All consuming

Next week the store where I work will be open between 9am and 11pm. I can understand that you'd want to do your shopping early in the morning. Get it out of the way and then you can do other stuff.

But on earth you'd want to do ANY shopping at 11pm is simply beyond me. It's not natural! You should be in bed by then. Or watching telly, kissing your honey or something. Not shopping!

I'm just a bit bummed out by all the mindless consumption I see every day. Buy, buy, buy! Checking lists, dragging sacks of stuff to your car.

People complain that they don't have time to spend with their family and friends - no wonder, you're all out shopping! It makes me sick. I mean, yeah, I buy (some of) my Christmas presents too, but I feel like I do so in a mindful manner. It's not just stuff, stuff, stuff.

Sometimes I just feel like telling people to put down their Barbies and their DVDs and their Little Ponies and go home and spend some time with the people they care about. What are they doing shopping at 9pm, 10pm, 11pm??

And if you must shop, for Christmas, for presents, one would assume that you're doing so to make someone happy. But most people seem to think of it as a chore. Maybe it is. But that's all in your expectations. Yes, there are long queues, what do you expect?! You're not the only one shopping.

Smile at others, it'll make it easier.

But why not just stay at home. That'll make it even easier. Make your own presents. Teach your kids (and yourself?) to make cookies. Write a proper letter to someone, don't just fill in the names of the recipient and the sender on a Christmas card.

I don't know if this is a rant of some sort. Frustration. Tiredness. Don't know.

I refuse to let my job consume my enjoyment of Christmas.
