To the One I Love

Honey, I'm home!

Copenhagen was freezing cold and we were absolutely exhausted when we came back from there. Cause all of Thursday we spent walking around to see a few outdoors sights: The Little Mermaid, Kastellet (an old fortress which is now a park), Queen's castle, changing of the guards at the castle (where I got told off by policemen making sure people didn't get in the way of the guards. Ooops!).

But the reason for going to Copenhagen in the first place was of course the R.E.M. concert on Wednesday. And OH MY GOD! It was GREAT! The reviews of it in the newspapers have been lukewarm, but WHAT THE FUCK DO THEY KNOW ANYWAY??? I was happy! First, the Thrills played for 40 minutes, and that was cool, don't know them too well, but well enough to sing along on 3 or 4 songs.

The REM concert itself was excellent, there's only one song missing, to make it perfect, namely Nightswimming. I do hope I get to hear that performed live some day. Other than that, the set was a mix of hits, stuff from the new album, rarieties and a song (I'm gonna DJ) that should've been on Around the Sun, but didn't make it in the end. As Michael Stipe said "I think you'll see why it didn't make it" - it would have sounded out of place.

Stipe donned his usual face paint and sported a cool suit. I mention this only so I can tell you that he, as usual, took off his clothes during the concert. Well, only the tie and jacket... But he did show off his stomach a few times! I find this funny!

I wasn't really in a position to see what Peter Buck and Mike Mills were up to, people kept getting in the way, and when you're my height that's not uncommon to happen! Buck did join The Thrills for one song and they joined REM for one of the encores, I forget which one, though...

The concert was great, but at times the heat and the smoke got quite obnoxious (why people were allowed to smoke there in the first place, is beyond me!!), and T started feeling ill, so I told him to go back to the hotel, I wouldn't mind staying on on my own. When the concert ended, however, I began to regret that. Cause, despite the hotel only being 5 minutes from the concert place, I managed to get lost on the way there! And at 11pm, when you're tired and cold and have no money or phone on you, being lost in the big city isn't a situation you want to be in!

This concert didn't blow me away like the one in 2003 did (maybe because I wasn't completely soaked from standing in the rain, and there wasn't the thrill of "the first time"...), but it was still really, really great and I had an excellent time. My only regret is that I didn't get a tour t-shirt, and they even had pink ones! :-o
