Yellow is pretty

Can you? Phew. Our flat is so hot, it's almost too much to stand. But there is one good thing to the heat; they let us go home early from work. So the heat is good for something.

I'm playing with Inkscape, trying to get to know it better. I'm still dreaming of having Illustrator, but for now that is just a dream, so I have to work with what I've got. Right?
But something weird happens when I save an Inkscape .SVG as a plain .SVG file. See? The bits around the speech bubble completely disappear and what on earth is going on with the text? I had to cheat by taking a screen shot of the picture and then pasting that into the Gimp.

Any Inkscape/Gimp geniuses out there who can shed some light on why this happens?
