...?
Anyhow... it made me laugh...

Plus: Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle!! What a title!!!

(Apparently the transporters on Star Trek have a gizmo inside that is called a Heisenberg compensator, it's to compensate for the uncertainty involved in matter transfer...)

Notes from the Universe

A while back I signed up to receive a daily email from something called "Notes from the Universe".

Little messages meant to lift your spirits and such. Sometimes the messages seem quite silly, but at other times... They are just what I need to hear. Funny that.

Today the message was:
Some people bloom late. Some very late. And some, very, very late.
But, Carina, they all bloom. And the longer it takes, the more spectacular it is.
Quite the deal, huh?
The Universe

Thoughts become things... choose the good ones!

Really, really suck.

We are now able to get online. However, the only things we can access are the e7even website and T's webdomain because that's hosted on their servers.

I really cannot believe how crappy these people are. How bad their service apparently is and so on and so forth!!

This has been going on for almost a month now. Surely, it can't be THAT hard to fix??

Last week, on Tuesday evening I think, T had read somewhere that if you changed back to the old username (or whatever it is called), then it would work. And it did. Till Sunday afternoon.

Since then, nothing.

What does it take to get them to fix it?? And why don't they update their Network Status more often?? Don't they know that people who have to wait, are more likely to be angry with the people who make them wait, if they get no information or information that is COMPLETELY USELESS?? The Network Status was last updated on the 20th and that update is of NO HELP TO US at all!

Update: 20th Jan 2006 03:49.
Some changes have been made to the routers connecting BBUK realm customers to the core network and customers are advised that powering off their modem/router for 5 minutes and then powering back on may improve the quality of the broadband connection.

What good does that do when you have NO CONNECTION??

After we had had this problem the first week, T requested a socalled MAC code so we can transfer to another provider, but we are STILL WAITING for that code!! Why is it so hard to send this code to people??

How can we get them to get their asses in gear and BLOODY DO SOMETHING??

It's a shame that their office is in Maidstone, or I'd suggest that people get together and go and protest in front of their building!!

Living with the English (part seven)

Commensality. Fancy word, huh?? Means fellowship at table; the act or practice of eating at the same table. {source}

I've been thinking about why eating with T's family seems different than eating with, say, my parents. It should be the same, right?? Eating is more or less the same function for everyone.

But then again, it's not.

What I've been missing when having dinner with T's family is exactly commensality; although I didn't know there was a word for it. I learnt that from reading Watching the English by Kate Fox.

In Denmark, when you sit down to have dinner, you also sit down to spend time with your co-diners. So, once you have eaten your food, you don't necessarily hurry to get up and get the table cleared of any trace of a meal having taken place.

Yes, it almost seems like eating is something of a chore and not one you take pleasure in here in England. Specifically sharing a meal with someone.

In Denmark, I am starting to realise, sharing a meal with someone has a very key ingredient called hygge (not exclusive to eating, although food is not unlikely to be present in hygge), defined as spending quality time with family and friends, in a relaxed atmosphere {source}.

It's not uncommon for Danes to remain seated at the table, just talking about this and that, long after the actual meal is over.

In England it's almost like there's something sordid about having a conversation at a table, especially one that still shows the tell-tale signs of a meal. Conversations must take place while seated in sofas or chairs, but not at the table.

And Lord have mercy on you if you don't use coasters and place mats!! What's up with that?? I don't think I know anyone in Denmark who uses either unless it's to add a splash of colour to a table. Not as a practical measure...

Dex made a comment about thinking the title for SFX was SEX, which is funny because those wacky people that run the magazine sometimes cover the bottom of the F on the cover, usually with some scantily clad SciFi babe, the general consensus is they do this on purpose, the SFX forum even has a chat thread about it...

Here, for Dex is my embarrasing SFX purchase moment, actually i think the shop assistant was more embarrased than me in the end...

It was way back in October of 2002, issue 122, i toddled off to get the latest issue from the local ASDA, I found the issue and took it up to the till, handed it over and the woman at the till did the bar code thing and it didn't register, so she typed it in by hand and it still didn't work, so she typed in the name of the magazine, only becasue Darth bloody Vader's head was obscuring the bottom of the "F" she typed in SEX Magazine, obviously nothing came up on her till so she said to me "Sorry love, i can't find a price for SEX magazine." When i explained her mistake she did a very good impression of a beetroot and couldn't stop appologizing for thinking i was some sort of pervert.

I mean, why would some sex magazine have Darth Vader flanked by Stormtroopers on the cover, that is gunna be some pretty weird kinky sex magazine " Take me Darth, take me!!"...

ASDA is great, SF(E)X is greater

Painter's ass

Not mine, I assure you. But I have been wondering about this word. Well, here's the explanation:

“A painter's ass” is not a phrase that immediately brings to mind an accessory to the artist's profession. But easel comes to us from the Dutch word ezel, meaning “ass, donkey.” The Dutch word was eventually extended to mean “an upright frame for displaying or supporting something,” in the same way that the English word horse has come to mean “a piece of gymnastic equipment with an upholstered body.” Developments such as these illustrate the playfulness or wit sometimes introduced into language when speakers use perceived similarities between two objects to name one of them. {source}

Hello folkeses,

Today, whilst shopping, i found myself behind an older gent in the checkout queue.
The young lady behind the till told him how much his purchases totalled and the gent said "Cheap at half the price!"

Now i've heard this phrase many times before and always thought it sounded wrong, i mean: "Cheap at half the price!" Well... obviously!!

Why do people say it? It's a bloody stupid phrase! Surely "Cheap at twice the price" makes more sense... thus implying that even double the cost would still seem cheap, as opposed to saying that if it was half the price it would be cheaper, which is really advertising to the world you've spent money on a crash course in the bleeding obvious!

Oh well, as the old phrase says:" Too many eggs in one basket saves time" or some such waffle.

Quickie

To all our customers,
First and foremost we would like to
unreservedly apologise for the ongoing broadband network problems that some of
our customers are experiencing.
As you know we have been working on moving
customers to the new networks and this has been a much more challenging task
then we had hoped, however, we are making progress and hope to have all the
reshuffling finished during the course of next week.
Obviously Customer
Services and Technical support are much busier than usual responding to emails
and phone calls to get customers back online and we appreciate that it is very
frustrating not being able to get a quick response, but again we are working on
this and drafting in extra resources to try and ease the situation.
Once all
the network changes and upgrades are complete we will be making a formal offer
of compensation to all users affected and simply ask that you be patient a
little longer so that we may concentrate on resolving the problems at hand.
Finally, it has not helped that customers on the BBUK realm have been
further affected by a router interface problem which we have engineers working
on today and we hope to have a resolution to this shortly.
This is an
information note only and we will not enter into communication about it's
contents we feel at this stage, as we are sure you agree, that our resources are
better spent resolving the network issues.

In other words: they don't know what's happened, they don't know how to fix or when it will be fixed. Sheez.

Yeah, just wanted to let you know, though my lovely assistant has already done so; I don't know when I'll be back, cause our ISP don't know when they will have the problem fixed.

This has been going on for a week now...why can't they bloody fix it?? It's getting annoying. especially the fact that we just DON'T KNOW ANYTHING. if they could atleast give us some sort of time frame, right??

So, until such a time when I do return, leave lots of comments for the assistant.

Howdy Bloglanders.

So here we are post Christmas, the New Year well and truly started, the dust has all settled.

Do you reflect on your Christmas, was it all you hoped it would be, did you get the prezzies you wanted, see the people who mean the most to you?

The real turn up for the books was bumping into someone on Christmas eve, Sarah, a girl who i care about very much and who i haven't seen in nearly two years, i spent a few days with her over the festive period and we had a great time together.

Now that we have both gone back to our respective lives i find myself thinking about her a heck of a lot, odd the way someone can just show up out of the blue and turn everything upside down, funny how before Christmas i didn't expect to hear from or see this girl, and now here i am a few weeks after Christmas and it turns out she was the high point of Christmas for me, i find myself thinking about her, and i know she thinks about me...

Strange how a chance meeting can stay in the head long after it has passed and have so many knock on effects, how things long buried can come back to the surface so easily...

Service announcement

If you come here because Steven has given you a link to this place, I may have a message for you.

That is, if you're awaiting an email from him; his computer has gone and crashed in a big time way, so you must have patience with him. Expected time of recovery: Tuesday next week.

That is all.

I can't stand bananas. Where I got the idea for a banana falvoured lager, i have no idea. I'd rather not know!

I wouldn't be surprised if it existed...

The drawing is done in Illustrator, from an initial pencil sketch. Texture and "effects" are added in Photoshop.

Previous illustrations are this way.

To whom it may concern

"Every year I want to accomplish things that will make me a better person, and every year I struggle and fail."
You know who you are. ;-)

This bit just struck a chord with me. Isn't it odd that we're always trying to do things to be better people??

Does it make you a better person to be tidy (I think T would love me to have that as a resolution...), or lose weight or eat more healthily (my resolution, ha!) or read the paper every day??

I don't think so.

Being a good person has nothing to do with the things you do, but more perhaps why you do them. If you do them to live up to your own or other people's expectations, then I don't believe it makes you a better person. Cause you're not really doing it for you, are you??

For example, I am a pretty messy person, and I seem to thrive with a certain amount of chaos. T is the exact opposite, so I try to be more tidy, so it doesn't annoy him. But I don't think I'm a better person because of it.

I know, doing something to be nice to other people, make them happy, will make you look better in their eyes (and your own?). But does it make you a better person??

I'm not questioning your 'motives' or your sincerity in the things you want to do, to be a better person. It's more of a philosophical wondering about what makes you a better person. And it might just be that you will be a better person for it.

Being good has an infinite number of definitions, doesn't it??

Excursion with dinosaurs

NHM - Entrance hall
Originally uploaded by wardi.
Yesterday I went to London to draw the dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum.

Unfortunately the dinosaur gallery is not very drawing friendly. The light is appaling, there's nowhere to sit down and look at the dinos.

And worst of all, most of them are suspended in the air, so it is hard to get close to them. Except for the narrow platform that leads you through the beginning of the exhibition. But there you are constantly faced with people going by, being in the way and/or bumping into you.

So, I only have some dino heads and this drawing of the BIG Diplodocus at the entrance hall.

But I drew some other things instead; a whale, a mammut and some of the architectural details. The building the NHM is located in is just fantastic!!

After eating my lunch outside (a bit freezing!), I went next door to the Victoria and Albert Museum. It is full to brim with all kinds of art and design, past and present. I drew some dresses and some stuff in the Japanese section.

I had a very good day, but very tiring. Who'd've thunk art could be so exhausting?? ;-)

Some of my drawings from yesterday are in my Flickr Drawing set. Go have a look!

Howdy.

Regular visitor should have heard of the night of the lime... (how odd, i wrote the original Lime entry on my Birthday, i never realised that...)

Anyhow, i'm here to tell you the lime lives on... (even though he's still undead!!)

I didn't throw him away, i didn't even bury him in the garden and hope for a tree, i dropped him in a box and he appears to have just stayed there...
He wants you all to know he's fine and the missing eye dosen't bother him much. Although he would rather like a pair of sunglasses so rude people can't stare at his embarrasing lack of one eyeness.
(Hmm, i seem to be spelling embarrased in many new and interesting different ways lately)

Catalogue request

I don't know why I even remembered that from Jan. 1 it would be possible to request the Harrods Catalogue.

Even less do I remember why I want it. Certainly I won't have the money to buy ANYTHING from there! I suppose I'm hoping to see a nicely put together catalogue with pretty typography and stuff like that.

And I don't know why I'm even telling you this. It's almost as random as the fork post, isn't it??

Working title: 2006

It's a new year. 365 brand new days. Like a book, all the pages are blank and now we set about to fill them in. What will you fill your pages with??

I want to be more healthy: not skip the gym too much; eat healthy, more vegs and fruits, less junk.

But I also want to do more art. I want to draw every day, and do watercolours and paintings as well. It's about bloody time.

I hope that when I write 'The End' in this book, I can look back over 365 pages that have been meaningful to me and to others. That is my resolution.

Funny that

T is watching Batman Begins and I just can't watch/listen to Liam Neeson without picturing him as Qui-gon. Especially because in this film his character is a teacher/master to Christian Bale's character.

Although it seems like he's more on the dark side than on the light side. If you know what I mean.
