And now for something less amusing
I sometimes wonder if I'm crazy somehow..? - you can answer that question after reading this, I guess.
Today I was sitting in the lunch room at work and a few of the 'kids' were in there as well. And they were talking shit about one of the others. Really making fun of her in a very mean way. I suspect she is not everyone's favourite person (she's not a horrible person in any way) and, I admit, she can be a bit annoying, because she just doesn't always take note of what people are saying to her.
But.
That does not in any way justify talking about her the way they do! And it's not the only time, I've heard them do this. I've also heard a couple of them talking about how they would make her think that someone fancied her. Yet another time I heard someone being rude directly to her.
That's just not on. One thing is to not like someone, but being rude and laughing at someone you work with... that's just wrong! It's just generally wrong, in my opinion. It's the worst form of gossip. I hate gossip, in all forms, but this is just... I can't even describe how despicable I find it.
My profound dislike for gossiping (whether it be 'good' or bad gossip) probably makes me seem kinda of odd to people I work with, but I really don't care. I was telling Tony about this and his response was kinda disappointing, 'that's just work, that's what people do'. Maybe I did a poor job of explaining how mean these kids are... He was kind of indifferent to my indignation on this matter!
Anyway. It got me so pissed off that I actually went to the member of management who was at work today and told her that they were talking rubbish about this colleague. And I think she went and told them off, because a bit later I passed the lunch room and the door was closed.
Maybe I mettled in things that are not my business, but I felt like it should be my business. It's no different than bullying in schools and won't most adults (and kids!) agree that that is wrong? To be honest, I don't even give a flying fig if these jerks know that I 'told' on them. I really don't care if they get mad at me. They are despicable little rats. Maybe I should have just told them off myself, but hopefully letting management do it will have a greater impact.
So. Am I crazy? Is it crazy to think that you should treat people like you would like to be treated? That you shouldn't talk about people behind their back - and certainly not talk shit about them! That you shouldn't be mean to others. That although you can't get yourself to treat everyone like a friend, atleast you should treat them with a modicum of respect.
If that is crazy, please strap me in a straitjacket and lock me away!Labels: thinking
