Marigold Sugar Skull pattern
Hola! It's a new pattern! I bet you can tell where the inspiration for this one has come from. Mexico and Dia de Los Muertos. It is called Marigold Sugar Skull. Hope you like it. :-)
Actually, to be honest, a lot of my embroidery is inspired by folklore type embroidery. Stylised natural elements with lots of colour. This one has a bit more 'natural' or maybe pictoral elements. The skull and the large flowers.
Years ago I went to an exhibition of Frida Kahló's paintings and they made a big impression on me. An interesting thing about them is that most are quite small. But I guess that's only natural, since she made a lot of them in bed. At that exhibition they had also made a Dia de Los Muertos shrine which was very beautiful. Lots of candles and flowers. Yellow and orange flowers. Marigolds. So there is the inspiration for the flowers. And it is such a lovely, happy colour. :-)
I think it is interesting how Mexicans (and other South American countries too?) celebrate the dead. But in a non creepy way. Celebrating the life and love of friends and family. That is beautiful. I think other countries/cultures could learn from that...
